[JOB ADVERT] JAVA Developer

Please forgive the cross-posting (please forward to interested parties)

Please ensure all replies are sent to me privately unless otherwise
intended..

----------------------------------------

I finally have confirmation of the amount of the grant available for the
Learning Content Management System I have referred to in the past.
Consequently I am now able to advertise the job available.

This project will be proposed as one to come under the CIS banner. But
only once we have appointed the full time staff member described in this
advert. I don't have the time to do that right now so once we have staff
we can proceed.

Java/Javascript/XML Developer (with MPhil Studentship Option)
=============================================================

We have recently been awarded seed funding to develop a Learning Content
Management System (LCMS) based on Open Source technologies. In the first
instance, this funding is for a period of eight months, although it is
hoped that continuation funding will be secured before the end of this
initial period. We therefore have an opening for a full time Java
developer, preferably with knowledge of Javascript, XML, XSLT and
related technologies.

The project will build upon work carried out in the Department of

Re: [JOB ADVERT] JAVA Developer

Are you committed to Java?

Have you looked at any python based solutions?
http://www.plone.org
http://www.eduplone.net

I suspect that these are good Open Source options.

Yes is the short answer. The design is done the money is secured. No
negotiation space left, at least not at the conceptual level.

Sorry I forgot to answer this one...

We have looked at and eveluated all the LCMS systems on the market both
open source and commercial. They are all lacking in various ways
(different ways in different products).

This project will create something quite different not "just another"
LCMS. I know that's what they all claim, but there you go, that's why we
got the funding :-)

In other words there is *nothing* that does what we need it to do so we
have to build a new one. However, rest assured we will not be
reinventing the wheel - quite the ccontrary we will be bringing together
many of the best systems into a useable package.

I don't have the time to go into detail right now. Once the position has
been filled one of their first jobs will be to put together a public
information package about the project and get it out there. This is the
point at which design decisions etc. will be opened up for comment.
Until then, no discussion is possible, I am just trying to find the
right candidate - then they can discuss on my behalf (the candidate will
have pretty much a free reign as long as they deliver a product that
fulfills our requriements).

Re: [JOB ADVERT] JAVA Developer

I know that there's a lot of water under the bridge already, but I'd
strongly suggest that you at least make contact with the eduplone people
to identify where there can be synergy between their project and your
own. IMHO the eduplone project (http://www.eduplone.net), though young,
is well positioned, with a strong community. It represents the "most
likely to succeed" Open Source Learning Management option. I also think
it will develop the most rapidly and gather a cohesive community around
it very quickly.

Eduplone is an adequate product with a relatively active community. In
this you are correct.

However, it is not comatible with what we are doing. We have a very
specific set of objectives and requirements and to try and massage
eduplone into these would be artificial.

There is no benifit in us working with the eduplone community.

We will be working with the communities providing the funding and the
necessary projects we need, most notably:

- Eclipss (Application Framework)
- Cocoon (Publishing Framework)
- Lenya (Content Management System)

This is not up for negotiation, alliances have been made, funding has
been provided. This is an existing project (been active for 12 months
already), I have posted an advert for a job with a job description. That
is who we need and the skills we need.

Yes, you are correct Ace - sorry.

If anyone wishes to discuss the specifics of this Job advert please
address them to me personally.

If anyone wishes to discuess the use of Eduplone or any other software
within the context of a CIS project then please keep it on list.

With this last point in mind I will return to this list once staff are
in place to see if this community wishes to take in our project.

This is the grant I have been asking people in CIS to apply for. A
couple of people have promised applications but nothing delivered yet,
deadline is not until Feb 13th..

I am working on something with the ELearning Group in UWI and the SDNP
in Guyana had an interesting CIPS style proposal. The former would be
brought to this group if succesful, in the later I am not a principle
proposer so it is not up to me what happens to it.

There are no projects as yet in Trinidad or anywhere else since they
haven't had any complete funding rounds yet.
