Spellcheck Doesn't Remember

When I add words to the spell check they aren't remembered. Also even
though I have US English checked it gives me British spellings like
colour instead of color. If I can at least correct the first problem I
can add the correct US English spelling. Abiword 2.8.1, OS is
PClinuxOS.

Help file: Part of the program?

Is it just for simplicity that the help files aren't embedded in the
program, but have been held as separate HTML files?

Abiword Columns & Help Files

1) Is the abiword help file available for download ?
2) Is it possible to construct a two column document which runs for several pages (ie a two independent
columns which continue over page boundries)?

Re: Abiword Columns & Help Files

HI Edward,

One you set a section to have two columns all pages within that
section will have two columns. So after you finish the first page the
next page will take the text.

The text flows from the bottom of one column into the top of the next.

If instead want two independent threads of text so at the bottom on
the page it flows onto the next page in the same column I suggest you
create a two column table.

Turn off the borders of the table using the format table dialog after
you've finished creating your document. (Leaving the borders in place
makes it easy to jump between the two columns.

Cheers

No bullets in lists

Hi,

I'm using AbiWord with Linux and in Linux several Windows True Type Fonts.
All Fonts work well, except Symbol.

The bullet character (coming from Symbol font) in lists isn't a bullet (0xb7,
U+2022 or U+2219), but the 'infinity' character which looks very strange.

While all fonts look OK in the "Insert Symbol" font table, only a few
characters show up for the Symbol font. Most entries are boxes with a hex
code in them.

Why is this? What is different with Symbol (comparing the the other fonts)?

Can anyone help or explain what to do to get proper bullets?

Another problem with lists: bullet and numbering characters all have a grey
background and I cannot change the font for bullets in the "Format -> Bullets
and Numbering" dialog. Is this as it is supposed to be?

Re: No bullets in lists

Hi Ingo,

What distribution do you use? Have you checked whether Standard
Symbols Type 1 font is installed for your distribution?

My guess is that is it missing and the problems you describe will be
fixed once it is installed.

Cheers

Re: No bullets in lists

I experienced this problem on Ubuntu 9.10 using packages from the
AbiWord-Stable PPA.  From what Martin said, it sounds like these
packages are missing a dependency.  Any idea what the font package
might be named?

I ended up reverting back to 2.6 to get the functionality I needed.

None. Everything compiled from scratch by myself.

No Type 1 fonts, only True Type.

I removed symbol.ttf and installed Type 1 URW Standard Symbols L instead.
Now, all symbol characters are screwed up. They are all displayed as little
square boxes.

Unfortunately no.

Because all other True Type fonts work well, I can't understand why Symbol
makes such problems.

Re: No bullets in lists

Hi Ingo,

Everything to do with bullet lists works fine on my Fedora 12 version
of abiword-2.8.4 so my next guess is somehow your fontconfig is not
correctly configured.

Good Luck!
