Forecasting coworking

For our spring semester architecture studio at UW-Milwaukee, which
focused on designing ways for Milwaukee to adapt to the challenges of
the new urban age, we looked at the exciting emergence of coworking
facilities across the U.S.

We discovered that architectural strategies can help coworking
facilities, but too often a low cash flow turns a coworking start-up
into a bare-bones DIY project. So we wrote a manual to help facility
owners, current coworkers, and those new to coworking get the most out
of their space. We discuss what to look for in selecting the location
of a new building and common problems of coworking facilities that
result from combining autonomy and social interaction.

In order to share our work and research with a greater audience, so we
made the manual available on Lulu (http://www.lulu.com/product/
paperback/forecasting-coworking-architectural-strategies-for-your-
coworking-space/10979195). We hope the book can help you in your
coworking endeavors!

Autonomous Collaboration Space

Hey everybody, especially the Berliners out there.

We at Open Design City - www.opendesigncity.de - an adventure in
collaboration <at> www.betahaus.de are exploring new forms of
collaboration in manufacturing, design and production. Building a new
culture and structure of working in our workspace at Betahaus.

Next week we are going supersized for one week only, at the www.dmy-festival.com
in Templehof airport.

More information can be found here
http://odc.betahaus.de/2010/05/30/dmy-maker-lab-a-four-day-festival-of-making-10-13-june-templehof/
and here http://www.od10beta.info/dmy-maker-lab/.

It will be chaotic, it will be dynamic. Things will be created from
this primordial soup of expertise, machines, and collective desire.
This event is open to all.

If you don't know what to make, we will provide inspiration. If you
don't know how to make, we will provide guidance.

If you know these things already then come and share your knowledge.

If you want to build something, come build it.

If you want to bring something, bring it.

If you want to share something share it.

Hope you can make it.

Re: Autonomous Collaboration Space

Wow, this sounds awesome, Jay!

It will be the opening week of our Coworking-Space and Vegan Organic
Café (http://yorck52.de) so I probably won't be able to spend much
time at Tempelhof airport for the festival. But I'm pretty sure I'll
come along at least once.

Best wishes from
Birthe

Grasshopper now has Canadian numbers too (an din fact there is a
Toronto launch party tonight and Jonathan is working from our space
today), and Camaraderie will be evaluating the service to see how well
it might work for our members.

Re: CSI - Shared Spaces for Social Innovation

Eli,

WOW!  Huge congratulations to all of you at CSI for developing such a nice array of information.  I'm pouring over the two pieces I downloaded this morning and am incredibly grateful for your willingness to share all that you do.  You're an inspiration to us at Office Nomads right now - we've only just started writing down our story and now have a seriously high bar to reach up to! ;)

Way to go and thank you for making such a fantastic contribution to the coworking community by sharing these pieces.

Best,
Susan

Re: Cubes&Crayons Silicon Valley location Ownership Opportunity.

Hi Susan,

Very delayed response...I've been swamped. I am selling Cubes&Crayons
Mountain View but not the brand. Just the location because I am just
too busy
with other things to give the space the attention it needs. It is
doing well and
we have more and more blending of just coworkers with our coworkers
with kids.

We were just in Redbook magazine and used it to launch our brand and
license software program.
The software was built in house and is a valuable reservation tool.
We might adapt for a broader audience
but that definitely remains to be seen.

We are working with people across the country to help them get their
own Cubes&Crayons
up in the meantime. The blog will stay ours, but look to see location
specific blogs starting.
We have about 20 potential licensees interested at the moment. It
will be
interesting times. Still hoping for a potential licensee in Seattle,
New York, Boston, and Philadelphia
among others, but those are definitely top on my list.

Will keep everyone posted as new Cubes&Crayons launch.
