(GRE Success! ) File - Monthly Reminder

Hello,

This is to remind you that you are still a member of GRESUCCESS, a group that aspires to help people, and dispel rumors regarding GRE, TOEFL, TSE, and other standardized tests, as well as, the entire application process in general. The group is also attempting to broaden its arms with quaint research on general aspects and observations of studying abroad. Please feel free to mail your concerns to the group by emailing to gre-success <at> yahoogroups.com

1. If you have any private queries, or if you are shy of asking a question in front of hundreds of people, let me re - assure you that you are entering a group of cultured people who will not laugh, disapprove or hold you in disdain. If still, you are apprehensive, please mail your queries to me at yamanoor <at> yahoo.com

2. Kindly try to make maximum use of the group by accessing and contributing to the links, database, files, photos and calendar sections of the group. Please be discreet. I shall remove any offensive material. Kindly add to any of the relevant tables in the database. Please upload files that you think will be useful for the members in the group. Kindly check for, and abstain from adding too large, or virus loaded files. Please upload any photographs of yours that you would wish to share with us (This shall be subject to scrutiny though..flimsy bikinis and flashy pets are fine...but I still insist on cross checking! :)). Also, please upload any important deadlines that you think might benefit the group. It is also not a bad idea to put up your birth date, test date etc on the calendar. This is a group full of fun loving people and we would like to share your joy!

3. Unfortunately, our group does not have the rights to use the polls section. I don't know how that came into existence. Kindly bear with me. We shall use free tools available on the internet for the same.

4. Please try to visit my home page http://www.yamanoor.com/gre/ to take advantage of the resources linked, that shall help you in your entire application process.

5. Also kindly note, I strongly discourage any personal messages or communications across the group. I will be moderating without exception, any messages that are either low in utility, or are sensitive, racial, or disapprovable in any manner.

6. It is my earnest request that you tell more friends about the group so that we can help serve a larger group of interested people. Also, if you have web pages, kindly consider using the promotion tools to make the process of subscribing easier for your visitors.

7. Do mail in more suggestions as and when you wish and think it is necessary. Every word is listened to.

8. A final note, as you see, the group's objective is to not only help and provide suggestions, it is also to dispel all sorts of rumors about the process that keep cropping up now and then. So, it is upto you to ask as many questions as you can.

Thanks for being a part of the movement.

Good Luck

Srihari

Re: (GRE Success! ) About this year US university budget

Hello Ravinder,

Late as my reply is, it is also not very helpful. Most of the world operates on extreme euphoria and extreme misery. When things were going good, universities, firms and individuals did not care to double check the information in front of them.

When things were going a little bad, they all decided to press the panic button and hide in the darkest corner possible.

Why do I think this is happening? Because we actually watched 22-year old MBA Graduates get 6 figure salaries and did not stop to act on the stupidity.

When things got bad, the new Global Village Idiot Merkel (who has replaced the erstwhile Bush) decided to call on "Global" "Lead ers" and launch a rant against the US Economy.

Well, if she knows so much why doesn't she fix it? And oh, good job on getting the gas from the Russians...

So you see, in a world of irresponsibility, trusting a system is never a good idea.

You have already applied. You have cast your die. Now you should await the results and act accordingly.

And, understand and differentiate between the systems. India used to follow the license Raj where "stability" meant a Government job where you could earn cushy bribes and pensions without lifting a finger for about 37 years...

The Government "servants" as we put it ironically are still swimming in bribes and inefficiency while, in 1991 we decided to go the "open market" system way.

This means instead of actually doing anything good for ourselves, just like the rest of the world we pegged ourselves onto the only existing economy - the US Economy. So, bitching and moaning about it is not going to help.

The US economy is based on "capitalism". Which means there is no stability - ever. It relies on entrepreneurship and "flukes" - a larger than life Vegan approach to life. This is very opposed to either our "Licensism" or "Consumerism" both of which rather roughly and unkindly translate to "What the white man makes, we buy".

So, this is just a great lesson for you, me and everyone involved. There is only one economy - the US economy. We all rely on it, like it or not. The degree of reliance is a direct proportionality.

So, if you are looking into the US, be looking at it because you will get good quality of education, mutual respect and if you make a lot of bucks, a lot of respect. Compare this to Australia and Europe and you are still Gold!

Do not apply on the basis of H1Bs and "markets" and "job opportunities" because, sooner or later all of these mundane thought processes will only lead to disappointmen t. That is, if you have ideals and manage to remember them as time progresses.

As a final word, panic or not - the choice is personal. In my almost 30 years of existence I have seen more than my share and have pleasantly surprise-ably survived!  Without pushing the panic button - even once.

If your true desire is to live an educated and integral life, it is going to be very tough and writhed in cynicism, but, if you stick with it (and most people give up at the first opportunity), will happen! Religious leaders have been very successful at grasping this and defending the supposed God's reticence, laziness and inaction.

You, and I could use it to our own advantage, progress and prosperity rather than killing and molesting women.

In the end, I am sure you will get great admits and do just fine!!! :)

Good Luck,

Srihari

Dear Group,
It is very discouraging condition that funds to universities are dried up.
I applied for the chemsitry Ph.D. programme in U.S. Is it possible to convert my Ph.D. application to a M.S. programme now. Is the situation that much worse. I am feeling very bad now. I applied for 10 univ and the whole process cost me 1.3 lakh INR. When this thing is going to be cured. If any university offers me an admission is it good to go there or stay here and work for another year or so( I am working from past one and half year). There are lot of questions indeed. hmmm god please help us.

Universities are short of funds. So at the end of this academic year, there will NOT be the usual $100 (a YEAR) increase in graduate student stipend. But apartment rents have gone up by $100 a MONTH!

But does it matter for admissions? I do not think so. In fact I expect the universities to admit every other student for masters program and deny every other student for a PhD program. I am just exaggerating a bit there. My point is, it matters only to students who expect to receive some form of funding from the university. if you are applying for a masters, I do not think it would make any difference.

Hi,

Today I learned that due to present American economical condition, the universities are cutting their annual budget. Will the chance of getting admission of this year will decrease compared to the previous years?

Thanks in advance

(GRE Success! ) TAMU Reject for me

Hello all

On Jan 31st, I have got an official confirmation of rejection from TAMU.

TAMU - ECE department has denied me admission for the fall 2009 admissions.

I am extremely disappointed since TAMU was one of my best bets. And they did not even offer me a reason for reject, when asked about it.

Anyway, I am truly afraid about my chances in the other universities too - I have 4 remaining UMCP, UMass, Iowa State & Virginia Tech. I had applied to only 5 universities. i did not apply to lower ranked "safe" universities because, I felt that there is no point in doing an MS just for the sake of it.

Anyway, keeping up my hopes for the remaining 4 utys

(GRE Success! ) Admissions Decision Dilemma

Hi, I have applied to Texas A&M and they sent me a message like this:

"Electrical Engineering has returned your application to our office
with an admissions decision on 1/30/2009, and we will communicate this
decision via postal mail as long as you have paid the application fee."

Do you think they accepted my application or declined? Please send
