Restarted now...

Improvement on e-mail encryption

Is there anyway that we could set something up where a user can add a
known e-mail address or domain to the approved sender's list without
undergoing a challenge-response? I think that it would be useful for
sending a business your e-mail address when they reply back with a
no-reply e-mail address (so they can't, or an automated response. A
user could test them on dummy e-mail address then add the received
address to his/her Gmane authorized senders list. I've gotten spam by
giving what I thought were legitimate business a dummy fowarding
address, so I think this could be a good thing. If they do give out the
e-mail address to an unknown party then they have to undergo the
challenge response, and thus the real e-mail address is still protected
from spam. What do you think?

Nope. To do that, you'll have to run TMDA yourself.

For the record, this empty e-mail reply turned out to be a bug that
was only manifest when trying to subscribe to a "moderated" group. At
least as of today, the bug is fixed.

Note that one still cannot subscribe to a moderated group through
e-mail. Attempting to do so elicits a reply message directing the
would-be subscriber to a Web form. I still see /that/ restriction as a
bug, but at least they fixed the empty reply message described above.

Here's a sample reply, edited appropriately:

*.dip0.t-ipconnect.de denied access to Gmane

I've now denied *.dip0.t-ipconnect.de (which is one of the largest
ISPs in Germany) access to the Gmane news server, since somebody there
is apparently leaking Gmane control messages onto Usenet.

The paths are typically:

Path: shelby.stanford.edu!newsfeed.stanford.edu!headwall.stanford.edu!colo.khms.westfalen.de!news.khms.westfalen.de!127.0.0.1!NNTP-from-news.gmane.org!news.gmane.org!bounce-back

So they seem to be injecting stuff at news.khms.westfalen.de, and
I've been unable to contact anybody there.

And I'm tired of getting questions from conscientious news admins who
wonder what all these control messages are about.

Sorry, Germany.

(If somebody else is able to rectify this situation, I'll remove the
ban, of course.)

T-Com + resellers excl. T-Online (*.dip.t-dialin.net)

You could propose headwall.stanford.edu to complaining
admins. It's not your fault if a GMaNe user starts an
unauthorized gateway or (more likely) screws up.

And it's most definitely not the fault of the millions
of T-Com users. If this one idiot uses a call by call
account he could use almost any ISP (AOL, GMX, Arcor,
etc.) Probably it's a DSL user unable to switch his
ISP within seconds, but that's not guaranteed.

No, but it worked. :-) The person in question got in touch with me,
and I've now removed the ban.

Will the gmane spam reporting links be affected? (appearently not,
because I haven't seen any storm of new articles in the unhandled
reported news group (but there hasn't been any handling for quite a
while, either))

Hu, now I hope that person also informed <at> westfalen.de

In FidoNet a "formal policy complaint" based on hearsay
as I tried it here could have cost me my node number ;->
