Call for Papers: Environmentalism and Aesthetics in Chicano/a History (NACCS 2010)

Call for Papers
National Association for Chicana/Chicano Studies
Seattle, Washington (April 7-10, 2010)

Environmentalism and Aesthetics in Chicano/a History

During the 1800s, Anglo-American explorers and settlers justified their
expropriation of Southwestern lands with the argument that Indians and
Mexicans in the region were incapable of taking proper care of the
region’s rich natural resources. Such discourses manifest themselves
today in the popular perception that Mexican-Americans and Mexican
immigrants lag behind Anglos when it comes to ecological awareness, but
as commentators like Devon Peña and Laura Pulido note there is in fact a
complex environmental ethic that permeates Chicano/a history. This panel
will examine the role that aesthetics has played in creating, debating,
and reproducing green politics within Mexican-American communities since
1848. Papers can address any form of Chicana/o cultural production
(visual arts, fiction, poetry, music, dance, etc.) and its relationship
to environmentalism.

Possible topics could include:

· Chicano movement art and environmentalism

· Landscape and the /corrido /tradition

· Hispano art and its relation to land use struggles in New Mexico

· Mexican-American art as a challenge to the dominant environmental movement

Studies in Transversality is a series of encounters between
researchers, cultural workers, and organisers who are concerned with
the contexts and consequences of their practices beyond their
respective fields of specialisation, and who wish to open new lines of
subjectivation. This session is the first of the year and brings
together the practices of Colectivo Situaciones (Argentina), and a
number of groups who are researching and organising around questions
of creative labour, knowledge production and contemporary social
movements in the UK and Europe today. Working through the notion of
militant research, the session aims to examine the separations between
university based academic research, cultural workers, and activists,
the reason why these separations exist, and to share the working
methods of these groups.

Call for papers: American Comparative Literature Association Annual
Meeting 2010: "Creoles, Diasporas, Cosmopolitanisms" http://
www.acla.org , 1-4 April 2010, New Orleans. Seminar on "Anti-Semitism
and Anti-Roma in Post-1989 Central and East Europe," Org. Steven
Totosy de Zepetnek http://docs.lib.purdue.edu/clcweblibrary/totosycv .
The seminar "Anti-Semitism and Anti-Roma in Post-1989 Central and East
Europe" is about the situation of Jews and Roma in Central and East
Europe since the demise of the Soviet empire. "Central and East
Europe" is defined as the regions of the former Austro-Hungarian
empire and including the Baltics and the former East Germany. While a
cultural, political, and social phenomenon across Europe, it is in
particular since the demise of the Soviet empire that anti-Semitism
and anti-Other occurs in the former states of Soviet colonialism. With
regard to Austria and the the former East Germany as in post-1989
Germany, the situation of the Jewry and the Roma is in many ways
different than in the former communist states, nevertheless the
phenomenon exists to a high degree. In the case of Austria and Hungary
the phenomenon is of particular interest as these two countries have
been involved in the Second World War including the extermination of
Jews and Roma but did not undergo Vergangenheitsbewältigung similar to
Germany, albeit for different reasons. In Hungary, for example, the
term "cosmopolitan" is used as a negative term referring to Jews. In
countries such as Slovakia or Romania, the phenomenon is also
particularly virulent. The seminar invites abstracts of papers on
aspects and occurrences of anti-Semitism, anti-Roma, and anti-Other
(i.e., anti-immigrant) studied and analyzed in various fields
including comparative literature, cultural studies, media studies
(i.e., the phenomenon as it occurs in various media including new
media), sociology, political science, philosophy, etc.; papers in
interdisciplinarity are also welcome. Following peer review, selected

Reminder: Conference on Applied Interculturality Research | Deadline (Oct 15th) Approaching

Dear Colleagues,

cAIR10 is a conference on Applied Interculturality Research taking place at the University of Graz,
Austria from April 7th to 10th, 2010. cAIR combines the resources of research (universities,
institutes) and practice (government, civil society, NGOs, schools, media) to raise awareness about
sexism, racism and xenophobia and reduce its prevalence and impact. cAIR helps practitioners to benefit
from researchers, and researchers from practitioners - and promotes high standards in both areas.
Keynote addresses will be given by international leaders in interculturality research and practice.

The extended deadline for submission of project summaries is October 15th - further information and the
guidelines for the project summaries can be found on our homepage: http://www.uni-graz.at/fAIR/cAIR10/

Please send your project summaries to: cair10 <at> uni-graz.at

Kind Regards,
Mag. Martina Koegeler

Re: Studies in Transversality: Militant Research London October 13-14

Hi Joe,
Thanks for passing on the AAUP conference information. I am interested, but
also our travel budget has been all but eliminated this year, and so I'm
being cautious about conferences.

Have you seen this notice about "Militant Research"? I wish we had known
about them earlier.

Hope your week is off to a good start,
Ranu
