Re: How did you find Magician?

Hi!

I remember picking Magician: Apprentice at the local bookshop back in 95 or so. I had just finished some other series (can't remember which at the moment, might be I'd just finished the last published Jordan book or some such), and was browsing the shelves for something new to read. For some reason the book caught my eye, I bought it and havent regretted it even a second!

I've been a member of the list for a while, but I haven't posted... I was wondering how everyone found Magician when you read it the first time.

I went to Marist High School in Chicago and my freshman literature teacher, Mrs. Littleton had us read both, Apprentice and Master, for class... I have been in love with the story ever since. It is now 17 years later and it is the only series of books (really the only books) that I read... I always read the newest book in 1-2 days (which causes some rough mornings the next day).

I was probably about 20, give or take a year, when I overheard a guy
in my National Guard unit recommend this book to someone. I thought it
sounded interesting, so a few weeks later when I was in a bookstore I
found the book and picked it up. Enjoyed it a lot, read the rest of
the trilogy, and then got VERY excited when I found out a new, related
book was about to be published, and picked up Prince of the Blood when
it came out. Been a fan ever since -- and a scene in PotB has been a
favorite ever since, as well. I used to woo girls by sharing the scene
with Jimmy going for a swim, and stumbling into something. Awesome
scene.

When I got married, one reason I knew I'd found the right woman was
the amount of duplication we had on our bookshelves -- including two
nearly complete collections of Ray's works (most of my older copies in
paperback, most of her older copies in hardcover book club editions).
Working our our fifteenth year now.

New "get to know you" question

Who is everyone? For instance: age, location, job, family, outside interests?

I am 30 years old, from Chicago, Illinois, United States. I am an outside sales person to restaurants. I have been married for almost 5 years to my wife, Carmen. She is an occupational therapist focusing on hands. We have no kids, but just began trying. I play volleyball as much as possible, which is 4-6 nights per week (until we have kids). I am an avid Bulls, Bears, Cubs, and Blackhawks fan.

Re: New "get to know you" question

I am 22 years old and I am from South Africa. I am unemployed but I am currently writing my final year exams in university (ezpz) in geography and environmental management. Next year I am for reasons I am not whiling to go into doing another undergrad degree part time, this time B sci general. I shall also be seeking full time employment. I have a family, they are currently spread out over the world, From South Africa, to the UK to USA and even China for a while. There can be no more than 3 members of my family in a single country or the world will explode, we are invading your countries and stealing your jobs for the good an mankind. True story. My outside interests are reading, theater, and collecting old stuff, my mid term goal in life is there is an 17th century bible and this old map of Africa (hand drawn obviously, from when the middle of Africa had yet to be explored and explorers got away with using rather racist terms for the natives to describe who live in each place) in this antique store which I plan to buy when I am rich beyond imagining ( I will need to be rich beyond imagining because they are expensive, but I want them, I couldn't say why I am not even christian nor do I have need for an incomplete map). There now you know a little about me.

RE: New "get to know you" question

I'm 35 years old, am in Derby, England, I'm a Senior Conductor (Train Guard) for East Midlands Trains. I live with my partner of nearly 3 years, Sarah, who is a civil servant. We're expecting our first child any day now, she's due on the 7th of November.
I'm only just getting back into mountain biking, I try to get out as much as I can, but I'm currently recovering from sciatica, so biking is out for a little while! I'm also into steam trains(I volunteer at the Great Central Railway at Loughborough), model railways, video games, classic cars and history(as well as fantasy fiction and science fiction novels!).

Re: New "get to know you" question

I live in Las Cruces, NM (Not Mexico), USA. I'll be 40 in January and
have lived mostly in NM, but also in Denver, Orlando, Tampa,
Riverside, CA (was called Sunnymead back in 70s). I have worked in 12
states and been to many more. I got my BSCE from NMSU in 1995 and did
one year pursuing a MS in structural engineering then a year towards a
biology degree before I decided to get a job and make some money. I
am a licensed Professional Engineer (civil, structural and
construction) in NM and work for my best friend's wife doing
engineering and construction for private and government clients.

I listen to music and watch a lot of tv and movies with a collection
of over 800 cds, mostly classic rock and blues, about 800 or so dvds
and a growing contingent of blu-ray discs...yeah, I have hit the $5
bin far too frequently! I like working on remodeling projects,
shooting, hunting, motorcycles, 4x4s, electronics, photography,
pyrotechnics, woodworking, metalworking, traveling, etc... I am a
shooting instructor for the Appleseed Project.
http://www.appleseedinfo.org

I still play D&D and other RPGs with friends from high school and
college every once in a while. And while I need to catch up on a few
of Ray's newer books, I have yet to read one I didn't like. Magician
is still one of my all-time favorites, along with The Hobbit, The LOTR
trilogy, The Stand, Faerie Tale, etc.
