Para peneliti berhasil menghitung
jumlah penyimpanan karbon global dalam rumput laut yang mencapai 19,9
miliar metrik ton. 

Hal tersebut terungkap dalam siaran
pers National Science Foundation yang diumumkan kepada publik kemarin
(23/5). Rumput laut adalah bagian penting dari solusi mengatasi
perubahan iklim. 

Dalam satu wilayah, rumput laut bisa
menyimpan karbon dua kali lebih banyak dibanding hutan-hutan dunia.
Temuan ini dipublikasikan dalam jurnal Nature Geoscience, minggu ini.

Laporan yang berjudul "Seagrass
Ecosystems as a Globally Significant Carbon Stock," adalah
analisis global pertama yang membahas mengenai potensi penyimpanan
karbon di rumput laut.

Hasil penelitian ini menemukan bahwa
hamparan rumput laut di wilayah perairan, mampu menyimpan karbon
hingga 83,000 metrik ton per km2. Kebanyakan dari karbon-karbon ini
tersimpan di dalam tanah, di antara rumput-rumput laut tersebut.

Sebagai perbandingan, hutan biasa,
mampu menyimpan karbon sebesar 30.000 metrik ton per km2 dalam bentuk

kampung berjualan sayur. Sementara di sore hari, dia menarik becak mencari
penumpang di ujung jalan dekat rumahnya.

US National Academy of Sciences says forest is being converted even faster than thought

Indonesia’s tropical forest is being converted to oil palm plantations even faster than was thought,
giving rise of the possibility that only 4 percent of forest outside of protected areas will be intact,
according to a study by 10 scientists for the US National Academy of Sciences.

The report, available here, completed in March, says that two-thirds of all Indonesian forest outside of
protected areas has been leased to oil palm companies, and that by 2020 a third will be in plantations.
Scientists from Yale University, Stanford University, the Carnegie Institution for Science at
Cranfield University, the University of Virginia, Indiana University and the Santa Fe Institute
participated in the study.

Although Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono last September pledged to uphold sustainable
forest practices, in Jakarta today, a coalition of green groups led by Greenpeace said the moratorium the
government had proposed was weak and ineffective. Although the president in a speech to a forest
protection association said in November that the government had set up programs to enhance agricultural
productivity as well as ensure an adequate stock of staple food, including rice, as well as launching a
tree-planting campaign aimed at planting at least 1 billion new trees annually, the government’s
plans are largely viewed as a flop. 

A Greenpeace spokesman said the ban put in place to protect the forest by the government excludes large

Flickering lights from hundreds of paper lanterns adorned the sky above me, bringing hope for peace and a
prosperous Ambon. At Pattimura Park, I saw people from various regions and religions joyfully gathered
to celebrate Pattimura Day on May 15. They waited all night for the Pattimura torch parade, but as dawn
approached, it had still not come. 

Instead, the group received unexpected news: A riot and explosion near the border of Mardika and Batu Merah
villages had broken up the parade. The news later on national television was discouraging, reminding me
of the 1999 conflict. No less than 46 people were injured, and almost all of them were Christian. 

My thoughts went out to the victims and the Ambonese people in general, whose resilience in the face of
conflict has been tested repeatedly. In September of last year, the city did well and stopped a riot from
growing, partly thanks to “peace provocateurs,” an interfaith group that tried to prevent violence
by spreading accurate information about the situation to the public through social media. 

That’s actually why I found myself in Ambon — to visit these peacekeepers for research for the
Paramadina Foundation, an Islamic learning center that promotes tolerance. I wondered, how would the
group respond to the situation this time? 

Considering the police’s performance, increasing segregation and the terror during the last
incident, their task won’t be easy. And the pressure is on, with the upcoming National Koran Reading
(MTQ) event at stake along with the region’s general prospects for peace.

Singapore. For most of his life, Indonesian Lauw Tjoan Eng faced rejection from people afraid of his looks.

But he got a break when a photo essay in the Jakarta Globe on his plight spurred others to lend assistance,
including three Singaporean doctors who have helped the 50-year-old regain his sight in an afflicted eye.

Lauw suffers from a rare genetic condition known as neurofibromatosis, or Von Recklinghausen’s
disease. There is no cure for the non-contagious illness, which results in tumors forming on the nerves or
under the skin.

The unemployed bachelor, who lives in Jakarta, has tumors of varying sizes covering his body — from the
head right down to his feet. 

“People are scared of me. They don’t make any nasty comments. Maybe because they are afraid of
retribution,” he said.

For the last 15 years, he had lumps that grew bigger and bigger within the tissue of his eyelid, causing it to
droop down to his nose, covering his right eye.

Last Wednesday, he finally regained its use after surgery by plastic surgeon Leslie Quek. It involved
removing the growths obstructing his eye and eyelid.

Eye specialist Lee Hung Ming, who is treating Lauw for cataracts and glaucoma, and anaesthetist Kong Chee

The integration of immigrant women in the West

A recent column by Murtaza Haider about Canadian-Pakistanis discussed very well the issue of
assimilation and difference in values among the locals and the immigrants who in this case were
Pakistanis. Looking around Europe, this seems to be the biggest issue in national politics. The issues of
assimilation and the cultural shock that Pakistanis face are very similar to the immigrant population in
the Netherlands.

