Subject: Coming to Manchester

Hi David,

I just wanted to let you know that I will be in Manchester this week. I'm arriving Tuesday morning and leaving
Sunday morning. My schedule is pretty full, but I thought we might try to get together at least for a drink or
maybe a meal if you're around and available.

I'm coming in for an event at MMU on Wednesday and Thursday, and hanging around the art world the rest of the
time. As of right now, my free-est looking times are Tuesday evening and Friday evening, though I haven't
seen my whole schedule yet. There probably will be other times.

Anyway, drop me a line if you're around.

Bests,

Phil

CFP: Cinema in Iran

Call for Papers:

Cinema in Iran: Circulation, Censorship and Cultural Production

Berlin, Germany
December 16-18, 2011

Hosted by the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania, with the Free
University of Berlin, Institute for Film Studies, and George Washington University

Iran is undergoing a period of socio-political transformation joined to a cultural space that despite
binding censorship regulations, circumnavigates restrictive bans and, in the world of film, generates
award winning, critically acclaimed masterpieces.

In the course of this two and a half day workshop, participants will investigate Iranian cinema as part of
Iran’s rich media and cultural ecology:

Among the areas to be explored and discussed:

· The contemporary political and industrial context in which films are produced, distributed, and
consumed in Iran and the ways in which formal and informal censorship structures and practices impact the industry;
·       Public debate surrounding film in Iran;
·       Cinematic circulation and flows among and between the Iranian diaspora and Iranians in Iran;
·       The role of Iranian cinema as public diplomacy;
· The political economy of film in Iran, including piracy and do-it-yourself (DIY) cinematic production
such as YouTube;
·       Conceptions and productions of audiences;
·       Film as both a formal and informal information conduit in closed or censored societies;
· The position of Iranian filmmakers in relation to the socio-political convergences in their country

Technical difficulties

Hi, all --

As some of you have noticed, the list has been unnaturally quiet of late. There's a long, boring, technical,
bureaucratic story here -- and while it's not entirely a pleasant tale, it does have a happy ending. At
least for now. The list should be up and running normally once more. There appears to be a mini-backlog of
posts sent over the past few days working its way through the server right now. If you attempted to post
something to the list and it does NOT appear in the next 24 hours (or if you've already received an error
message indicating a failed delivery), you might want to try sending that message again.

Apologies for any inconveniences this outage may have caused.

Cheers,
Gil Rodman

CFP: Myths and Fairy Tales in African Cinema

*Africa in Motion 2011 Symposium CFP*

*Symposium on Myths and Fairy Tales in African Cinema*

*Call for Papers*

 Africa in Motion Film Festival 2011 will focus on films and events that
open doors to *children and youth in Africa*. As the young represent the
future as they learn from the past, we will be looking at representations
for, by and about children and young people in the rural areas and the
sprawling urban centers of Africa. As a vital aspect of children’s lives is
their education both within and outside of the family structure, we will
look at how *(his)stories and myths* are told, changed and exchanged through
time, and how they influence the form, style and structure of film in the
relatively young cinemas from Africa.

 This forthcoming symposium on *29**th** October 2011* invites renewed
reflection on *stories, myths and tales* as a means of inheriting and
reflecting on Africa’s past, present and future. Storytelling is an
essential aspect of African cinema as the role of the African griot and the
legacy of history as a story or myth has deeply influenced filmmakers such
as Ousmane Sembène and Férid Boughedir.

 The symposium seeks to interrogate the dramatic, poetic and visual
character of culturally foundational stories (fairy / mythic / classical /
religious etc), the formal operations and cultural force of their diverse
tellings and showings across media, and the ways in which their
psychological, social, political and aesthetic functions have been
interpreted and employed.

Hi Liza,
You might try checking out a film by the Media Education Foundation
called 'Class Dismissed.' I use it often when I teach about media
representation and/or class.

Deadline For Abstracts

September 1st, 2011

Henry Fox Talbot famously described photography as
the “pencil of nature.” Although this metaphor refers to photography’s special
relationship to the real, to the indexicality that makes it suited for
naturalist representation, Talbot’s evocative phrase also raises important
questions about photography’s relationship to nature. Indeed, nature remains an
abiding passion among contemporary practitioners as it was among early
photographers. Beyond naturalism and nature appreciation, however, how has
photography approached nature?
