Congratulations to Caitlyn Dobbs - The Secret Garden

REVIEW: The Secret Garden

Well, last night young 9 year-old Caitlyn Dobbs stole the show as the star of the Champaign-Urbana Theatre Company production "The Secret Garden."  This young performer, in her 13th show, as Mary Lennox, can sing well, act well, and speak in an English aristocratic accent!  It was a delight to be in the third row center to see this charming young person highlight this most wonderfully performed play!  I will be looking forward to seeing Caitlyn star in "Annie" sometime in the future!  Future directors should think about casting her in this role!

Young Ethan Berl also sang well and acted the part of the invalid 10 year old boy, Colin Craven.  You may remember Ethan's last production when he flew across the Virginia stage as John in Peter Pan.  Together, Caitlyn and Ethan made the story most enjoyable to watch.

Child actors alone do not a play make.  Adults Felipe M. L. Gasper and David Barkley as the brothers Archibald Craven and Dr. Neville Craven sang with such depth and emotion that you had to be there to witness these fine actors perform.  Their duet, "Lily's Eyes" in Act I was most praiseworthy -- very powerful.  Felipe's solos, "A Bit of Earth," "Race You to the Top of the Morning," and "Where in the World" speak well of his fine singing voice and his training at U of I School of Music.  You will remember Felipe as the dastardly Captain Hook in Peter Pan.  Watch out for that crocodile, Hook!  David's solo "Disappear" was well sung.  David last directed Big River on this very stage less than seven months ago.

Melanie Carter sang in operatic voice and was a joy to hear.  Her solo, "Come to my Garden" caused tears to begin.  She was most beautiful in her bright white 19th Century dress which glowed as she performed as the Ghost-Spirit of Archibald's too-soon departed wife.  Melaniei holds a Master of Music degree from the U of I.  You know she earned high grades!  Sadly, Melanie will be seeking stage performances in Chicagoland when she moves to there soon.  CU's loss is Chicago's gain!

What can I say about Michael Steen as Dickon?  He is Champaign-Urbana's original leprechaun with a bit of the brogue.  His solo, "Winter's on the Wing" was well performed.  Last seen in the Station Theatre's "She Loves Me" opposite the ever-enchanting Emily Coffin a few months back, Michael was leading man as Tony in West Side Story and Danny Zuko in Grease.  This is Michael's second production of The Secret Garden.  Besides all this, Michael did the hairstyling and makeup for the cast!

Ragen E. Sanner has a bit of the brogue herself!  She played a pivotal role as Mary Lennox's maid, Martha.  Mary's solos, "A Fine White Horse" and "Hold On" were well done.  Ragen has found a home at CTCU.

Whitney Havice and Andrew Y. Rubia were most eye-catching as Ayah and Fakir playing the roles of Indian Ghosts.  Whitney is a trooper for CUTC performing in her 13th show!  I saw you, Tiger Lily, in Peter Pan and as Kit-Kat Club girl in Cabaret at Parkland.  We last saw Andrew in multiple roles in The Laramie Project.

Jason Cerezo's singing as Major Holmes was most praiseworthy.  You have been absent from CUTC too long.  Welcome back.

Andy Blacker was last cast to be abused in his role in The Road to Nirvana.  This time, as Lt. Shaw, he was treated with more respect!  Well, you were a Ghost at least!

Good to see Jim Dieker back on the stage as Major Shelley.  This makes CUTC number 8!

Jeffrey A. Chandler, Debbie Richardson, Lorraine Selander, Jodi Prosser, Leonard Rumery, April M. Smith-Colon, Ryan Mulvaney, Margee Poole, Diane Pritchard, Dante Dobbs, Cody Hutchins, Cullyn Murphy, Chloe Schreiber, and Trevor Unzicker round out the cast as live performers, dreamers/ghosts, and children's chorus members.  All singing was well done.  Thanks for a great show.

