If you call yourself a "GNU" site and take advantage of the reputation
of the GNU project, I would say that as a matter of courtesy (at least!)
you should ask the GNU folks for their blessing.

(Put another way, there are no "unofficial" GNU projects...everything
from GNOME to gcc has the approval of the FSF, as far as I know.[*])

More positively, by being an official GNU project, people will know that
the GNU in your name really means something---you gain a greater trust
among the Free-Software/Open-Source communities.

Cordially,

[*] There is gnuplot, but its own authors stress that it is "gnuplot"
and not "GNUplot", and the name is a historical accident (it was started
in 1986, with little or no awareness of GNU).

Another ReiserFS breakdown

ciao.gmane.org had another ReiserFS-related breakdown this morning,
so I took the opportunity to move ciao to xfs instead. Let's hope
that's a bit less of a disaster area than ReiserFS is...

Uh, yeah.

Not really; no.

The main reason for the software not being available is that it's not
in a very pretty state. But I've now added a "Download" menu entry
to the web site that has a link to a checked-out version of the CVS
repository. It's not for the faint of heart, though.
There's... Perl and stuff in there.

Injecting mail archives

As the first test subject of my simple split-up-an-mbox-archive-
and-inject-it-into-Gmane, gmane.technology.erps underwent the
treatment today. It was a new group, so it was a convenient test
subject. Seems to be doing OK, although it seems like it's going to
run for quite a while...

Thanks for making the code downloadable (and under the GPL)! It's very
reassuring to see a commitment to free software, even (especially!) at
an early stage, to know in what direction you are heading.

Let me urge you again to send a message to gnu <at> gnu.org to volunteer to
be a part of the GNU project---it's only fair, if you want to use the
GNU name. Since Gmane is free software, I imagine they'll happily say
"yes" and there will be little more to it.

(Note that, as an official GNU project, you'll also be able to promote
yourself on their mailing lists and web site, use facilities like their
bug-tracking system, and they may even be able to arrange things like
server space if you need it in the future.)

Steven G. Johnson

Does that mean that Lars actually knows where he is heading with this
thing...? :-)

What happens with old article numbers?
