general aspects and observations of studying abroad. Please feel free to mail your concerns to the group
by emailing to gresuccess@...

re - assure you that you are entering a group of cultured people who will not laugh, disapprove or hold you in
disdain. If still, you are apprehensive, please mail your queries to me at yamanoor@...

Re: (GRE Success! ) PLS HELP SOON

Hi Brindha,
Bioengineering is a great area to app in. And all the best for
your GRE. Please remember that GRE score is not the only
criteria for selection of a candidate. Without knowing your
other credentials, its not possible for us to suggest univs.
besides, you need to go through the web pages of universities
and decide on which ones appeal most to *you*. After a broad
list is arrived at, it may be possible for us to help you.
Happy preparation.

(GRE Success! ) Requesting Info - Reg.

Hi,

I am planning to apply for Graduate Program in Fall 2006. I would
like to get some insight about the various universities/courses.

My CV Summary:

B.Tech(EEE) (REC, Calicut) 76%
GRE(General) 1370/1600
                               Verbal – 620
                               Quantitative – 750
                               Analytical – 4.5/6)
TOEFL: 237-293
Work Experience 4 years as S/W Developer
Currently on deputation to USA

I would like to know about:

1) Universities that I can apply to, with this score.
Preference:
i) Graduate Programs with a blend of technology and management
(Eg.: MIS/ MS in IT/ MS in MOT, etc..).

2) Scope/Prospects of these suggested graduate programs (Placement
opportunities..) in these Univs.

3) %probability of me getting into these Universities, with
financial aid? Specific details would help.

I would really appreciate your response.

Re: (GRE Success! ) Requesting Info - Reg.

hi Surya,

you have very good credentials.
All the questions that you have asked is the
groundwork that you need to do.

Basically you got to look into the university CISE
department websites and see if work is going in your
area of interest and then check for the ranking of the
university. Since you have very good credentials, look
in top 30 schools. Buy grad rankings from usnews. It
comes for some 10 or 15 USD, i guess.

The answer to your first question is you got to do the
homework and come up with a list of universities. Then
the guys in the forum can comment on your university
list, saying so and so university is good or bad or
OK, whatever. But they can't sit and start searching
universities which will match your profile. I hope you
got the message.

w.r.t the second question, come up with the university
list and the career resource center website of each
school will tell you the prospects in the school.

W.r.t. your third question, once you come up with the
university list after your groundwork then the folks
in the group can comment whether that university has
some funds or not or some idea about it.

(GRE Success! ) Some queries...urgent

Hi all,

My name is Manoj. I am giving my gre and toefl in oct. Since I will be left with very little time after the exam for other things like univs selection, SOP and recos etc, I am surfing for the universities to apply to.
For this, I need the ranking of the univs. I visited the usnews.com but I am puzzled over some issues:

1. There are two fields viz computer engineering and computer science. Which one I should opt for? and what is the difference in the degress offered?

2. the USNEWS site provides the ranking for the first 3 universites and asks for payment for the rest of the universities. What should I do? How did you get the rankings? Which other source gives the ranking info? Shall I register with usnews.com by credit card to get access to the whole ranking?

3. In addition to the general ranking, we also look at the ranking by the discipline like CS. Now, in addition to this, do we also get ranking according to the field of study like Systems, AI, vision etc.?

4. How to use the rankings (general and specific to our discipline) effectively to zero down on the universities which I am going to apply.?

5. Shall I select the final list of universities solely on the basis of the rankings?? Or shall I visit each univ's website to narrow down the search?

6. Which other factors should I consider before zeroing on to the final list? (factors like aid, placements, no of indian students, cost etc...and how to get the info abt the same)

Please reply back
