Authentication Problem

Hi!

We’re having a problem with our EZProxy authentication.  I emailed you about a few weeks ago, but then didn’t follow up as I was out of town at a conference.

We have our databases set up for IP recognition on-campus and EZProxy off-campus.

1.      When we try to access most of our databases remotely, the proxy authentication fails, with a message of ‘Oops, this link appears to be broken.’

2.       The databases that have a separate link for ‘off-campus access’ work okay remotely, but give the same error message if we try to use the ‘off-campus access’ link from on campus.

I restarted EZProxy yesterday, but that didn’t make any difference.

Today I went into the config file, checked all the database info and changed ‘Domain’ to ‘DJ’ and ‘Host Name’ to ‘HJ’.  Then I restarted Ezproxy, but it still doesn’t seem to be working correctly.  Our webpage is library.ggbts.edu.

I’ve emailed the OCLC support, but thought I’d throw my problem out to the group as well.

Thanks for any help you can give me!

Shib errors in messages.txt

We have been seeing a number of Shibboleth related errors in our EZProxy messages.txt log file since April
this year. We have not encountered or received reports of any EZProxy operational problems coinciding
with these errors.

The errors follow:

1. "Unable to read updated Shibboleth sites ukfederation-metadata.xml, using in-memory copy"

As the shib errors tend to occur sporadically, I'm guessing that EZproxy is having occasional trouble
downloading the metadata file (as it's nearly 7 meg now). Has anyone else seen these errors?

We are also seeing the following error occasionally, though this looks like it does not relate to Shibboleth:

2009-07-02 19:42:25 IssueInstant time disagreement, check system clock if recurrent: 2009-07-02T18:28:15.599Z

I would be interested to hear from any EZProxy customers who have experienced such errors.

Our environment:
EZproxy 5.1c GA on Solaris 10 (in a Solaris zone).
Shibboleth 1.3 IdP for authentication.

Jim

EZproxy 5.1c and III authentication

Hi all

We just upgraded from 4.0b to 5.1c and have encountered a problem with authentication.  We authenticate students using III authentication against our Millennium ILS, and staff using the domain.

Up until this morning, when we upgraded, the exproxy.usr entry below worked fine for us:

::iii

#Specify DATE format. Options are "dmy" or "ymd"

date dmy

#Specify PASSWORD.

password pin

#Specify the PATRONAPI host

host kea.massey.ac.nz

#Refuse access to patrons whose expiry date has passed

IfExpired; Deny iexpired.htm

#Refuse access to patrons who aren't entitled to access electronic resources

IfType 040,041,042,043,044,045,046,047,048,049,050,051,114,115,116,117,118,119,170,173,177,185,200,201,207,227;Deny logup.htm

#Put Singapore patrons into the Singapore group

IfType 140; Group Singapore

IfAuthenticated; stop

/iii

::domain=MASSEY

Post-upgrade, the same entry in user.txt doesn’t work well.  Students are still authenticated fine using III authentication, but the domain authentication only works if we remove the entire iii entry - ie, everything between ::iii and /iii.

We’re going to start experimenting with our iii entry to see if we can pin down what’s preventing staff logins from getting to the domain entry, but I’d also be interested to know whether any other EXproxy 5.1c users have encountered this problem.  Anyone out there?

Thanks

Tim

EZProxy and NetLibrary printing issue

I opened a case with OCLC support about a printing issue with NetLibrary, which has occurred since we implemented single sign-on authentication. Our patrons cannot print from ebooks. Has anyone else had experience with this issue?

Here is what I wrote to technical help at OCLC:

We implemented EZProxy single sign-on authentication for NetLibrary a few months ago.

We have discovered that patrons cannot print from NetLibrary, and think that authentication is the issue or problem somehow. We have our entire OPAC proxied. However, even if NetLibrary is accessed directly from our website, printing from ebooks is problematic.

When viewing an ebook, from within the ebooks control options, when a patron clicks on print, the message is returned, “You must be logged in to print. Please click your browser’s back button and login to print.”

In testing this, I go back to the main page and I “login.” First the EZProxy authentication page pops up, and I authenticate.

This brings me back to the main page of NetLibrary and I see at the top “Logout” which tells me I am logged in.

Then I pull up the book  that I was using if it allows me.  Sometimes the message says something to the effect that the book is already in use (as I was just using it) and I’ll have to wait until it is free, which, understandably, is quite upsetting for our patrons.

Other times I can get right back into the book, but I cannot print. Upon clicking the Print icon from within the ebook, the message says “0 more pages may be printed from this title today.” I’ll pull up other titles, and the message is the same for each. The way this feature is functioning is quite frustrating to our patrons.

Do my patrons need to re-create individual accounts in order to print? If so, how is this done? Just by going to the “Edit My Account” link?

When logged in via EZProxy using my institutional credentials, if I click on “Edit My Account” in the top right-hand corner of the screen, options appear for Personal Information, including creation of password, and Security information, allowing me to choose a security question and answer. Does this show for all AustinCollege patrons? The first field states AustinCollege for First Name. Last Name says Patron. If patrons complete this information, does it affect the login for the entire college, or does it create an individual account for the patron? I hope, as the system admin, I am the only one who has these options for the general login by EZProxy authentication.

RE: EZProxy and NetLibrary printing issue

So it would be strictly an issue within NetLibrary?

We were concerned that somehow proxying our catalog was causing a problem, but I noticed that accessing NetLibrary directly (bypassing the OPAC) and attempting to print is giving the same error.

Thanks,

Shannon

I am able to print from NetLibrary (through Exproxy) . . .  We are automatically authenticated, and when I get the error message that one must be logged in to print – click the “back” button on your browser to login, I do that, am prompted for my Ezproxy login, then can return to the book and print.

Not very user-friendly, but it does work.

Yes, I’m going to report it as a NetLibrary problem. I think the more of us who do, the better, to get OCLC to understand that this is not a problem isolated to one user.

So it would be strictly an issue within NetLibrary?

We were concerned that somehow proxying our catalog was causing a problem, but I noticed that accessing NetLibrary directly (bypassing the OPAC) and attempting to print is giving the same error.

Thanks,

Shannon

I don’t think it has to do with EZP. I see the same “You must be logged in to print” error with no EZP in the mix. –Nicholas

Subject: [ezproxy] EZProxy and NetLibrary printing issue

Does this show for all Austin College patrons? The first field states Austin College for First Name. Last Name says Patron. If patrons complete this information, does it affect the login for the entire college, or does it create an individual account for the patron? I hope, as the system admin, I am the only one who has these options for the general login by EZProxy authentication.

RE: EZProxy and NetLibrary printing issue

I just tried the process again, and now I can print as long as I am logged in, whereas this morning I was not able to print because of the “0 pages left” message.

When you click the back button to login, and then return to print from the item, does it give you the “item in use” message? This happens to us, but not every time.

Thanks,

Shannon
