New gmane.conf directive

You can now set:

  x-no-archive=ignore

to have the mail-to-news script ignore the X-No-Archive header.
(I.e., don't expire the message after 14 days, anyway.) This is for
mailing lists that have X-No-Archive set on all messages, but where
the list admin wants Gmane to store the messages forever, anyway.

(I just had such a request.)

Yeah, I agree.

I've now made this change, and I've also mentioned that groups can be
made read-only.

That sounds like a phrase SpamAssassin would use to mark the message
as "spam". :-)

Yeah; it only works for the groups that are backed by mailing lists.
gmane.discuss.subscribe is just a newsgroup...

I'll see what I can do.

Removing mailinglist reminders from gmane.config?

It's that time of month again, the mailing list reminders. I believe
gmane.config has had several hundreds of them already today. It would
be nice if these were moved to, say, gmane.config.reminders.

I've now changed the script to post them to gmane.config.discarded.

OK, that should mentioned on http://gmane.org/find.php .

I was just using some hacked copy I saw posted here recently. Where
can I download the official version? I suppose using that program is
mainly to help the next guy not run into spam, whereas it is too late
to help me as I already downloaded that spam.

Does that mean that the spammer must have posted the message by using
NNTP? Does that mean that some spammers are trying to get spam posted
that way? I wonder how they found gmane? Do they have some tool that
probes port 119 on random IP numbers to see if reachable machines have
an NNTP server running?

When/if you are ready to try again, ping me for a new all.bz2 file,
since new messages have arrived since I generated the last one.
