no hablar espagnol

Dear Nano,

When I asked my administrator about the whereabouts of the text editor he
told me about nano.

I went to the download page and clicked the latest version, but received
the message "page not found". So I went to the older versions and
downloaded nano-2.08.tar.gz. No problem on my LINUX machine, but
everything is in Spanish. French would be fine, but not Spanish. Is there
and English or French version available.

Re: no hablar espagnol

Hello Roger,

Nano actually defaults to English.  If you (or your systems administrator or a system preference) has set your LANG or LC_ALL environment variables to something esle that would cause nano to load the alternate language support.  I would try running "echo $LANG" and "echo $LC_ALL" from the command line where you run nano to see what values are set there.  Your shell's man page should have more information about this.

Re: Open nano by doble-click. Is it possible?

Yes, nano does not provide the terminal window for editing.  This is provided by an x terminal program like xterm, or the DOS emulator in modern Windows OSes.  If you're referring to something like firefox, you can cconfigure nano to edit files by setting the application to something like:
xterm -e "nano %s" but this varies by whatever you're trying to get to invoke nano.  I hope this helps.

I've been told it is not possible for programs based on xterm /
console (nano, joe) to open just by clicking on the 'object'
file, as we do with 'graphic-compliant' editors like Vim or
Emacs. Is this true?

How to quit nano

Dear nano help,

I went to:

http://www.nano-editor.org/docs.php

and could not find out how to quit nano. I executed the command:

nano hosts

and want to quit or exit without screwing up the hosts file. I did not
make a copy of the file before executing nano.

There is nothing at all in online manual:
http://www.nano-editor.org/dist/v2.1/nano.html
nor the ManPage:
http://www.nano-editor.org/dist/v2.1/nano.1.html
nor Nanorc man page:
http://www.nano-editor.org/dist/v2.1/nanorc.5.html

I know I am an R-Tard but could you please clearly and unambiguously
indicate how to exit nano without modifying the file. Please also
indicate how to exit and save the changes.

Do I press and hold the key with the Apple logo and cloverleaf symbol
on it and then lowercase "x"? or do I use the "ctrl" key and "x" or
"ctrl"-"shift"-"x" or ??

Thanks in advance!

Re: How to quit nano

The default exit sequence in nano control-x. If nano's keys have been
rebound via the .nanorc or you changed your keyboard mapping then I
cannot help, but the default is control-x. If you have modified the
file it will ask you when you exit whether you wish to save those
changes.

Have a nice day and thank you for using nano.
