Re: syllabi request/help

Matt,

I teach a course on new media with an online syllabus from last spring at
http://segue.middlebury.edu/sites/fmmc0246a-s07 , which I encourage people
to poach from (and point me toward similar sites reciprocally). As is the
nature of such a course, it will be transformed quite significantly this
coming year. And if you (or anyone else) is interested, I blogged about the
student's work at
http://justtv.wordpress.com/2007/06/12/teaching-media-technology-a-roundup/
to highlight some of the projects.

I look forward to seeing other comparable courses out there. Good luck!
-Jason

CULTURE MACHINE 10 (2008)

PIRATE PHILOSOPHY
Edited by Gary Hall

The Pirate Philosophy issue of Culture Machine will explore how the
development of various forms of so-called internet piracy are affecting
ideas of authorship, intellectual property, copyright law, fair use,
patent, trademark, content creation and cultural production that were
established pre-internet.

We are looking for contributions which, among other things, engage
critically with:

   * the philosophy of internet piracy, peer-to-peer file sharing,
     Grokster, Kazaa, Gnutella, EDonkey, BitTorrent, Pirate Bay and so
     on;
   * attempts to develop new, different or alternative philosophies of
     content creation, intellectual property and/or copyright (e.g.
     those associated with open editing, open content, Creative Commons
     and copyleft licenses, Lawrence Lessig’s ‘free culture’, the free
     software and open source movements, the work of Richard Stallman
     and Eric Raymond…);
   * the implications and consequences of the above for conceptions of
     the academic author, scholarly writing, publishing, pedagogy, the
     book, the journal, peer review and the institution of the
     university in the era of digital reproducibility;
   * efforts that have been made to scale-up the relations of production
     and distribution associated with peer-to-peer networks to form new

Re: Re: syllabi request/help

Hi Matt,

I'm teaching a class called Digital Technology and Cultural Change
right now that spends a lot of time on social networking and the
like. My syllabus is up on my website:

http://billkirkpatrick.net/syllabi.html

This is the first time I've taught it and there is much I would
change the next time through (I had very little on gaming, and not
enough on privacy and security), but Yochai Benkler's book The Wealth
of Networks worked really well in a 300-level course. Benkler is
particularly strong on social networking as both a cultural and
economic phenomenon. I can also strongly recommend showing or
assigning Eben Moglen's keynote talk at the Plone conference (link is
at the end of my syllabus), which puts the open-source phenomenon in
clear ethical terms that seemed to really connect with my students.

Hope that helps,
--Bill

Re: Looking for Spivak cite

Can anyone help me find an interview in which Spivak, frustrated by
questions about roots, declares that she is not a rutabaga? It would
have been published at least 10-15 years ago, maybe more.
Thanks,
Ranu
