The picture of the horn snuff box reminds me of one I bought new about 40 years ago.

It was a beautiful box. But it gave a most unpleasant smell to the snuff.

Since then, I've only used silver boxes.

Ted, yes it is hard to beat a silver box. It never taints the tobacco, is not porous and it keeps cool. No wonder
that it has always been the preferred material for snuff boxes through the age.

However, for an exotic look I do rather like animal horn.

I too love the whole thing about a good silver box but I do also have a liking for pewter. It seems such and
unlikely material for a good long lasting box yet it is very tactile and patinates beautifully. My first
pinch was from a horn box [offered by the boss] and this has given me a life long liking of a a good antiqued
beautifully patinated, cow horn box. Two materials which do not appeal to me are brass and
Papier-mâché. I am sure to some others they are the most beautiful of all. Mike

I agree with you about papier-mâché, although some can be very pretty. I don't like the dull patina of
pewter so much and don't always find that the hinges are sturdy. Brass is a wonderful sturdy metal but I
don't like the colour on a box much. It is all a matter of taste I suppose. Check out the snuff box albums here
for some wonderful snuff boxes from the past.

Round pewter boxes with separate lids are very good, because pewter being a soft metal, they make a good seal.

[ Snuff Box The Nasal Snuff Club] Re: Home Page Picture

I'm still using my German wooden box (see photos) as my day-to-day SP/Tom Buck container, but have an old
bakelite hinged box for the rare occasions I take menthol or more unique flavoured snuffs out of the house.
Not especially keen to try keeping anything other than my daily snuff in the wooden box as I'm guessing
it'll absorb the stronger scents of medicated or floral snuffs - has anyone got any experience of this?

Would still love to have a silver box for special occasions!

I have two silver boxes, usually with poschl snuff. It holds well but if I don't use it, it gets all tarnished. Maybe I need to keep it in a ziplock or little bag etc.
