re: britney

my wife Deirdre Day-MacLeod wrote a brilliant article on britney and the
cultural history of the belly button for brittanica.com back when they
were doing some interesting stuff (roger brown was the editor -- anyone
know where he is?).

unfortunately, we never saved the webpage (only paper copies) and now it
is gone. anyone have any suggestions for how to retrieve it? the article
is well worth reading.

Wanted: Chapter on the Web and self-help, for "Web.Studies" book

WANTED: CHAPTER ABOUT PEOPLE USING THE
WEB FOR 'SELF-HELP' SUPPORT
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

SUMMARY:

We are editing the second edition of the book
"Web.Studies: Rewiring Media Studies for the Digital
Age", and we are looking for someone who is able to write
a chapter on how the Web is used by people for 'self-
help' purposes -- for example, gaining support to get
through a particular illness, or traumatic stage of life.
Discussion of other ways in which people use the Web to
transform their everyday existence (e.g. to develop their
self-worth) would also be welcome as part of this. The
piece should be 3,500 words and written in an accessible,
introductory style.

If you are someone who could do this -- and have it
written by 15th October 2002 -- then please get in touch
with us (email david <at> theory.org.uk). If you can forward
this to anyone you know who might be able to help, please
do. Thank you very much.

A FEW DETAILS:

The first edition of "Web.Studies" was published in
August 2000. Several reviewers have described it as an
"excellent" introduction to new media issues for students

Re: Britney

Kudos to yr daughter Greg. Pink's record--at least what I know of it, which is the brilliant "Don't Let Me Get
Me"--may be the first flowering of a *real* punk sensibility on the pop charts since Cobain died ... under
cover of dance music, no less.

p.s. The nine-year old in this house has no time for Britney. It is Pink all
the way. Last weekend she sang the whole 'Missundaztood' album,
accapella, to her best friends Haneen and Dana in the pup tent set up in
the front yard. Really. It took almost an hour. Swear words replaced by
giggles ... and I wonder if Republicans think that Bob Dole 'sold out' to
Britney too.

Subject: INSTRAW Virtual Seminar Series on Gender and ICT

8 June 2002

Dear Colleagues,

I am pleased to inform you that INSTRAW has launched its research and
networking project on “Gender and ICTs”. A special website, containing
searchable database of resources, news and events, relevant links and
information on the seminar series has been prepared to serve as a portal
to this project.

I would like to invite you to participate in the “Virtual Seminar Series”
on Gender and ICTs which are meant to be forums for exchange of research
based knowledge and information through discussions and background
materials. Thy aim at highlighting good practices and lessons learned,
identification of research and policy gaps, and outlining policy options
and recommendations. The Virtual Seminars will result in Synthesis Paper,
plus weekly summaries of discussions.

The guest moderator to the seminar series is Sophia Huyer, Executive
Director of Women in Global Science and Technology (WIGSAT) and Executive
Director of the Gender Advisory Board of the United Nations Commission on
Science and Technology for Development. Background papers prepared by
experts from different regions of the world will serve to stimulate the
discussions:
