Re: Who is in charge of your coworking space?

Stephanie

We're in the same boat here. Three of us funded our space and two of
us work here full time. My office for my business, DoingMedia LLC is
here. The other partner working in the space full time is also my
wife. She acts as a kind of concierge. Between us we've had some push
pull on how the space operates. I'm for "let everyone do as they will
in an adult manner". She is more in management mode; she spent a long
time as a retail store manager. That customer service background is
perfect for a coworking space but the "managing" part is not so hot.

We are still in the mode of having people asking us for permission.
So, when they ask I just tell them to go ahead, use your judgement,
play well with others, etc. The rules in the kitchen are if you make
it dirty then make it clean, if you rearrange it then rearrange it
back, etc.

But since my wife is more interested in running it like a business and
not a community our members DON'T step up to do things, caretake, etc.
because they don't have to. (My wife is great but she has said herself
that she may not be a good fit for a coworking space.)

We will soon have a member/regulars meeting to talk about how things
work and how things need to work.

I would suggest that you explicitly tell people to STOP asking you
permission to do things. Then if somebody does something out of bounds
you talk to them and start to set some norms. But now set the norm to
be wild, wild west. Sort of like keeping your blog wide open to
commenting and then adding moderation when the need arises.

Re: Hi!

 There's Converge in Union, NJ -- http://convergenj.com/

I'd love to share a co-working space with folks in the Morris county
area ... there's so many spaces for rent these days and many can be had
for very low sq ft prices. Maybe in 2011, I might try to set up a space ...

Re: Hi! (Launchpad Creatives in Woodbridge, NJ)

Hi Nicole,

I think I can be of assistance :-)  I actually work out of Launchpad Creatives, which is located in Woodbridge, NJ, at 97 Main Street.  Launchpad just opened its door in May of 2010.  At the moment, we've got two companies there, 20 Lemons, and Pinpoint Promotions & Marketing.  We've also got a monthly freelancer who does affiliate marketing via Facebook.

If you live close by, we'd definitely love to have you stop by and see the space!  I'm looking forward to hearing from you.

Kind Regards,

Bilingual Social Media

Hey,

My name is Birthe and I'm in a team of two people running a Coworking-Space called Yorck52 in Berlin Germany since the beginning of June.

Many of your mails have been helpful already in the past three months and now I have a specific question I'd like your advice on:

We have been using Twitter as well as facebook and set up a website before our opening festivities. However all of these are only fed with content in German so far although many of our Café guests and most of the few Coworkers that joined our space till now happen to be englishspeaking Berliners.

How do you deal with using more than one language in your Social Media posts? Would setting up a second Twitter account e.g <at> yorck52english be a professional way of catering for Englishspeaking followers? What about facebook? Noone has complained (yet) about us posting in German but I'd like to find a way of Sharing our events and other news in English too.

I Look forward to reading about your ideas and experiences.

Best wishes from Berlin

Re: Bilingual Social Media

Hi,

From the poster side, for Station C. We mix and match as needed within
the same accounts, most of our members and people in town speak or at
least can get the gist of both languages and we figure out of towners
will skip the parts they don't understand.

From the reader side, for example I follow Betahaus, I just read the
english posts and scan the German ones to see if I can get an idea of
what it says and usually follow the links just in case. I don't mind.
