(GRE Success! ) File - Monthly Reminder

Hello,

This is to remind you that you are still a member of GRESUCCESS, a group that aspires to help people, and dispel rumors regarding GRE, TOEFL, TSE, and other standardized tests, as well as, the entire application process in general. The group is also attempting to broaden its arms with quaint research on general aspects and observations of studying abroad. Please feel free to mail your concerns to the group by emailing to gre-success-hHKSG33TihhbjbujkaE4pw@public.gmane.org

1. If you have any private queries, or if you are shy of asking a question in front of hundreds of people, let me re - assure you that you are entering a group of cultured people who will not laugh, disapprove or hold you in disdain. If still, you are apprehensive, please mail your queries to me at yamanoor-/E1597aS9LQAvxtiuMwx3w@public.gmane.org

2. Kindly try to make maximum use of the group by accessing and contributing to the links, database, files, photos and calendar sections of the group. Please be discreet. I shall remove any offensive material. Kindly add to any of the relevant tables in the database. Please upload files that you think will be useful for the members in the group. Kindly check for, and abstain from adding too large, or virus loaded files. Please upload any photographs of yours that you would wish to share with us (This shall be subject to scrutiny though..flimsy bikinis and flashy pets are fine...but I still insist on cross checking! :)). Also, please upload any important deadlines that you think might benefit the group. It is also not a bad idea to put up your birth date, test date etc on the calendar. This is a group full of fun loving people and we would like to share your joy!

3. Unfortunately, our group does not have the rights to use the polls section. I don't know how that came into existence. Kindly bear with me. We shall use free tools available on the internet for the same.

4. Please try to visit my home page http://www.yamanoor.com/gre/ to take advantage of the resources linked, that shall help you in your entire application process.

5. Also kindly note, I strongly discourage any personal messages or communications across the group. I will be moderating without exception, any messages that are either low in utility, or are sensitive, racial, or disapprovable in any manner.

6. It is my earnest request that you tell more friends about the group so that we can help serve a larger group of interested people. Also, if you have web pages, kindly consider using the promotion tools to make the process of subscribing easier for your visitors.

7. Do mail in more suggestions as and when you wish and think it is necessary. Every word is listened to.

8. A final note, as you see, the group's objective is to not only help and provide suggestions, it is also to dispel all sorts of rumors about the process that keep cropping up now and then. So, it is upto you to ask as many questions as you can.

Thanks for being a part of the movement.

Good Luck

Srihari

(GRE Success! ) What is a research statement - similar to statement of purpose or research proposal?

Hi all,

I am applying for a scholarship and the procedure entails me to submit a "research statement". However, the website does not help in explaining what a research statement should include. i.e. should research statement consist of our past experiences and motivation to carry out research in this area, like statement of purpose? Or, it should consist of things like how I i ntend to pursue my intended topic, what existing research has been accomplished and what future outcome I am expecting from the current study, like research proposal?

To clarify matters, I email the admin department and one of the professors, who I would like to be my supervisor. The admin team came back and said that it should be like research proposal. However, the professor said that it should be like research statement.

So, now I am even more confused with these conflicting replies. I would be grateful if you can share your knowledge/experiences with me. Thank you for your considerations and hope to hear from you soon.

Best regards,
Musabbir

Re: (GRE Success! ) What is a research statement - similar to statement of purpose or research proposal?

Hello Musabbir,

It would have to be what you would do, not as much a specific proposal, but where the general intent of your research is going. You could for example say in your research statement that your goal is to use nanotechnology to advance cancer treatments, through specific means such as creating pathways, blocking enzymes, etc. etc. You are in effect suggesting what research you would like to do and not as much about a specific research proposal.

Is this helpful?

Good Luck,

Srihari

Re: (GRE Success! ) Profile Evaluation

Hello Anum,

You have a great profile, with a silver medal and a publication. On this group we don't provide you with a recommended list of schools, but can help guide you through the process. Aside from USA, Canada and Europe might offer options for you.

The first thing you should do is focus on specific programs of interest to you, and then come up with a list through internet research and such, and we can provide you with whatever information we know about the schools on the list.

Good Luck,

Srihari

RE: (GRE Success! ) What is a research statement - similar to statement of purpose or research proposal?

Hi Srihari,

Thank you so much for your reply.

Yes, your suggestion makes lot of sense to solve the conundrum I was in. So, you are saying that I have to write a research proposal (and not my background/motivation) but not so detailed?

I think I will have to tailor my research statement a bit more to the specific project because the scholarship I am applying to lists all the proposed topic of Phd from MIT and I have to pick one topic, rather than a research area of faculty (which is generally the case). Moreover, there is lot of work already done by previous researchers at MIT and others, so I have to find shortcomings and suggest my line of thought.

At least the professor I emailed to came ba ck saying that he would suggest the length of the research statement to be around 1 page or so, hence this prevent me from writing long document.

Thank once again for your continuous contribution to this group.

Best regards,
Musabbir

Re: (GRE Success! ) What is a research statement - similar to statement of purpose or research proposal?

Hello Mussabir,

You should keep your statement within the 1page limit so that people would read through it. A brief statement, a small paragraph that is, that indicates how your background suits you for this is fine.

Good Luck,

Srihari

RE: (GRE Success! ) Profile Evaluation

Hi Anum,

Your profile is good. Publications always help. I did my undergrad in UK, depending on what you want to do, the unis here are good as well. Look at the course structures at various top unis around the world and get an idea what each uni brings to the table and whether you are interested in that course or not.

Not sure if that helps.

Best regards,
Musabbir
