AusStats and the ABS

Dear All,

We are experiencing an issue here with the Australian Bureau of
Statistics where the AusStats website will typically, 9 times out of 10,
prompt for a username and password. As we are registered with the site
for IP and domain access the password prompt should not be displayed,
and as such we have nothing to put into the box.

If the user clicks on the ok button on the authentication prompt then
they will get access to the protected content. I've tried using the V
line in the configuration file for EzProxy but this unfortunately brings
up a "403: Unauthorised Access" error message. For those that are
interested the website uses Lotus Domino version 5.06a.

Does anyone have any thoughts as to what we can do to resolve the issue?
Has anyone successfully got EzProxy working with the AusStats website,
or a similar website using the Lotus Domino server?

With many thanks for any thoughts and input.

Re: AusStats and the ABS

Hi Corey

I don't think this is an EZProxy issue.

The same thing happens here [and at many other sites around Aust]
whether one goes via EZP or via one's Uni proxy.

It is a very annoying, and seemingly insoluble ABS issue. ABS have been
aware of this problem for at least 2 years but shrug their shoulders
each time they are asked or reminded about it.

It has also been raised on a few occasions on the CAUL Datasets list. If
approaching ABS IT Support doesn't work, it may be worth raising again
with CAUL.

Regards
Steve Cramond.

Re: AusStats and the ABS

Dear all,

This is definitely not EZProxy - I have seen it happen on campus several
times. If you just click OK without putting anything in the box, it
tends to let you in. As Steve says, ABS makes noises about fixing it
occasionally, but never do. It has been at least 2 years since I first
heard of it. I understand that this offer comes up for renewal this year
(via AVCC) so it would be good that CAUL noted this as an ongoing
problem before we renew.

Re: AusStats and the ABS

Dear Stephen,

I to agree it isn't an EzProxy problem, I was hoping I could use EzProxy
to get around the ABS problem. Many thanks for your thoughts, and
apologies for sending my email twice, there was a server at the
University of Washington telling me my message hadn't been delivered to
the list because of a possible virus infection. How a plain text email
was supposed to contain a virus I don't know. I've checked with ITS here
and spent over an hour scanning my own workstation, it's an old one, and
no virus was found so it looks like it is not only a false positive but
a message in error because my email made it to the list.

With thanks.

Re: AusStats and the ABS

Dear David,

Many thanks for your thoughts, I'll be taking it up with our
Acquisitions Manager here to see if we can get some further
communication happening with the ABS at a higher level. She may even
post to the datasets list for me.

With thanks.

Re: AusStats and the ABS

Hi Corey

Thanks for the e-mail! I was a bit perplexed when I saw your second
e-mail to the list.

Maybe you are on to something re using EZP to get round the Ausstats
false-negative authentication pop-up. Hope David and I haven't poured
too much cold water on it.

However, this really is something that ABS should fix, rather than us
having to think up work-arounds, so approaching CAUL in the context of a
contract renewal may ultimately be the way to go.

Regards
Steve C

Proxy server

Hi:

We're thinking of moving EZProxy from a standalone server to our WIN2000 Unicorn server. iLink and EZProxy would run on the same machine.

Are there reasons not to do this?

Re: Proxy server

We run our Ezproxy server on the same server that we run our Unciorn
server on. We run it on Solaris, the hardware is quite old now (3-4
years) and we've never had a problem with it. The only thing is, if you
are running Ezproxy in the proxy by hostname mode (hence on port 80),
then you'll need to assign the box another IP address for Ezproxy,
otherwise it will conflict with webcat/iLink.
