BelajarEnglish - Posting Guidelines

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/belajarenglish

Please kindly read the following guidelines and adhere to them strictly:

  • Emails must be related to learning English language. Other emails - chain emails, business opportunities, etc are not welcome here. Please look for other groups more suitable for that purposes.

  • Emails must be in English. We come from different countries - Malaysia, Mexico, China, Turkey, USA, etc - all with different languages. Our only main purpose here is to learn (and teach) English.

  • Please be very careful when expressing your opinions. What you find acceptable might hurt the feelings of other people who have different cultural backgrounds. Be extra cautious with generalizations and references to race, religion and gender.

  • Personal attacks are not permitted. If you have something to say that is relevant only to the person, please send your message to him/her only.

  • DO NOT SHOUT. IN EMAILS, CAPITAL LETTERS MEAN SHOUTING.

  • When replying to a message, please don't quote the whole of the original (unless it is extremely important). Delete everything that is not relevant to your reply.

  • Very short emails (e.g.. only one line) are not encouraged. Although short messages are perfectly OK, they should always be meaningful.

  • Do not send your unsubscribe request to the list. Nobody is interested in a message that only says "Unsubscribe me". You can unsubscribe automatically by sending an email to BelajarEnglish-nomail <at> yahogroups.com or BelajarEnglish-unsubscribe <at> yahoogroups.com. When you join a mailing list, you have certain responsibilities as well as rights - unsubscribing yourself is one such responsibility.

  • If you have any comment or point to add to this message, please send it to belajarenglish-owner <at> yahoogroups.com

Thank you.
Ibrahim Abdullah.

How to delete part of an email.

  • Whenever you press "REPLY", previous email would be displayed in the BODY PANEL. You can turn this feature off, depending on the program (software) you are using. Body panel is where you write your message is.

  • To delete the old message, you can simply press "DELETE" until the message is deleted. To delete the whole message, press "CTRL-A", i.e.. press key "CTRL" and key "A" together. You can see that the whole message is now selected. Press "DELETE".

  • You can also select which part of email to delete. Use your mouse. Put the cursor at the beginning of the part to be deleted, press your mouse key (left side). Do not let it go. Pull the cursor to the end of the part to be deleted and let go of the mouse. The required part to be deleted is now selected. Press "DELETE"

Using Alternate Reality Games in language education

r.e. European Union funded education project

ARGuing for Multilingual Motivation in Web 2.0  (ARGuing) is a European Union education project.

The project has created the first use of an Alternate Reality Game for motivating secondary school students to learn languages. The project has also learnt how an ARG can be adapted to almost any area of education.

The game that was created was called ' The Tower of Babel' and included a story designed to engage the target student group. The students had to save the planet by completing specific quests, collaboratively and internationally. The project has been a huge success with over 400 teachers and students from 17 countries playing the game ' The Tower of Babel'. In the final pilot over 9,000 quests were answered and 800 files uploaded.

The project has created a number of resources that are available online, these include:

  1. A re-usable game platform (on a Moodle platform) that includes multiple languages http://ictthatworks.net:8080/moodle/ - you can view inside the platform by sending an email to me. Please place in the subject line of the email – TofB platform
  2. A project website with additional information http://www.arg-education.eu . On the website are papers to download including:
    1. A methodology to make and use Alternate Reality Games in education
    2. A set of case studies of other ARGs and serious games with empirical evidence of results
    3. A set of use case scenarios that show examples of how ARGs could be used for other subjects or cross-subjects
    4. An online teacher training course to enable educators to use the ARG the project produced
    5. Summaries of papers on the pedagogy, evaluation and the technology employed. (full papers are available in the conference proceedings of the 3rd European Conference on Games Based Learning http://academic-conferences.org/ecgbl/ecgbl2009/ecgbl09-proceedings.htm )

The project team are also offering consultancy services to other educators interested in using ARGs in education.

Please feel free to contact us with any questions.
