PR> Why is this article: PR> http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.comp.version-control.subversion.announce/243 PR> missing in the web interface: PR> http://news.gmane.org/gmane.comp.version-control.subversion.announce Because the web interface can't deal with crosspostings like I also keep saying over and over here with no attention from management.

Hello, When I'm trying to connect to snews.gmane.org, Thunderbird closes the connection and displays 'snews.gmane.org received a message with incorrect Message Authentication Code. [...]'. Hello! Since I personally find the encryption of email addresses quite annoying, it bothers me that it's enabled by default on <http://gmane.org/subscribe.php>. So when I handle the subscription requests I don't know if the list admin or subscriber really wants encryption or just forgot to unset it on the subscription page. I think it should be unset by default and only be used when really wanted. Sebastian

On a related issue, I suggest to apply similar "valid group name" heuristics to the subscription page as the ones being used in gmane.el. While I understand that many people don't know which list software is used, all should be able to suggest a quite good group name that needs to be modified only slightly, if at all. While there are certainly times I'd prefer unencrypted email in the groups I use that encrypt it, IMO if gmane makes that the default, it's likely to attract abuse... and ultimately damage gmane's reputation. Additionally, it'd be much easier for a list admin to decide they'd rather not be on gmane. The existing default makes it MUCH harder to use the "gmane's leaking addresses to the spammers" excuse. IOW, while having the unencrypted email addresses is nice, I'd a whole lot have the lists available on gmane with encrypted addresses, then not available, and I believe if the default changes, it'll ultimately cause rather more list admins to say "No, gmane may not carry my list", regardless. I don't want that to happen, so I in turn prefer the default to stay at encrypted addresses. -- -- Duncan - List replies preferred. No HTML msgs. And I'm often interested in lists where discussing mail and news headers is the topic. IMO lists not available on GMaNe are by definition irrelevantFrank
