x0x Amasya

By ERDEM KABADAYI

Sweet repose Amasya Houses that hug the Yesilirmak
River with their 'cumba's stand in the heart of
Amasya, witness to many of the civilizations that
once made Anatolia their home.

"I crossed a small rise and came upon the most
beautiful sight I'd ever seen in my life: the
ancient city of Amasya." So does Marshal Helmuth
von Moltke describe this historic city. Ancient
Amasya, famed for its river, its apples, its
houses, its natural beauty. City where Ferhat took
the river by the hand and, tunneling through the
mountain, brought it for Shirin; city founded as
'Amaseia' by the Amazon queen 'Amasis', who gave
it her own name; city where Strabo, renowned
geographer of antiquity, was born; melting pot of
many of the civilizations that left their imprint
on Anatolia; 'city of princes' to the Ottomans;
and city where Mustafa Kemal launched his national
struggle for Turkish independence...

FROM THE HITTITES TO THE OTTOMANS

x0x The deep call of Kemer

By LEVENT KONUK

The deep call of Kemer The turquoise waters of the
Mediterranean have an appeal for divers too. Are
you prepared to discover three shipwrecks in a
single day?

Anatolia has been home to various civilizations
over the centuries, and although the seas that
surround this land can perhaps not compare with
the tropical seas in terms of the range and
vitality of their submarine life, these waters
boast a very special wealth; shipwrecks.

Some of them have sunk in storms, others as the
result of warfare, but all have rested intact at
the bottom for centuries and today provide
unforgettable moments for the divers who visit
them. For a diver, nothing matches the thrill of
diving down to a wreck.

begin to scan the surroundings. At first you are
met by a vague scene, and can't decide whether it

Turkey is even tastier, friendlier, cheaper and richer in culture and
history than its more popular neighbor, Greece.

Turkey is a proud new country. It was born in 1923, when Kemal Atatrk, the

colonialism. He divided church and state, liberated women (at least on
paper), replaced the Arabic script with Europe's alphabet, and gave the
battle-torn, corrupt and demoralized remnants of the Ottoman Empire the
foundation of a modern nation. Because of Atatrk, today's 66 million Turks
have a flag and reason to wave it.
