(GRE Success! ) File - Monthly Reminder

Hello,

This is to remind you that you are still a member of GRESUCCESS, a group that aspires to help people, and
dispel rumors regarding GRE, TOEFL, TSE, and other standardized tests, as well as, the entire
application process in general. The group is also attempting to broaden its arms with quaint research on
general aspects and observations of studying abroad. Please feel free to mail your concerns to the group
by emailing to gresuccess@...

1. If you have any private queries, or if you are shy of asking a question in front of hundreds of people, let me
re - assure you that you are entering a group of cultured people who will not laugh, disapprove or hold you in
disdain. If still, you are apprehensive, please mail your queries to me at yamanoor@...

2. Kindly try to make maximum use of the group by accessing and contributing to the links, database, files,
photos and calendar sections of the group. Please be discreet. I shall remove any offensive material.
Kindly add to any of the relevant tables in the database. Please upload files that you think will be useful
for the members in the group. Kindly check for, and abstain from adding too large, or virus loaded files.
Please upload any photographs of yours that you would wish to share with us (This shall be subject to
scrutiny though..flimsy bikinis and flashy pets are fine...but I still insist on cross checking! :)).
Also, please upload any important deadlines that you think might benefit the group. It is also not a bad
idea to put up your birth date, test date etc on the calendar. This is a group full of fun loving people and we
would like to share your joy!

3. Unfortunately, our group does not have the rights to use the polls section. I don't know how that came into
existence. Kindly bear with me. We shall use free tools available on the internet for the same.

4. Please try to visit my home page http://www.geocities.com/yamanoor to take advantage of the resources
linked, that shall help you in your entire application process.

5. Also kindly note, I strongly discourage any personal messages or communications across the group. I

(GRE Success! ) To Swatee

Dear Swatee,
I have given my opinions based on whatever I know. I hope
this helps.

1)Clarkson univ NY (ELect)
Junk. Ranked very low. That too it’s a private college and its in NY.
All this would mean that you will need a lot of money. Think twice.

2)univ of Arkansas Fayettville (Elect)
This college has a Elec dept. That’s all. Not much research. I don’t
think you can do anything worthwhile here.

3)South Carolina (Telecom)
Well, I think the telecom program is connected to CS dept here I guess.
Pls check anyway. This school is just about OK. Fees,Cost of living are
all moderate. But the reputation of the school is not very encouraging.
Try if you want.

4)Lousiana Tech (Elec)
Unknown school for most Indians. But this college has programs in good
fields like Communication and DSP etc (Yes!). Fees is also less (or
moderate). So is the cost of living. Indian population is very less! But
as such the reputation is not so good. Try if you want.

5)Old dominion univ Virginia (Engg Mngmt)

Yes. This college does NOT have an Elec dept. That’s why I see that you
are applying Engg Management. Maybe you will get here. Again this is an
obscure college. I would not apply here,if I were you.

6)Detroit Mercy Michigan (Engg Mngmt)
Never heard of it. Probably does not have an Elec dept. That’s why I do
not know.

7)Lamar (Elect)
This is a notorious college for its high admit rates! They are doing
NOTHING in the elec dept there. Yes! NOTHING. They "have" an elec
dept,so to say. No research whatsoever. Its worthless applying here. But
since its in Texas, cost of living may be manageable. Watch out for the
large Indian population anyway!

Overall, I think your applications are very much on the lower side. If I
were you, I would retake GRE and apply again. If you feel like applying
with this score, you can. But let me caution you, even if you get admit
in one of these colleges, you must be prepared to face more hurdles in
finances and Visa. Well, just watch out. My best wishes. Do mail if you
have more queries.

Re: (GRE Success! ) have any learning tips?

If you plan well, you can balance GATE and GRE. But do realize that GATE will need a lot more effort than GRE, so I would rather not walk on dangerous turf there. However, the choice is upto you.

For tips on GRE, I request you to take a look at some of our archives first. If you still come up with questions, please do email us.

Good Luck,

Srihari

Re: (GRE Success! ) have any learning tips?

I feel appearing for GRE in 3rd year vacation and appearing for GATE in 4th year should  be a solution for you, as you are just in 2nd year.
Finally it depends on person to person.

Re: (GRE Success! ) have any learning tips?

Hi
GATE and GRE are 2 different tracks. As srihari pointed out preparing for
GATE is bit more rigorous. But still you can balance it, if you do it very
carefully. The GATE syllabi is fully focussed on the curriculum that you are
into now. So first get a copy of the latest GATE syllabi. I believe you
should have those subject spread over all four years. Each semester you
study those subjects very seriouly by referring to as many standard texts as
possible. Doing so, your preperation for GATE will be in synch with our
study at college.

As for GRE, you have spend the rest of the time. My advise is to focus on
vocabulary in the first few months. As for quants, math ability is endemic
to indians. SO you should be able to get 800 with relatively less effort on
comparison to verbal.

Best Wishes
Karthick Jayaraman
