The feds at the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have this week called in some self-described
"deviant" consultants to aid them in the battle against terrorists, illegal immigrants, smugglers et al.

The deviants in question are a group of science fiction writers, namely Jerry Pournelle, Arlan Andrews,
Greg Bear, Larry Niven, Yoji Kondo and Sage Walker.
"We need to look everywhere for ideas, and science-fiction writers clearly inform the debate,"
Christopher Kelly, spokesman for Homeland Security's Science and Technology division, told USA Today.

The writers are members of Sigma, a "think tank of patriotic science fiction writers" founded to advise
government officials by Arlan Andrews when he worked in the White House Science Office in the early 1990s.
He recruited only authors with advanced technical or medical degrees, in order to pass the "laugh test."

"If you don't read science fiction, you're not qualified to talk about the future," he told the St Louis Post-Dispatch.

"We're well-qualified nuts," added Jerry Pournelle, co-author with Larry Niven of the bestsellers
Footfall (alien invasion) and Lucifer's Hammer (comet strike apocalypse).

The educated scribes were invited to attend the Homeland Security Science and Technology Stakeholders
Conference as guests of the DHS. The writers weren't paid, and like scribblers everywhere seem to have
been reluctant to give out their best ideas for free. According to the Post-Dispatch, all they offered up was:

"material that becomes armor when struck by a bullet; an antibiotic that cures martyrdom; a satellite that
beams solar energy to earth."

Re: DHS calls in sci-fi writers as consultants

Ρήγκαν για τον πόλεμο των άστρων (SDI);

Ήταν εκείνη η σύναξη στην οποία αρνήθηκε να πάει ο Arthur Clacke.

Αυτά τα καταραμένα think tanks θα μας φάνε...

CBS Renews Jericho

CBS Renews Jericho

It's official: CBS has renewed the post-apocalyptic drama Jericho for
another seven episodes, to air sometime mid-season. Nina Tassler,
president, CBS Entertainment, made the announcement on the official
Jericho message board on June 6.

"Wow!" Tassler wrote. "Over the past few weeks you have put forth an
impressive and probably unprecedented display of passion in support of a
prime-time television series. You got our attention; your e-mails and
collective voice have been heard. As a result, CBS has ordered seven
episodes of Jericho for mid-season next year."

Tassler added that the show, about the residents of a small Kansas town
who struggle to survive in the wake of a nuclear disaster, would still
need to bring in viewers. "A loyal and passionate community has clearly
formed around the show," she said. "But that community needs to grow. It
needs to grow on the CBS Television Network, as well as on the many
digital platforms where we make the show available. We will count on you
to rally around the show, to recruit new viewers with the same
grass-roots energy, intensity and volume you have displayed in recent
weeks."

CBS offered no date or timeslot for the show's return. But it said that
it would rebroadcast Jericho reruns over the summer, stream them online
and release the first season on DVD on Sept. 25. The network also plans
on "continuing the story of Jericho in the digital world until the new
episodes return," Tassler wrote. "We will let you know specifics when we
have them so you can pass them on."
