Re: when pagination is wrong

Gail asked:

If we noticed it, we would do: 300 $a133, [3] p., but p. [134] if in
a 504. The problem with [136], as someone else has pointed out, is
that it makes it appear that no pages were numbered.

Re: Determining origin of folktales

We faced a similar problem in our children's room (of a medium-sized public
library). Our home-grown solution was to choose 5-7 of the most common
fairy-tales (based on the number of items within our
collection)--Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, etc--and then we classed all the
variations under the first word of the fairy-tale. All the Cinderella tales,
for example, went under "398.2 CINDERELLA". (This very nicely solved the
problem of classifying "Dinorella," a dinosaur Cinderella tale.)

Faber, Roland, authority record(s)

The two Roland Fabers in the NAF are probably the same. Both the theologian
and the musician.

For Gene Fieg: How are you searching the NAF? The only record I see is n 96040227 for Faber, Roland, 1960-
which identifies him as both theologian and composer, updated in 2003. I've sent you an e-mail copy.

looking for someone who has digitized printed music (or books)

Hi,

I'm looking for ideas from someone who has worked on digitizing a collectin of printed music.  (Books
would probably work too.)

The process, issues that came up, why you picked one thing over another, what's ideal vs. practical
reality, etc.  Those types of things.

I'm most interested in the metadata side and how these items were included in your catalog.

Thanks,
RM

My understanding from a recent presentation at NW ACRL is that all the libraries contributing to PINES work
directly in pines, but the cataloging is not done separately, but instead by the individual libraries.
There was a mention made of the fact that there was a PINES cataloging coordinator/trainer who kept things
on track was responsible for quality control and system development.

Based on the link Gene provided there's a reasonable chance that
name/title authority
	n 97109524
Faber, Roland. Ob es mir denn entgangen
needs updating. But I haven't done any further investigation myself.

Deadline Extended: ER&L '09 Conference T-shirt Design Contest

Tired of conference t-shirt designs you have no say in? Think you could
do better? Help us design the ER&L 2009 conference t-shirt!

This year, YOU have a chance to submit a design for potential ER&L
attendees to vote on.

All entries must:

1. Be submitted by 5 pm EST on Friday, Nov. 7, 2008.

2. Be one- or two-color designs.

3. Include "ER&L 2009" somewhere in the design.

4. Be in .ai, .svg, or .jpg format.

Please note:

Fine details don't always translate well into screen printing.

Simpler designs are usually better.

T-shirts are being sponsored by EBSCO and will include the EBSCO logo in

Voting will take place online the week of Nov. 3-7, 2008.

The winner will be decided by a vote on the ER&L blog.

Maximum of two entries per person.

OCLC New Policy down after one day?

Hi all,

I remember seeing the new OCLC policy
(http://www.oclc.org/worldcat/catalog/policy/policy.htm ) yesterday, but now
it's down today. Anyone know what specifically happened to cause them to
take it down so fast? Riots at OCLC? ;c)

Thanks and happy Monday Morning,

call for proposal - new email address

Apologies for the reposting. Please note the updated address for submissions.

NRMIG ALA Annual 09 Program
Workflow Tools for Automating Metadata Creation and Maintenance
Call for proposals, Draft 10/13/08

ALCTS NRMIG (Networked Resources and Metadata Interest Group) invites your proposal to participate in a
program on workflow tools for digital libraries, to take place at the ALA Annual Conference in Chicago,
July 9-15, 2009.

With the increasing volume of digital content that libraries are creating and maintaining, long-term
data curation is emerging as a key consideration for the profession. In order to support data
preservation and re-use on a local level, as well as facilitate resource sharing, library professionals
need practical tools to help them efficiently manage large volumes of data over time. What types of tools
and techniques do you utilize to automate the creation and maintenance of metadata?

Presentations should focus on current practices and new technologies, and include concrete
demonstrations and/or examples of automated workflow tools and techniques employed at a local level or
in collaborative endeavors. Specific implementations may cover a wide range of topics, including but
not limited to:
-Digital preservation of assets and collections
-Data production, or validation of metadata, to comply with a particular schema or protocol
-Data migration / interoperability across systems or applications
-Interoperability, data harvesting, e.g., for resource sharing
-Data production in distributed environments
-Open source or proprietary software tools
-Tips or techniques for working with particular standards and protocols

The program forum will be a panel, in which each participant has from 20-30 minutes to present, followed by a
Q & A period at the end of the program. To submit a proposal for presentation, please email a brief