Robert L. Smith's orchestra is to be commended for their fine musical renditions.  Well, done to all 15 performers!  Kudos also to Karen Dohme for her rehearsal accompaniment.

The set was outstanding!  Chris Harris, Marv Piwoni, Cindy Havice, Bernie Wolff, Douglas Pugh, Wendy Harris, and Bob Weber all take a bow!  The finale backdrop and lighting of the Secret Garden was most impressive.  Lily's Ghost Picture Come-Alive scene in young Colin's room (Come to my Garden) was well done!  The Picture Gallery was quite imaginative and gave the impression that the Ghosts were watching over little Mary Lennox at her uncle Archibald's estate.  Very creative usage or turnaround props!  I was worried that Dickon was going to fall as he leaped across the tops of the Secret Garden walls!  But, he's a leprechaun so he can't get hurt!

The choreography of Beth Ellis-Dickson deserves special mention.  The dances of the Ghosts and little Mary's wandering throughout the halls was most believable.

The costumes are right out of the 19th Century!  Great work Jeannine Silis.

It's not easy to speak in upper or lower class British English.  Thanks to Jill Zager for coaching the dialects that the performers had to master.

Producers Jeri Corso and Dave Kuhl all worked hard behind the scenes to bring you this wonderful play.  Thanks, producers.

Thanks John Stuff for directing such a delightful play.  Well, it's easier when you have such a fine cast talented players to work with.  Then, you can just sit back during rehearsals and be entertained while they work!

Oh!  What's the play about?  Go see it!  OK ... or as Roger Ebert warns us -- here comes the spoiler!  Young English girl in India -- all her parents and family friends die of Cholera -- she gets sent to live with her wealthy, detached, uncle back in England.  He's grieving for 10 years!  His son is ill or is he?  Misguided doctor and 2nd uncle makes things worse.  Mary and Colin are cousins.  Mary finds Colin hidden away in the estate house.  They discover the joys of his dead mother Lily's Secret Garden.  And, of course with the magic of the Secret Garden, the Spirits of the Dead, and some help from that "leprechaun," Dickon, young Colin can walk again and they all live happily ever after!

There are only 3 more performances. Tonight, Nov 7, and Saturday Nov 8 and Sunday Nov 9th.  You can buy a ticket at the box office -- just show up!  Or call the Virginia and have a ticket reservation at the Hold Box Office for when you arrive.  Don't miss this truly marvelous CUTC performance.  Young Caitlyn will delight you even if you are not amazed by the rest of the total production!  But, I can't see how you won't be truly amazed and delighted to see The Secret Garden.

Still reading?  Pick up the phone and call the Virginia right now!  Tonight, Friday and Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m.  Sunday matinee at 2:30 p.m.

ARTCO to present encore performance of The Crucible

We’re trying to do some instant publicity about this special encore performance.  Please read and pass on to anyone that you think might be interested.

ARTCo to present encore performance of “The Crucible”

TUSCOLA, IL (November 10, 2003) --  Sold-out shows for nearly every performance of “The Crucible” have led Actors Rural Theatre Company to schedule an encore show for Sunday, November 16, at 2:30 p.m. at The Fine Arts Center in Tuscola.

According to ARTCo board member Kim Higgins, attendance has been unexpectedly high for this Arthur Miller classic based on the Salem witch trials and due to the high demand for seats, some patrons had to be turned away.  The encore performance will enable those who were unable to attend an opportunity to see this popular play.

Due to limited seating and high demand, reserving seats early and in advance is highly recommended.  Reservations can be made by calling 253-6699.  Tickets are $10 for adults, $7 for senior citizens and $5 for students and children under 12.  The performance will be held at The Fine Arts Center in Tuscola, 211 E. Overton Street, Tuscola.

