Re: [hpv] India's gift to green drive: Bicycle @ 40kmph

Little semantics here ... leg muscles can develop a maximum power rating, call it X watts.

A sprinter who weighs in at 100-kg will have more of this than a 60-kg climber.

The system that delivers power can't deliver more than X watts.

Shorter cranks may deliver more power than longer ones, but neither delivers more than X watts.

But didn't Greenspeed's results show that you got more power from shorter cranks?

HPV week in Allegre, July 12th-20th 2008, France

Hello everybody,
We would like to inform you that we are organizing an HPV touring event in Allegre, Haute-Loire, France from Saturday 12h to Sunday 20th of July, 2008. This year will be the 7th edition and there will still be new things to see and new scenic roads to ride.

The event is free. People arrive and leave when they want, choose the camp site or stay at the hostel or B&B, take part to the small or long tour, ride alone, go walking or watch TV if they don't feel like doing anything.
TOURS
- Small tours length around 50 km (30 miles)
- Long tours are around 80-120 km (50-75 miles)
- we generally go for a gastronomic tour in the week.

BUILDER'S CORNER
As there are quite a few people interested in building they own HPV, we have a builder's corner settled in a garage at the Chateauneuf's gite (1.5 km from Allegre). Sometimes, after a good night of work, we see new machines riding in the tours !

PICTURES
Here are a few pictures taken in Allegre's area:
http://www.ihpva.org/Chapters/france/echanges/allegre_pictures.htm
Eating the stange "living" cheese is not compulsory to be the one of us (at least, you are allowed to remove the outside!).

ACCOMODATION
Here are the accomodation and facilities in Allegre. There is no need to register for the camp site.
http://www.ihpva.org/Chapters/france/rando/allegre/allegre_gb.htm
You can also contact us if you need help or details.

INFORMATION
This year, the eldest France-HPV member, Lucien Manicacci, 81 year old, will be partiicpating in the small tours.
Most of the time, we are some 40 to 60 people with recumbents, tandems, foldables, mountain bikes... In 2006, with the venue of the World championships, we were up to 120 people touring at the same time.

We are looking forward to riding with you.

Best Regards,
Jean-Charles Gosselin

First, this is a worldwide forum encompassing many issues, including the exchange of images on a wide
assortment of browsers. Second, you seem to be a bit unclear on what constitutes "standard".

fairing

'm trying to make a fairing for my recumbent, you can see pics of it at www.steppebysteppe.com.au

i was planning on having it fully enclosed and made of fabric, but highly adaptable to the weather. Thus it is basically like a tent (aerodynamically shaped from all angle for wind deflection), actually using multiple tent poles as its skeleton. Its panels would all be able to be rolled/zipped up, thus on a hot day we can roll more panels up, and on a cold day we can be fully enclosed(the front portion will be see through like a windscreen).

I if i design the skelton for it and mount it to my frame(basically just eyelets/brazons) to mount custom sized tent poles, is there anywhere i can get the fabric(be great to have a waterproof breathable one!) made, and more importantly is there anyone who will sew it(cut it to size, measure the fabric needed from my CAD design etc)? or will it have to be a dodgy home job?

thanks

Icebike race Brantford Is ON

Hi everyone!

My ISP has been having problems and many of my emails have gone a stray, so if you haven't received my last posting, the H.P.T.A. Ice Bike race is a go!

With a kind donation from a sponsor to pay for the ice time, we are able to host this years Ice Bike race.  This donation also allows us to keep the entrance fee the same as last year, at $35.00. This price includes the club's membership fee, and insurance coverage. (The Ontario Cycling Association (O.C.A.)  agreement will not allow the insurance to cover non-members, and you cannot race without insurance coverage. ) This membership allows you to enter and attend all H.P.T.A. events, and events and races hosted by the O.C.A.(Additional entrance fees may be applied to each event, or race.)  Yes, membership has its benefits!

The race is on February 3, from 1:30 p.m., to 4:30 p.m., At the Wayne Gretzky Sports Centre in Brantford. That is 3 hours of ice time! So, come one, come all, and support the sixth annual H.P.T.A. Ice Bike race! Bring all the friends and family you can, too! We like to have an audience, and we will need volunteers for the event, to help with the race timing and lap counting.

More details on the race events and directions to the Centre, can be found on our website: www.hptabrant.ca. Thank you all for your responding to our previous emails, informing us of your intensions to attend or not. The information feed back, was very helpful to us. If you have any questions, just send them to me, or the H.P.T.A. and we will answer them as soon as possible!

Sincerely,

PLEASE EXPECT DISRUPTIONS on these mailing list

HEY EVERYONE!! How's it going?

Several people have mentioned that the IHPVA.org mailing list archives
are messed up. I know this and I AM NOT FIXING THEM. :-)
Well ACTUALLY I will but in a round about way.

Once a year or so I jump in here and say running IHPVA.org is my HOBBY so
that I don't feel so guilty about it not being run flawlessly.

The current Internet service provider lost ANOTHER hard drive about 2 weeks
ago and the server that IHPVA lives on is still limping. NO I don't need money
but thanks for asking. TIME would help but money would not help
since I would only spend it on more GPS equipment and go hiking to test it!
If I gave the money to the ISP they would spend it on donuts or golf
clubs or ham radio equipment-- It would not go into better server
equipment... let's not talk about it!

Keeping all this IHPVA.org stuff going at the moment is very taxing for me.
I have about 10 minutes a week to devote to it right now.

The guy who does their system backups there and generally keeps all
the systems online is well... let's just say it's NOT his day job and
his heart is not in it. (That guy is, of course, me)

We currently have a bad Internet connection and unreliable equipment
but it's FREE!! Great huh? The only ADVANTAGE is that hosting is "FREE" there
because I keep things running. (They indeed pay me something but it's
NOT worth what I get.) HOWEVER since I started doing IHPVA.org hosting
costs have dropped from many $100's per month to $6/month so it is no
longer worth keeping up this
barter arrangement. I want OUT! OUT NOW!!!

WHAT THIS MEANS

This means IHPVA.ORG is MOVING!!! Yes. YES! FINALLY...

I am moving it to another service provider. For $6 / month someone
ELSE can manage the network headaches and the backups etc etc etc...
then I have
10 minutes a week MORE to spend on the site.

ANTICIPATE DISRUPTIONS.

I decided that moving the site QUICKLY rather than slowly and
carefully would help keep me sane. (Some believe this is a futile)

I don't have a really good way to move the SUBSCRIBER lists.
SO -- when the move happens, you will get notifications that you have
been subscribed to whatever lists you're already on. Just like when
you originally subscribed. Because it will be a new list on a new
server.

SETTINGS like "digest", "no mail", etc will be LOST and you will have to connect
to the new web page and reset them, I AM SORRY but this is my HOBBY.
Did I mention that?

I will ATTEMPT to sort out the problems with the mailing list archives
AFTER things have moved. But I can't make any guarantees. I won't have
as much control of the new server (I WANT it that way!) but I will do
what I can.

The new service provider is at "hostmonster.com" who have been doing a
decent job hosting other sites for me since June. Hopefully the
traffic for IHPVA.org
will not be a problem..

Two sites over there already are http://HuPI.org and
http://ravenproject.org are moved there already. (Pssssst I hear
that the Raven will fly again!!!)

The original HPV mailing list started out as "hpv <at> sonoma.edu" and
then moved to IHPVA.org over 10 years ago (long before there was a
"world wide web") It will continue to change from time to time but it will
continue to exist...

WHEN WILL THIS HAPPEN?

Geez I dunno - SOON. You will know it because there will be a disruption!
