Who Is Vodou "Good For"?

Vodou is a religion, as we all know. It is the service of God
according to primarily African models. Vodou also encourages respect
for ancestors, and invites direct communication with spiritual energy.

Now, tell me - who does not benefit from the service of God? Who
should not respect their ancestors? Who is not empowered by the
ability to invoke and direct spiritual energy?

A person has a choice, they may choose Vodou or Santeria or yoga or
Wicca or evangelical Christianity or any other belief system. That
is their choice. If a person chooses a religion other than Vodou,
this does not mean that Vodou would not be "good for" that person, it
means that they have chosen another religion, which is also "good
for" them - at least in their view.

Some people would like other people to believe that "Vodou is not for
everyone" and that practicing the Vodou religion when it is "not for
you" is "potentially dangerous"! That's nonsense.

First of all, the vast and overwhelming majority of Haitians are
Vodouisants. Did God just mysteriously arrange it so that anyone
Vodou is "good for", just happened to be born in Haiti? No! There
are all sorts of Haitians, all different temperaments and so on, just
like there are all sorts of Americans. But again, most are
Vodouisants.

Secondly, each and every person on the face of the earth has at least
one lwa with them, their lwa met tet. Some people know who that lwa
is and serve it. Some know but don't serve, and some people just
plain don't know - but they have a lwa, all the same.

Some people might find possessions disquieting.
Others might be squicked by animal sacrifice, or
find the amount of effort and expense involved in
serving the lwa to be too great. In these cases,
or in several others I could think of, I'd say
that Vodou was "not for these people."

I doubt that I would find involvement with
Fundamentalist Christianity or Chasidic Judaism
to be very satisfying, so I would say these
paths "are not for me." That doesn't mean they
are *wrong*, or that I am somehow better (or
worse) than those who find these spiritual
practices useful. It just means that they
are not for me.

As to "Dangerous:" I'd say that the lwa are
very immediate, and tend to work very quickly.
In my experience (over 9 years of work with
various lwa; about 20 years' involvement in
various flavors of Neopaganism and Ceremonial
Magic), I *have* seen people who were injured by

"Squicked"? I think YOU are "squicked", maybe.

Vodou service does not require animal sacrifice, it's
possible to make a perfectly appropriate service
without killing any animals.

Vodou service does not require spending lots of money,
it's possible to make a perfectly appropriate service
without spending a lot of money or a great deal of time.

Group Service for Atibon Legba! This Saturday...

Over on the Vodou Arts message board, we have
begun coordinating a group service for the lwa
Legba, which will be held this Saturday. I and
the Haitian initiates of the Roots Without End
Society will perform this ceremony here in Jacmel
in our beautiful peristyle, and international
members and non-initiates will do it at home
or outdoors, as they choose.

There is one URL that you might want to check,
describing one way for non-initiates to do a
service for Legba. It's found at:

http://www.RootsWithoutEnd.com/legbaserv.html

Come on over to Vodou Arts for more information
and to participate in the planning and discussion!

Peace and love,

I've yet to attend a Haitian Vodou ceremony at my
house or any other house which did not involve
possession. Indeed, the arrival of several lwa is
looked upon by *every* Vodouisant I know as a sign
that the service was done correctly... and a paucity
of possessions would be seen as a sign that something
was wrong.

It is certainly possible to serve the lwa in a Wiccan
or Neopagan manner, and that would not (and SHOULD
NOT) involve possessions. However, if we are talking
about Vodou as it is practiced in Haiti and the
Haitian Diaspora, then possession is a major part of
the practice.
