Thanks, Felicity. I'm liking 2010 already. Read a few predictions that
peg this as the year coworking goes mainstream. Nice of them to notice
what we already know.

Best to you and Cubes&Crayons. Hope to see a few in Chicago before

Hi all,

I've been reading this group for some time, silently a little jealous of you all in your co-working spaces.

Here in Manchester, we've been trying to get something up and running in the city centre all the GeekUp[1] guys and gals could use. We have a really well-established digital media sector (a lot of larger UK companies send their digital portfolio to Manchester firms) and interesting Berlin-esque grassroots hacking/coding/development community.

So, after two years, we've got a member-owned Independent & Provident Society/Co-operative up and running, and tomorrow morning, we move into our new home!

The guys at MadLab[2] took over an unused building in the heart of the Northern Quarter (home to most of the trendier businesses in Manchester), and offered us 1,000 square foot of space to use. It took some work. When we first looked at it, it looked pretty awful:

So, we raised some cash, rolled our sleeves up, knocked a wall down and got stuck in with painting, sanding the floor and general decorating. The result is pretty nice (apols for the grainy pic, better ones to follow):

We're all really excited and looking forward to using the space, collaborating and helping as many freelancers and entrepreneurs connect on a daily basis and have an interesting/exciting space to work in. The cross-over potential with MadLab gets us excited too.

If any of you here are interested in discussing cross-space collaboration, please get in touch. I just wanted to say hello and let you all know we existed and we're happy to be part of the co-working community.

I'm involved with the Hub network of coworking spaces
(http://the-hub.net) and that is pretty much how most Hubs operate.
Generally (but not always) no-one gets a fixed desk or private office,
but most spaces offer meeting rooms that can be booked by the hour.
We've got some basic software that lets members book the meeting
spaces online and invoices them for it too. We sell it with support to
new Hubs, but AFAIK its open source code so if anyone wants access to
it let me know and I'll see what we can do :)
