Ooops...the domain is owned by Noel

I should have recalled that conversation. Noel snatched up every coworking
domain available at the end of last year, so Noel Hidalgo is the one to talk
to about getting a:

yourcity.coworking.info

However, as we've found in San Francisco, there is more than one, so be
cognizant of that. The 'yourcity' should include all spaces in that region
and link to your specific space.

Re: Coworking community portal - proposal/demo

Wow, this is getting exciting!
I won't make it to SxSW either, but will support form the old world and send good vibes :)

As for the platform, may I suggest to consider also a couple of features centered more on the user than on the space, like:
. reviews of spaces
. referrals for coworkers
Nothing really new, the model could be the one used by couchsurfing.com
Finally, if user profiles include skills, you could plan to move to a space the "fits your needs" also from the collective intelligence perspective.

Cheers,
  Rick

Oh...and for any newbies who don't know who 'Chris' or I am...the story:

The name coworking, as well as the original concept, came from a great guy named Brad Neuberg here in San Francisco. One day, Chris Messina came across Brad's flyer for the space, which ran one day per week out of a community space called The Spiral Muse in the Mission and absolutely fell in love with the idea. Chris is one of the cofounders of BarCamp and he and I run Citizen Space and co-founded Citizen Agency on the concept of creating building blocks for independents...making our 'living' off community consulting. :)

Chris and I, along with a group of others, founded The Hat Factory, which is down in Portrero Hill...I believe Brad is still working there now (has moved from Spiral Muse) and then opened our own space in South Park called Citizen Space, which is a free, open resource, unless you want to park at a desk monthly (which is completely full now). Drop ins are always welcome and we do loads of community events there and offer our space to anyone doing a not-for-profit event for free (and for-profit is negotiable).

We travel around the world to BarCamps, spreading the coworking idea to those communities, who are ripe for it (many independents).

We own coworking.info and have the pbwiki account for the current wiki. Citizen Space is:

http://citizenspace.us
http://citizenspace.us/calendar/
http://citizenspace.us/location/

but don't take that as our final product. Chris hacked that together in a couple of hours. We've been meeting with the folks from New York co-working (hey Noel!) and Paris co-working on ideas going forward. Many people are just in the process of trying to set up their spaces...needing resources, etc., so that's what we've been working on thusfar. Documenting the cases thusfar. We have a full-blown office, but others have a couple of days per week, and others are thinking of setting up entire 'cafes'.

So, that's who we are. When the article hit the newstands, we were in Paris, plotting with the people there. The wiki has been going out of control.

Oh...and, like BarCamp, it is a decentralized non-organization organization, but we do want to guide everything along so the community is totally covered and involved...especially those in other languages and who have specific needs.

Hey,

Awesome stuff...and feel free to bring this to the Coworking Meetup if you are at SXSW interactive. Funny thing is...you aren't the only ones who are working on the portal, so before 10 different projects go off in 10 different directions, we should take a look at all of the proposals.

What we have been sketching out includes interactive maps that show who is where at any given time (with zoom in and out), events listings in a subscribe-able calendar (or for just particular regions), photos, the ability to pre-schedule spots (if necessary in the future). It will also include blogs for each space (which will be aggregated), profiles for the people at the spaces and customizable/clone-able templates for each space to be able to join and give it their own look. Etc.

Who registered coworking on Twitter? Instead of one particular person twittering there, we should probably run a script through the site to send out alerts as well as take reservations and give information. We were starting to talk to Twitter's lead developer on this.

I haven't asked Chris, but we'll probably host it with the other projects (BarCamp, etc.).

Re: Coworking community portal - proposal/demo

Tara,

Great! Thanks for catching us newbies up.

I think the difference here is that, while both are clearly "I had
some time this weekend" projects, my project is more of an effort to
create a web service platform for anyone who wants to create a
coworking space, rather than a single site to promote a particular
project. I do love some of the touches Chris put on the application,
though, especially the 30boxes calendar.

Would be happy to talk to you and Chris off-list, though, since you
clearly some refinements in mind.

Best,
Phil

Also, I'll present coworking at the next BarCamp in Genoa (April 28th)

Social network site for coworking in Barcelona

Hi,
I set up a social network site for coworking in Barcelona. Anyone is
welcome. It's a forum/social thing, and hopefully will be a good place
for people to meet up and, well, arrange to meet in real life!

The address:

http://cowork.ning.com/

It was easy. I used Ning, a new tool for doing this kind of thing, so
I reckon anyone can easily set up a site like this for their own city.
Come on over!

Re: press in businessweek.com

I'm still trying to figure out if all of this press is a good thing right now or not. :|

We are still quite unprepared, although there seems to be tonnes of spaces set up as businesses around North America who were featured, coworking itself is still trying to find it's legs. I feel that this big mainstream market push is too early. I suppose we can see it as a 'let's get cracking' thing, though.

ABC Global news? Who are you dowdsy? What space are you from? (Sorry...I don't recognize the email...). Make certain you mention a couple of things that aren't found on the wiki...

- Silicon Sentier in Paris (the coworking space there) is due to be launched in the next month or so in the Montmartre area. It will be three stories, a cafe on the main floor, offices on the second floor and an event space/meeting spaces on the third floor. All free or inexpensive...just to cover the costs, really. It is partially funded by the local Paris government to help out the tech economy.

- Toronto is abuzz with coworking spaces as well as throwing a conference, OpenCities, that will address coworking amongst other things - contact Mark Kuznicki on this one

- We are encouraging people who currently have an excess of space to donate parts of it to coworking. This is a strong model. Even British Telecom in London, UK is considering opening their cafe in the downtown office to vagabond workers to come and use during the daytime. It isn't just about starting your own cafe...it's also about making use of space that is already there. The advantages of new energy that enters the space and talent recruitment is obvious.

- Even NASA is getting into the act and has joined our space (Citizen Space) because they recognize the power of being part of these collaborative spaces. They now have a desk here and may take desks in other centers if it goes well.

Some of the issues everyone is facing:

- How to balance these collaborative spaces with actual work spaces? How do we get stuff done as well as encourage interaction? As many startups are coming into these spaces, it becomes an issue.

- Intellectual Property has been an issue. Most of these spaces encourage an open plan, even for meeting spaces...with the idea that discussions should be public to allow for many minds to get involved and help one another out. This has been extremely fruitful for everyone involved, but many companies still have a tough time wrapping their minds around getting rid of NDAs and keeping a shroud of secrecy.

- Is this a collective or should their be space leaders? Ideally, these spaces are run by the community, but thusfar, it has been a problematic model. We are looking at a hybrid model described in the book by Ori Brafman, The Starfish and the Spider, which looks to 'catalysts' and 'guides' to lead these spaces, with the community members being semi-detached, but given the ability to become 'deputized' within the meritocratic system. Very much an Open Source development model.

- Keeping the spaces populated and buzzing daily. When it isn't 'your office', impetus to go to the coworking spaces is lowered, so the attendance at some spaces has been sporatic...much like a coffee shop (go when you feel like home is driving you stir crazy). If there isn't critical mass in a space, it loses the advantage of the collaborative. Do we encourage more 'office-like' spaces so people are encouraged to leave their workstations there and, thus, driven to their office each day? How do we keep from becoming those sterile 'office' setups?

Amongst other issues. Each city and each space within each city has a unique problem, too, as more questions arise within different cultures and contexts.

Tara
