Guidelines for WDSCI-L mailing list

Monthly posting of the guidelines for participation in the Websphere
Development Studio Client and Rational Developer for i mailing list.

Keep to the subject. The topic of the list is IBM's Websphere Development
Studio Client and Rational Developer for i. This includes all aspects of
WDSCi / RDi. Including, but not limited to: RSE, LPEX, Compiling,
Verification, EGL, Web development, Java development, and CODE/400.

Limited discussion of third party plug-in's is also allowed. It is,
however, recommend that questions about third party (non-IBM), non-open
source, plug-in's be directed to the vendor's technical support group.

Please be aware ... a number of IBM employees monitor this mailing list
and will offer help when possible. Please keep in mind that the IBM'ers
participate in this list on their spare time and so may not be able to
respond promptly if at all.

When starting a new discussion thread, *PLEASE* try to avoid replying to
an existing message to get the correct email address. When you reply to
an existing message, most email clients and the list archiving software
think that the new thread is part of the old thread, and will display it
as such.

When quoting messages, do not quote the entire message. Just quote the
parts that are needed to make the appropriate references.

Flames are absolutely prohibited. If you disagree with someone, feel
free to argue the facts, but no personal attacks will be tolerated.

The official language of the Midrange Systems Mailing List is English.

Re: Prefix commands don't always work

Responses to a few of your responses (thanks everyone)...

Concerning doing an update, RDi is up to date.

Concerning weaning myself off of SEU, I haven't used SEU in years, other
than to do a quick browse session. I use the SEU prefix commands, along
with Windows/LPEX keyboard shortcuts and the mouse as I see fit. I see
no good reason to stop using something that works because something new
has come along to replace it. There are times when a prefix command is
a better tool for me, and other times that I use the LPEX specific
commands. Kind of like a house painter that still uses a paint brush
rather than exclusively using a paint sprayer; there are times when the
paint brush is the better tool.

I'm hoping someone can come up with a reason this is happening, and a
fix. I'd like to start using RDi, but right now I can't go to
management and ask for the extra funds for a license, when WDSC is still
working fine, but RDi is so buggy I can't use it.

Doug

Re: Comparison tool

I have another question about the comparison tool. When I get it to come
up it shows the differences but in RSE I was able to copy from one to
another with the push of a button. How do I copy across when there is a
comparison or do I need to put them side by side and copy to a third
session underneath. There was an add on in RSE where I was able to copy
from side to side.

Re: Prefix commands don't always work

Doug;

I agree whole heartedly with your first paragraph, the right tool for the job.

I have never come across the problem you describe, and actually have very few issues with RDI over the last
year +. I have found that when RDI, or WDSC for that matter, start acting up I shut it down and start it with
-clean ("C:\Program Files\IBM\SDP\eclipse.exe" -product
com.ibm.etools.iseries.rdi.welcome.ide -clean) It takes 5-10 min to start up but the quirks are gone.

Generally we have to bounce our PCs twice a month (or more) for MS patches etc so I start RDI with -clean after
the bounce and almost never have to restart with -clean again.

If at all possible report the problem to IBM, it won't get fixed if they don't know about it.

Re: Prefix commands don't always work

Duane,

Thanks for reminding me of the clean option. I was aware of this, but I
never had to use this before with WDSC. I just tried it with RDi, and
so far (fingers crossed) it has not been acting flakey with the prefix
commands. I'll follow up in an hour or so, but so far I've used prefix
commands 5 times in a row without failure.

Re: Prefix commands don't always work

Well, spoke too soon. I started having some other weird problems; after
a few restarts of RDi and a reboot later, and I am right back to having
the weird prefix command errors.

I'm thinking that perhaps I need to create a brand new workspace instead
of trying to use my old workspace that I tried to import.

Unfortunately, real work is getting in the way of my experimenting, so
I'll have to put this aside for now, and go back to using WDSC for a
while. I'll try to start all over again and see if this is a corrupted
workspace (in the next day or two).

RDi 7.5 key bindings

I have been attempting to remove a key binding for CTRL+SHIFT+A. By
default (for me) it pops up a small window and asks me to pick from
"Open Plug-in Artifact" or "Open a member in Remote Systems LPEX
Editor". All I want it to do is "Open a member in Remote Systems LPEX
Editor". When ever I change the "Open Plug-in Artifact" and apply, the
functionality of CTRL+SHIFT+A disappears. When I go back into the Keys
preferences for CTRL+SHIFT+A "Open Plug-in Artifact" is back and "Open a
member in Remote Systems LPEX Editor" is now gone.

Can anyone give me a clue what the heck is happening and how to modify
the key bindings now (since they have changed from WDSC 7.0). I cannot
get it working.

Thanks, Matt

Re: RDi 7.5 key bindings

IIRC, go into Keys in Preferences:

* Highlight the one you want to change
* Click unbind and apply (which will remove them both)
* Find "open a member" in the box just below the Scheme dropdown
* Highlight the command
* Click in the Binding box
* Press "Ctrl+Shift+A"
* Click apply.

This is from memory. The eclipse Help may also explain this.

I definitely recommend this. I have not had any luck with importing
WDSC workspaces into RDi. Always something isn't working correctly,
usually not saving compile command changes between restarts.

Re: RDi 7.5 key bindings

I guess I should have mention that I have been in the preferences and attempted to modify the command I did not
want. I created a new workspace and I was able to modify the key bindings but what I found was that once I
removed the binding from the command I did not want the binding on the other disappeared. Something I had
not noticed before.

Anyway, I got the correct binding setup I wanted, now if I can only get 7.5 to import my connections, profiles
and filter groups (RDi 7.5 acts like it never even tried to convert my connections).

Thanks, Matt
