Re: installing v6

This is deadly serious.
It is incredible the number of threads concerning installation problems.

I have also been campaiging for an upgrade from V5.1. As I am the only user
I realize that this is just not possible.
I have just been given the go ahead to train the rest of the team and teach
them all I know. When we are all operationnal together, the argument for
upgrading will have more weight.

I am afraid that these apparent nightmares in the installation process will
put an end to the use of WDSc in our company. We are currently about 20
developers. It's no easy decision to install WDSc on each PC. From the
administrator's point of view, why waste all that time when PDM works ?

What can we do to ensure (when the time comes ) that the thing installs
correctly?

Re: DB2Java.zip?

I installed DB2 from the Websphere discs. However, the piece of code I've
imported references import:
import com.ibm.db2j.jdbc.DB2jDataSource;
but it doesn't find that in the db2java.zip file. For that matter, the
com in the db2java.zip file is capital COM/ibm/db2/jdbc

Am I missing an update to this file now?

I've talked to people who have done dozens of installs over the last six
months. We just created yet another ghost image for our upcoming technical
conference. Basically, our lab coordinator installed from disk and then
told it to update itself overnight. The next morning he looked at it and it
was done.

Although it's certainly not 100% bulletproof, I've looked at the list and I
sense that the product is getting more stable with every release, rather
than less stable. I'm not sure what Joel's issues are; but as Joel states,
there's not a lot of information there, just that it was "impossible to
install".

Anyway, you might consider downloading all the patches ahead of time. This
will make it a bit quicker to apply the upgrades to multiple machines; you
won't have to download multiple gigabytes for each machine. It is a tiny
bit more complicated, but IBM has been pretty good about documenting the
process.

Re: installing v6

My reccos:

Take the DVD and copy it to a shared folder. Do not use CDs. By the time
you get to insert the 3rd CD you have alread invested 2 or 3 hours into the
process, and thats where it usually fails.

Do not install all the optionals - even though you are tempted to. EGL and
other stuff can wait. These can be installed later. Do install the Iseries
components and test environment.

If you are using Windows have the users re-start the PC completely -- not
just turn their spiffy 17 inch flat panel on and off.

Ensure that at least 10GB of disk space is available. This is very
important - The DVD has about 3.5GB of compressed data on it and the
patches that are downloaded are just as "thin".

Ohh real important -- avoid installing into the C:\Program files\IBM ...
Eclipse runs out of directory string variable space very quickly and simply
hangs.
Install off the root into C:\wbsp or C:\rational. Keep the directory paths
as short as possible. This helps later when creating web-services from
ISeries applications and other JSP applications.

If you plan to share projects I would reccomend that all the users install
into a similar directory structure to prevent refactoring issues.

Avoid having the user workspace as a sub-folder within the installation
folder. That too should be off the root folder. This is just in case you
need to wipe the entire installation and start again.

Uninstall and Installing?

We have installed WDSCi on several machines then we replace a PC with an
upgraded PC. We may have had a problem with disc #6. And then when we
start the updates these errors occur.

If anyone has some feed back please let me know?

Thanks, James

Re: installing v6

David,

Just to enter a positive incident, We installed WDSC v6 on 3 PCs here, and
they all went smoothly. The install does take a couple of hours, and the
updates do take several more hours (over a T1 connection). The PC is still
usable as a terminal workstation while the install and updates are
running.

In my experience v6 is much more stable than v5. I tried to get started
with v5, but got frustrated and returned to PDM. Since the WDSC v6
installation, I've switched to WDSC as my primary work environment.

Re: installing v6

Don't have time to look it up but it's either in the archives or on
systeminetwork forums but you can download the patches to a local server
& do the updates from the local server...which means only one time of
downloading for the PCs from the 'net. That should dramatically improve
the update process.

Thanks,
Tommy Holden

Re: installing v6

I just finished installing V6 on a new PC at work, I've only installed
this version from the DVD, but have never had any problems. This is my 4th
install of it, (previous work PC, home PC and laptop) it does taka a long
time, but no errors, As suggested in other posts, I let the updates run
overnight. We do have the "updater" update loaded locally on a network
drive. With only 5-6 people here to use it and PC's not updated that often
We probably won't make a local mirror of the main upgrade set. Now I need
to show the Guys who build PC's how to do this for the other 3 in my group
who are getting updated PC's finally.
