(GRE Success! ) File - Monthly Reminder

Hello,

This is to remind you that you are still a member of GRESUCCESS, a group that aspires to help people, and dispel rumors regarding GRE, TOEFL, TSE, and other standardized tests, as well as, the entire application process in general. The group is also attempting to broaden its arms with quaint research on general aspects and observations of studying abroad. Please feel free to mail your concerns to the group by emailing to gre-success-hHKSG33TihhbjbujkaE4pw@public.gmane.org

1. If you have any private queries, or if you are shy of asking a question in front of hundreds of people, let me re - assure you that you are entering a group of cultured people who will not laugh, disapprove or hold you in disdain. If still, you are apprehensive, please mail your queries to me at yamanoor-/E1597aS9LQAvxtiuMwx3w@public.gmane.org

2. Kindly try to make maximum use of the group by accessing and contributing to the links, database, files, photos and calendar sections of the group. Please be discreet. I shall remove any offensive material. Kindly add to any of the relevant tables in the database. Please upload files that you think will be useful for the members in the group. Kindly check for, and abstain from adding too large, or virus loaded files. Please upload any photographs of yours that you would wish to share with us (This shall be subject to scrutiny though..flimsy bikinis and flashy pets are fine...but I still insist on cross checking! :)). Also, please upload any important deadlines that you think might benefit the group. It is also not a bad idea to put up your birth date, test date etc on the calendar. This is a group full of fun loving people and we would like to share your joy!

3. Unfortunately, our group does not have the rights to use the polls section. I don't know how that came into existence. Kindly bear with me. We shall use free tools available on the internet for the same.

4. Please try to visit my home page http://www.yamanoor.com/gre/ to take advantage of the resources linked, that shall help you in your entire application process.

5. Also kindly note, I strongly discourage any personal messages or communications across the group. I will be moderating without exception, any messages that are either low in utility, or are sensitive, racial, or disapprovable in any manner.

6. It is my earnest request that you tell more friends about the group so that we can help serve a larger group of interested people. Also, if you have web pages, kindly consider using the promotion tools to make the process of subscribing easier for your visitors.

7. Do mail in more suggestions as and when you wish and think it is necessary. Every word is listened to.

8. A final note, as you see, the group's objective is to not only help and provide suggestions, it is also to dispel all sorts of rumors about the process that keep cropping up now and then. So, it is upto you to ask as many questions as you can.

Thanks for being a part of the movement.

Good Luck

Srihari

Hello Abhraneel,

I am terrible sorry about the delayed response. For a PhD admit, you don't always need a publication at hand. It would be nice if your projects are of high quality and are well detailed in a portfolio of some sort. Let me know the status of your projects.

Abhraneel, the University where you do your PhD will determine not just the next few years, but the direction of your career. Do keep both those schools in the list, but keep looking where you would "ideally" like to work on your PhD. Let's discuss "down" from there, if necessary. We have close to a dozen years worth of experience in this now and people usually severely underestimate their own reach.

Madison and Rutgers are both great schools by the way. Madison will be competitive. An MS from anywhere in the US, especially in a solid school like Vanderbilt University will definitely help! That is a good route.

In fact, I have been recommending people do this: BS + Work for a year min. + MS. + work for a year min. or get some solid internship/start up experience = then do PhD. apps. This is really ideal in terms of helping you define long term career goals.

Does this answer some of your questions?

Good Luck,

Srihari

Hello Abhraneel,

With good references, you can set aside some of your worries about the GPA. I am concerned with some of the schools in your list:

Univ of Utah (SPAN LAB)

The school is good, but the state, while beautiful is worse than Bihar in how backwards it is. Given that you will spend a few years living in a given place, this would be a bad choice.

University of Florida

Which one? Gainsville is okay, not great, but the rest are hopeless. Only go if the research is compelling.

Iowa State University - Not recommended.

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute - Fine

University of Iowa - Iowa is not famous for education at all, so I am not sure why you picked 2 schools from here. Iowa is in the same category as Utah as far as backwardness goes.

University of Maryland CP (Speech Processing Grp) - Good

Michigan State University  - Other than Ann Arbor, I wouldn't recommend any Mi. schools.

Good Luck,

Srihari

(GRE Success! ) OT: Sharing a good news

Hello everybody
I am glad to inform all of you that I have joined IIT Madras as Asst.Professor (Applied Mechanics). I have been with the gre-success group since 2002 and have been its moderator/co-owner since 7 or 8 years (don't remember when).

Brief Bio-sketch for those who don't remember me (or don't know me):
I first applied for MS/PhD programs in USA in 2002 (12 out of 12 rejects), then in 2006 for PhD (7 out of 7 rejects) then again for PhD in 2007 (3 fellowships out of 3 applications). After my first set of rejections in 2002, I worked for a while and then wrote GATE and joined MS program in IIT Madras. I then joined Penn State's prestigious finger biomechanics lab in 2007. After graduation, I applied for academic positions in India. After due process (presentation, seminar, interview), IITM has offered me Asst.Prof position which I accepted.

Thanks for being part of this group. I have learnt a lot from all of you over the years. Thanks a lot for that too. I shall, as always, continue to perform administrative duties for the group (moderating/managing posts and memberships). I am very open to giving opinions on preparation etc. I might have to limit my opinions on schools. I shall do so only when there is no conflict. Srihari is aware of these developments and I am doing this after taking him into confidence. As always, continue to be the dynamic group that you are.

Disclaimer: Any opinions stated here now or in future are personal and do not necessarily reflect opinions of my employer. In particular, endorsement from me does not mean an endorsement from IIT Madras.

Excellent stuff! Very motivating! This is the kind of perseverance
that one can use to boost one's confidence in most situations, not
just for GRE / PhD. 12 out of 12 rejects and I would have probably
given up. 7 of 7 rejects on round #2 would have scarred me. It takes
serious courage to see past that much rejection, try a third time and
be motivated enough to do a better job on the third attempt after so
many rejections. Respect.

As have we from you. Thank you very much for sharing your thoughts here!

I am extremely happy for you on your new job. I hope you find the
kind of job satisfaction you seek. We wait to see the day you go from
assistant professor to full professor. "Prof. Varadhan SKM" has a
nice ring to it:-)

Best,
Raghu

I shall, as always, continue to perform administrative duties for the group (moderating/managing posts and memberships). I am very open to giving opinions on preparation etc. I might have to limit my opinions on schools. I shall do so only when there is no conflict. Srihari is aware of these developments and I am doing this after taking him into confidence. As always, continue to be the dynamic group that you are.

Re: (GRE Success! ) OT: Sharing a good news

Somehow I missed Raghu's response, and I really wish there was a place to hit "Like". We are all so proud of you Varadhan.

Sincerely,

Srihari

Best,
Raghu