The major immigrant group in The Netherlands is from Muslim countries of Morocco and Turkey. The issue of
their assimilation has become so vital to the Dutch society that the last general elections were
dominated by only this theme along with issue of economic recession. Populist leaders like Geert Wilders
of the movie “fitna” fame, came to power with a mandate of saving the country from becoming
“NethArabia”. The Dutch, anti-immigrant sentiment rests on many complaints like the lack of
participation of immigrant women in public life, the introduction of a different culture in their
neighborhoods, the headscarves of women, the rise of the mosques in their cities and the lack of
integration of these immigrants in public life. As with most immigrant populations in most developing
countries, these minorities are normally poorer as compared to the Dutch families and many rely on social
security benefits. This, in turn labels them as lazy or exploitative of the social security system.

The Dutch government has taken the integration of immigration issue very seriously and introduced many
steps to ensure greater participation of the immigrants in the Dutch society. At the heart of these
policies is ensuring greater involvement of the immigrant women in public life who come from very
conservative backgrounds. One of the very talked about policy is the compulsory Dutch language exam,
which every spouse has to take in their home country before being able to join their partner in The
Netherlands. To me, personally, it is more a policy of segregation of families than integration. It is
obviously targeted at the Dutch immigrants who want to marry someone from their native country. While I do
not find that justified, I do see the point of this rule – how many times have we heard about cases of
domestic violence in immigrant women who are not at all aware of their rights in their new country or who

Pakistan acid women fear backlash over Oscar film

ISLAMABAD: Survivors of acid attacks whose plight became the focus of an Oscar-winning documentary now
fear ostracism and reprisals if the film is broadcast in Pakistan.

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy made history earlier this year when she won Pakistan’s first Oscar, feted across
the country for exposing the horrors endured by women whose faces are obliterated in devastating acid
attacks. Her 40-minute film focuses on Zakia and Rukhsana as they fight to rebuild their lives after being
attacked by their husbands, and British Pakistani plastic surgeon Muhammad Jawad who tries to help
repair their shattered looks.

When ‘Saving Face’ scooped a coveted gold statuette in the documentary category in Hollywood in
February, campaigners were initially jubilant. The Acid Survivors Foundation Pakistan (ASF) had
cooperated on the film but some survivors now fear a backlash in a deeply conservative society - and are
taking legal action against the producers.

“We had no idea it would be a hit and win an Oscar. It’s completely wrong. We never allowed them to show
this film in Pakistan,” said Naila Farhat, 22, who features fleetingly in the documentary. She was 13
when the man she refused to marry threw acid on her face as she walked home from Independence Day
celebrations. She lost an eye and her attacker was jailed for 12 years. After a long, painful recovery, she
is training as a nurse.

Investigasi Greenpeace menemukan serat kayu dari hutan alam ada di dalam kemasan Kentucky Fried Chicken.

Puluhan aktivis Greenpeace menggelar unjuk rasa di depan kantor pusat perusahaan Yum! Brands di
Louisville, Kentucky, Amerika Serikat.
Mereka membentangkan banner raksasa dengan gambar harimau Sumatera (Panthera tigris sumatrae) dengan
tulisan “KFC Berhentilah Mencemari Habitat Kami“. 
KFC yang dimaksud adalah Kentucky Fried Chicken, restoran cepat saji yang memiliki 37 ribu outlet di 120 negara.
Kolonel Sanders adalah pendiri waralaba ayam goreng terkenal ini. Yum! Brands merupakan perusahaan
induk merek KFC, Pizza Hut, dan Taco Bell.

Demonstrasi yang berlangsung kemarin (pukul 19.00 WIB) menandai kampanye global Greenpeace untuk
menyerukan KFC agar tidak lagi memakai kemasan yang bahan bakunya dari sumber yang tidak ramah lingkungan.

Organisasi lingkungan global ini meneliti kotak-kotak makanan KFC, seperti streetwise lunchbox, snack
box, gelas kertas, dan lainnya, pada gerai di Inggris, Cina, dan Indonesia. Mereka melakukan uji
forensik dan penelusuran rantai pasokan dari sampel.

Penelitian dilakukan oleh ilmuwan di Institution for Paper Science and Technology di Jerman dan
Integrated Paper Service di Amerika. Hasilnya, kemasan KFC dan produk kertas di tiga negara itu terbukti
positif mengandung mixed tropical hardwood atau kayu keras tropis campuran/serat hutan hujan.

Hasil investigasi ini dipapar kan dalam laporan dengan judul Bagaimana KFC Terlibat Perusakan Hutan
versi bahasa Inggris dan Indonesia. “Pelanggan di seluruh dunia akan terkejut mengetahui bahwa
kemasan KFC berasal dari hutan hujan tropis yang rusak dari perusahaan Asia Pulp and Paper,“ kata
Bustar Maitar, juru bicara Kampanye Greenpeace untuk Penyelamatan Hutan di Indonesia kemarin.
