My Rosy Webpages

Here are my webpages that I have scattered about like rose petals,
fearing to put them in one place lest they get lost, or stolen. But,
feeling safer, I now put them in one basket. Some are redundant, I
not wanting to give too much away, but, wanted them to be found in
key-word searches having the reader follow the links.

Pressed Roses, links many of these pages together.

Here are some key pages.

President: Royal Rosamond Press

The Scottish painter and illustrator John Duncan was born in Dundee
in 1866, and studied there at the School of Art. Duncan was
influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites, Celtic imagery, and symbolism. His
work included pictures depicting myth and legend, also Symbolist work
in a late Pre-Raphaelite manner.
He was to become a member of the Dundee Graphic Arts Association, and
in 1898-9 shared a studio with the young George Dutch Davidson whom
he greatly influenced.

From 1892 he was based in Edinburgh where he was closely associated
with Patrick Geddes, biologist, town planner and prophet of the
Celtic Revival. Geddes offered Duncan the post of Director of his new
art school and Duncan sought to express Geddes' ideas in a number of
mural projects, notably a series of six panels illustrating scenes
from Celtic history in the common room of University Hall in Ramsay
Lodge. He was also involved with Geddes' influential magazine, The
Evergreen. In 1899 he embarked on a tour of America with Geddes. In
1900 he lectured at the International Assembly of the Paris
Exposition, and the same year became Associate Professor of Art at
the Chicago University, holding the post for two years.
