From what I've heard, some public libraries maintain databases of
community resources, using the MARC Community Information format. I
hope someone from such a library will speak up.

I suspect much of the "market" for that format has been captured by
database programs. The complexities of MARC were fundamentally designed
for documents and their attributes.

Hi Justin--
Take a look at the Urbana (IL) Free Library's catalog. Click on
the Community tab.

I don't work there, so I can't give you any background on it.

Our Library is in the process of building one. There are some good
Community Information databases available. You might be interested in looking at the ones
built by San Francisco Public Library and Santa Cruz Public Library.

Call-number

Dear autocats:

How we are supposed to differentiate call-numbers on copies of the same
title? I know there should not be any identical call-number. Say, we have
got 4 copies of "Sacrament of faith" (same edition). The call number we
assign is: BX320.2 .T35 1996

Is it that first copy shoud have just BX320.2 .T35 1996, second one
:BX320.2 .T35 1996 c.2 , third one: BX320.2 .T35 1996 c.3, and fourth one:
BX320.2 .T35 1996 c.4 ?

Thanks again for your valuable answers,

Yuliya Halushka

Several points.

First, many libraries have decided that different barcode numbers on
the items are sufficient to differentiate volumes and/or copies at
the same call number.

Second, many libraries (including ours) continue to mark such
copies/volumes with copy and/or volume numbers, as you suggest. In
our case, we mark "c.1" if we have the item in hand when the next is
processed, but we don't go out and fetch it for relabelling. That's a
practical decision to save work.

Third, some libraries take the view that having the same call number
on the books does no harm -- or not enough harm to justify the labour
of checking each time to see that a call number really is unique.
Checking and adding a title letter, or something of that sort, to a
call number does take time. I don't know of any studies to justify or

Labor day holiday in the United States is today

Hi All,

most of our particpants in Autocat are in the US, but for those of you who are not I thought I should point out
that today is the Labor Day holiday here in the US.

http://www.usa.gov/citizens/holidays.shtml
Labor Day is the first Monday of September. This holiday honors the nation's working people, typically
with parades. For most Americans it marks the end of the summer vacation season and the start of the school year.

That is what we do for all of our customers, if when copy one is
added, it is not yet known that there will be later copies. If two or
more copies are added initially, our label printing program prints the
appropriate number of labels, with "c,1" on the first copy. It's not
worth the difference to relabel to add "c.1" later.

Most customers omit the period before Cutters. (Our labeling program
uses "/" to indicate a line break.)

Some libraries are no longer using copy numbers, depending on bar
codes for distinguish the copy. We find patrons like knowing multiple
copies are available.

For most clients, the copy numbers apply to the whole system (as
opposed to one location), so that copies may be transferred from
location to location. This may not apply to a copy with a prefix,
e.g., "Ref.", since the number is already distinct.

Re: Community information format

Christchurch City Libraries has had a community information database in
MARC format since December 1994. Since we changed our ILS in 2004 there
is only keyword searching, and is not as good as it was previously.

Re: Help: Series Cataloguing

I can't figure out Mac's second option at all (is there a
typo--should one be "those with a nondistinctive title"?)

Here's how we do it, but it depends on a capability of our ils (Innopac):

Items for volumes without distinctive titles are simply added to the
serial record, as usual.

Volumes with distinctive title get the usual full record treatment,
just as for a series that is fully analyzed. Distinctive title in the
245, series title in the 4XX/8XX. The full call number (with volume
number) goes in the item record, and the item record is linked to
both the analytic record and the serial record, so that it displays
to the public whether the public is viewing the serial record or the
analytic record. This linking is a feature of Innopac, so I don't
know what users of other ils do.

Help:Cataloguing Landolt-Bornstein Series

Dear all,

I request your collective wisdom to catalogue the famous "Landolt-Bornstein"
series. There are so many c=variations I am getting in cataloguing thisd
series.

I remember some of our fellow professional asked same type of question. But
just now I searched the archive and no results are found.

So may I request you, to guide me, as to what would be the best way of
approach to catalogue this series.

Thanks in advance for your kind advice.

with regards,
Siladitya Jana
