question about extracting images

Hello,

how to extract images from PDF in the highest possible resolution?
Extracted images should be in the highest quality but the resolution
should not be redundantly high.

Or how to recognize original resolution of PDF file in dpi?

Thanks for your help,

Michal Manas

Re: question about extracting images

hey,
you can always increase the resolution/zooming and then extract the image. what is the highest possible resolution in vector graphics is, however, a question ;)

translation update for german

Hi,

in the last days I installed version 0.4.1 and had a look at the
GUI-Translation. I saw that there are some strings not translated.
I'm willing to do the translation of this strings too.

I think I need for this translation a special file out of the cvs. I don't
know the correct name (and folder) of this file yet. I hope someone could
give me the right direction.
If I should continue with the translation (yet and in the future), it would be
a good idea to have access to the project cvs.

Regards,
Andreas

German localization is located at: src/gui/lang/pdfedit_de.ts

You can check-out this single file by:
cvs -z3
-d:pserver:anonymous@...:/cvsroot/pdfedit
co pdfedit/src/gui/lang/pdfedit_de.ts

Just search for messages with <translation type="unfinished">

Localization files don't change too much, so I would start with patch
based updates in the beginning. If it turns out as awkward, we can think
about CVS access.
You can register to the pdfedit-devel mailing list at
https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/pdfedit-devel (or ask for posting
permitting if you don't want to receive whole mailing list traffic -
just send me an email) and post the patch there.

Thanks and best regards

feature suggestion

Hello,

First off, thanks and a big bravo for this great program, díky! I
joined this list to make a feature suggestion. Not being a
programmer, I have no idea how difficult my request would be to
implement. I apologize beforehand if it is too far out.

I belong to the rare species of translators using linux. Often I
receiva pdf's as source documents. In these cases I usually convert
the pdf to txt, and send it to the customer as a warning how my final
translation would look like. You can imagine their joy.

Pdfedit has an extract text function. How difficult would it be to
export the text to an xml file, allow it to be replaced by a
translation and inserted back to its correct place? I don't know any
program which is able to do this, not even on other platforms. It is
true, that some CAT (computer aided translation) tools are able to
work with the formats of the graphic software used to create pdfs,
but most of the companies don't have the 'source' documents. Anyway,
I believe this function would be a real hit amongst translators.

Best regards

Martin

Re: feature suggestion

Hey guys,

I can imagine that it would be a hit :) but it is not possible because of how pdf is working :(

Maybe something very simple could be done, but the main problem is that we do NOT deal with the typesetting
itself - where a line break should be, a page break etc - and unfortunately this is NOT automatic in pdf files.

cheers,
jozo

Hello,

Maybe it's a coincidence, but I'm also one of those not-so-common translators using Linux and have exactly
the same problem. I've tried the feature "Convert to xml", which is great because then you can translate
the XML files easily. But I don't really know how to convert it back to PDF, is there any application,
command line or GUI, to convert xmlpdf to the original format?

Thanks!

Which version of boost do you have?

There is not much I can read from this error message (could you provide
some compiler error messages)?

Re: feature suggestion

You'll see what we mean if you examine the pdf document in the pdfedit
gui first. You will often find that one line of text will contain two
or more text objects. As your translations would take up more or less
space in the document, you would end up with overtyped text, or ugly
gaps. (Yes, its a mess, blame adobe.)
Not to mention that the line justification would be messed up as well.

You will have to keep requesting that your clients send you the
original Word, Publisher or OpenOffice (we wish) document. Or extract
the graphics from the PDF and try to re-create that document - for an
extra fee, or course.

Technically it won't be easy, as the original text had some formatting
(which could be quite complex when LaTeX or some similar typesetting
software is used) and if we replace the text with another one, we'll have
to reformat it. Currently we have feature that replaces text - you select
text, and in the editbox that appears you type new text and it replaces the
original text, but any formatting is lost (you get one line of text) and of
course, if the new text is longer it can overflow over something to the
right of the text or it can go even out of the page ...

So with current pdfedit you can do it line-by-line.

I think the best we can do is to add support for some very elementary
formatting (break the text at word boundary once it crosses defined border)
