I need help manipulating simple data as follows

Hello I have AbiWord 2.6.4. and need a simple tutorial on how to import a
list of
stocks (unfortunately with some unneeded info attached) that I copied from
the internet
and pasted into a file as a Wordpad Text and/or RichText formatvinformation

I then will need to remove unneeded information, put the remaining useful
data (Stock Symbols)
in a column/row format (a table?), then add my own delimeters (mostly
BRACKETS and AND/OR
CONDITIONAL DELIMETERS) before and after the useful Stock Symbol Data.

I then may need to SORT the Stock Symbol data and paste it into my Scan
Program.

So, basically in need to clean up Cut/Pasted Stock Symbol info, tidy it up
with my
delimiters, sort it if possible and insert it (as text, not RTF) into a Scan
Program.

Any guidance is greatly appreciated.........Follows is a sample of the Raw
Data:

% Price Change, Symbol, Name
2.45% , LLTC , LINEAR TECH
5.93% , BBY , BEST BUY
1.01% , JCP , JC PENNEY
2.60% , ZMH , ZIMMER HLDGS
2.16% , ITT , ITT INDS

Re: I need help manipulating simple data as follows

Sounds like an ideal use for a spreadsheet program. Try Gnumeric or
OpenOffice Calc on for size.

Import it into AbiWord and save a text. Then load the file as a "Comma
Seperated Value File (CSV)". Do your cleanup in the spreadsheet
program.

Dom

Alternate Font Source

I've checked out the plugin directory and did some cursory searching on
the AbiWord website, but I cannot find any information in regard to
specifying an alternate font directory to be used in addition to
C:\WINDOWS\Fonts

That way I don't have to actually 'install' those fonts to use them (I
have over 10,000).

TIA for the help!

abw file format compatibility between abiword 2.4, 2.6 and 2.8

Hi,

I'm currently using Abiword 2.4 as a "print server" on a Linux server, the
documents are created with Abiword 2.4 on Windows.
I'm planning to replace Abiword 2.4 by newer version on Windows (Abiword 2.6 or
2.8).

Can Abiword v2.4 open (and print) all the abw files created by Abiword 2.6/2.8 ?
If the abw file format is not 100% compatible, what are the unsupported features
?

Thanks

Mehmet YASAR

Abi-word - latest version.

Hi folks,

How stable is latest version (I'm using 2.6.8) which is fine but would be
better if Grammar checker worked! I interchange with OOo so use .ODT file
format. Why use Abi? Faster to open than OOo!

Does Abiword require MSWord to be installed on the system?

I have a "search and replay a list of phrases" working on MS Word. While
it works, I can't use MS Office (Word/ Excel) for some reasons. If I
open a file this software is running, or if I do any single change in
any Word file that was already open, that software stops working and
doesn't replace in that session any more.

It is a long process, often taking 2-4 hours while that software works
on a file and I couldn't afford not to be able to work for so long.

So, I needed a software in which I could still work in MS Word files
while that software works on .doc files.

Then, I searched and found Abiword. I have installed it, though not used
it till now.

I want to know whether Abiword would work absolutely independently of MS
Work, whether MS Word is installed or not in the system, so that my that
software doesn't get any signal from Abiword that I have opened/ changed
any file in Abiword, on which that software is still working.

Thanks.

I would say that Abiword is lighter in the best way. The focus on core
functions is the big selling point - plus the simple point that it is a
word processor which doesn't include spreadsheets, presentation
applications and other things you get with the office suites.
I like thinking of myself as fairly productive with text, and Abiword does
the trick, putting out PDFs as it should. I haven't used it much with
OpenDocument, though.
I haven't encountered crashes since I started using it, and that is quite
some years ago now.

Cheers,
Morten

AbiWord does not need MS Word in any way at all.

Re: Alternate Font Source

AbiWord can't do that. As far as I know, you're the first to ask for it :)

Re: abw file format compatibility between abiword 2.4, 2.6 and 2.8

Hi Mehmet,

The file is forward-compatible, but we don't guarantee
backwards-compatibility. Some files created by 2.6/2.8 would probably
refuse to load in 2.4.

I don't know how your "print server" works, but AbiWord 2.8 (due out
in about 1-2 weeks) does a much better job printing than 2.4 did.

Cheers,
Dom