Set in Salem, Massachusetts, in 1692, The Crucible revolves around a group of young teen-aged girls who are caught in the woods dancing around a kettle by firelight where they are suspected to have been “conjuring.”  The town leaps to the conclusion that witchcraft is involved, setting off a chain of events that lead to one of the most unexplainable episodes of hysteria in American history.  Thrown into the mix are greedy preachers, major landowners seeking to increase their holdings, and a young woman infatuated with a married man and determined to get rid of his innocent wife.

Arthur Miller wrote the events and the subsequent trials where those who demanded their innocence were executed, those who would not name names were incarcerated and tortured, and those who admitted their guilt were immediately freed as a parable of the Congressional Communist witch hunts led by Senator Joe McCarthy in 1950's America.

First produced in 1953, at a time when America was convulsed by a new era of witch hunting, The Crucible brilliantly explores the threshold between individual guilt and mass hysteria, personal spite and collective evil.  It is a play that is not only relentlessly suspenseful and vastly moving but that compels viewers to fathom their hearts and consciences in ways that only the greatest theater ever can.

Directed by Lyn Leithliter, ARTCO’s production of The Crucible features actors from throughout the east-central Illinois area:

Hello, everyone. This is just a reminder, as the audition dates are rapidly
approaching. OPEN AUDITIONS will be held for a production of Steve Martin's
(yes, THAT Steve Martin!)PICASSO AT THE LAPIN AGILE on Saturday, Nov. 22 and
Sunday, Nov. 23 between the hours of one and five p.m. Auditions will be at
the Grissom Hall Theatre in Rantoul. To get to Grissom Hall Theatre from
Champaign/Urbana, go north on U.S. Rt. 45 to the third traffic light in Rantoul
(Borman -- look for the Minute Man missile) and turn right (the only way you
can turn). Continue on through the first stop sign (at Century Blvd.) and when
you get to the fork in the road (at the flagpole), bear right (Arends Blvd.).
Go straight at the first stop sign, and look for the circle drive and the blue
canopy on your immediate right. This is the entrance to Grissom Hall Theatre.

The production will be directed by James L. Seay, long time teacher, director,
actor, playwright and critic in Champaign and Champaign County. It will be
produced by The Rantoul Theatre Group, Jessica Holmes, President.

We will be needing a cast of seven men and four women. All are adult ages.
One man's part has a character age of 60+. There is also a part for an Elvis
impersonator. This may be either a man (actually, listed as one of the seven
male parts) but could also be done by a woman willing to impersonate Elvis.

Rehearsals will begin the first of December, with no rehearsals during the
Christmas or New Years holidays. Actual production dates are January 23, 24,
25, 30 & 31.

Final audition reminder

Hi, gang --

Just a last and final reminder -- auditions for Steve Martin's PICASSO AT THE
LAPIN AGILE will be this Saturday and Sunday, one to five p.m. each day, at the
Grissom Hall Theatre, 914 Arends Boulevard in Rantoul. To get there, go north
from C/U on Rt. 45 to the third traffic light in Rantoul (Borman Drive -- at
the Minuteman missile) and turn right (the only way you can turn). Continue on
Borman through the first stop sign (Century Blvd.) to the fork in the road (at
the flagpole), Bear right (you are now on Arends Blvd.). At the first stop
sign, go straight and look for the circle drive and blue canopy on your right.
(There is a stainless steel sign over the canopy reading "GRISSOM HALL") This
is the entrance to Grissom Hall Theatre.

Those auditioning will read from the script, so no prepared material is
needed. We will be casting seven men and four women. We are in particular
need of an Elvis impersonator, so if you know one, tell him to put on his blue
suede shoes and get down here.

The production will be directed by James L. Seay, a long-time Champaign County
teacher, director, actor, playwright, poet and critic. Rehearsals will begin
on December 1st. Actual production is January 23,24,25,30 & 31. There will be
no rehearsals over the Christmas and New Years holidays. We will rehearse
three times a week for about two hours per rehearsal, until production week,
when all bets are off.

Please spread the word. We are also in need of an experienced stage manager
and a run gang.
