gmane.mail.spam.dspam.user is non-public

My post vanished until I subscribed to the list and reposted, at which
point it went through in under a minute.

Could Lars (or someone) mark the group as non-public?

The list runs on Majordomo 1.94.5, which doesn't seem to understand the
"set" command which I think Majordomo 2 does.

It'd be handy if post.php gave some hints for how to subscribe without
getting mail to the various list managers. Or is this information
elsewhere on gmane? I couldn't find it (either by random clicking or
with Google).

Cheers,

gmane.network.openvpn.user disappearance from NNTP?

I've recently ceased to be able to access one of the lists I follow closely via
the NNTP interface:

Sun, 31 Oct 2004 20:28:20 - Unable to set group "gmane.network.openvpn.user
": 411 No such group gmane.network.openvpn.user

I note that this group is still available via the HTTP interface. Any comments
as to what might have happened?

Looks like you have been blocked.

Is your IP in <http://gmane.org/denied.php>?

Yup, I'm in *.customer.corenap.com. (A static IP, incidentally, so the
wildcard shouldn't have been necessary, if it was in fact my own usage
that triggered the block).

Odd, since I really _am_ using a newsreader, not any address
harvesting or like software. (Come to think of it, though, the issue
started when I told pan to download all headers on
gmane.linux.suse.general so I could locally search the message
subjects -- that certainly could be taken as antisocial enough
behaviour).

Ok, done.

Well, exposing the list address on the web interface makes me a bit
worried. If it's a non-public group, the auth mail will say how to
subscribe to the list, though.

I've now removed that entry.

Design competition

It's about time to get serious with the blog CSS, so I thought I'd
leave it up to all y'all.

Here's how to design Gmane:

1) First download the template CSS that has all the classes that are
   used:

   <URL: http://gmane.org/download_css.php>

2) Put it on your own web server somewhere.

3) Paste the URL of your CSS into the box that says "Paste the URL of
   your CSS below"

4) Play around with the design until it's beautiful and stuff.
You may add colors, background images, move stuff around, whatever.

5) Mail me the URLs of your design, and I'll add it to the list of
CSS files in the "Design" box, and people can have a look at them.

6) The winner will... er... I don't know. Will be happy?

And today they're back to 20K hits, so I guess they've fixed whatever
glitch they had in their spidering software.

I was thinking of generic instructions for each mailing list manager -
something like:

Here's some hints for how to set your subscription to not receive
messages for the list. You need to know what list software is being
used (see the "Type" field in the Gmane information page for the
  group).

  Mailman

Go to the Mailman list information page for the list, click on
the "Unsubscribe or edit options" button (near the bottom).
Follow the log in instructions, then look for the "Mail delivery"
option and set it to "Disabled". Then click the "Submit My Changes"
  button.

  Majordomo 1.x

  Not possible.

  [etc]

Oops... Just wanted to suggest one thing for the possible design...

comments.gmane.org looks nice IMHO, with the indentation as it's now. However,
just one point more:

in blog conventions (or so, if they are any), one expects that in a thread or
main message followed by its comments, the first title has a bigger type than
the comments following. In blog.gmane.org all subject lines are rendered
equal... But in comments.gmane.org perhaps the first thread initial subject
deserves another class, h2, css div or whatever to distinguish it.

Just a suggestion.
