[Fwd: Macleans article : How computers make our kids stupid]

From the TTCS list. Should be interesting for our resident primary
school teachers.

Interesting read, given the importance placed on having computers in
primary school with internet access at primary schools - Dev T

How computers make our kids stupid
June 06, 2005, SUE FERGUSON, Macleans

There's growing evidence that too much cyber-time dumbs down our children

The first thing you notice opening the door to Les Black's classroom is
the smell. It's a dank, earthy aroma from a dozen planters perched on
shelves or suspended from the ceiling. Sunlight filters through a row of
wood-framed windows onto the 27 fourth-graders. A boy standing at the
front relates the story of his grandfather's life, impressing upon his
audience that the old man did not always act within the letter of the
law. His classmates squirm in their seats. Some fiddle with pencils. One
boy thoughtfully caresses a papier mâché snake resting on his desk.

Presentation College, San Fernando

The principal of Presentation College, San Fernando called today and
asked for assistance in fixing up the school's library with high-tech
hardware and software. Apparently the Ministry of Education in T&T has
contacted schools as asked them for a Dream List of what they want.
Maybe Shiva and Ama can talk more about it?

His requirements:

Hardware:
- About 20 computers for the school, fully loaded and as high-end as
possible.
- Digital still cameras, digital video cameras
- Scanners, printers

Software:
- Tool to develop subject material, a.k.a. Burrokeet
- Tool to offer course material online, a.k.a. full featured LCMS which
can use the subject material developed (i like Moodle since it can use
Apache2)
- Tools to keep a history of students' progress, a.k.a a feature of the
LCMS
- Tools to allow students/teachers to create videos, etc (of school events)

Ok, so what we need is to come up with a packaged solution and send him
a quote for him to forward to the Ministry. Of course, being a GoRTT
initiative, he did say that it might take a year before anything comes
out of it.

So how do we do this? Any ideas??? He will like to get the quotation
early next week.

A quick response:

It might be a good idea to see what the sec. school syllabus
covers.

Was he given any price range?
Did MOE ask him to state what software he wants or
can he choose?
What about communicating with the IT teacher there, if
there is one?

Re: Presentation College, San Fernando

some good questions.

it doesn't matter what the IT syllabus covers since it's to be used for
all subjects. remember they also want to use it to develop subject
material for online use.

there's no price range. when i asked, he said it is a "dream" list so
basically to run wild with line items.

yes the quotation will include cost for software. FLOS software is
preferred and there will be fees to install/customise it (indirect
funding for Burrokeet).

there should be an IT teacher there, but it's the vacation period so if
i can communicate with him before i submit the quote i will.

Re: Presentation College, San Fernando

don't have RHS's contact number. guess he may have contacted you by now.

i don't have a dream list of hardware, so i'll accept your suggestions,
except perhaps for the sound cards, but help me out here. i read
somewhere that the onboard sound is better than any card except for the
audigy 2 so for what reasons would they need it?

we'll include the cost for windows licenses because i understand the MoE
will want to cut prices.......so if they do, then we can still get some
decent hardware.....and install linux.

don't know if they shopping around. i guess they will be. our
battalion of past students is huge and well connected.

now here's the thing........CIS is unregistered so we won't be able to
send a quote with a CIS letterhead......however if i use Trini PC as a
strategic partner of the CIS that supplies hardware, it might work.
also something similar can be done for any software development required.

what about the software? can we begin to compile a list of software?

Office Productivity: OpenOffice.org
Image Editing - The Gimp
3D Editing - Blender
WWW Browsing - Firefox

What's a good multimedia distro to use? Most likely we will have to
install linux if the budget is cut.

looking forward to this discussion.

the audigy 2 will be needed if they are doing heavy pro video and audio editing (I some how got the
impression they will)

we'll include the cost for windows licenses because i understand the MoE

MoE has also anounced as I believe i told the list a few monts ago...they have already paid for a
microsoft open license, that means free legal MS for all schools and teachers as I was told.

ok. i got that impression too. i see no reason why we shouldn't
include them. i was just wondering how much better the audigy2 compared
to onboard audio.

so to summarise:

- 20 desktop computers (your specs, whatever you think they need)
- 2 digital video cameras (again, your specs)
- 2 digital still cameras, at least 8 megapixels
- 4 deskjet printers (capable of printing photos)
- 2 b&w laser printers (like the hp 4300 series)
- 2 color laser printers
