Syndetic Solutions cover images

At Brandeis we're working with VuFind as a possible NextGen catalog interface. We know that in the past
there were concerns with speed in loading cover images from Syndetic Solutions. Are libraries still
experiencing problems with this? With Amazon tightening up on the use of cover images, do you have other
solutions to suggest? Thanks for your help. Amira

Re: Syndetic Solutions cover images

Hi,

We use Syndetic for PINES (which is a group of 270+ libraries using Evergreen) and do not have an problems
with slowness. You might Check with Larry Hansard at Georgia Tech. I know they are using VuFind but am not
sure where they get the added content.

Re: Syndetic Solutions cover images

Hello Amira,

The TRLN libraries license Syndetics content for use with our Endeca
systems. And you are right that historically the demand on the
Syndetics servers has been so high as to cause exceptional latency,
especially for cover images. In March of this year Syndetics began
using a content delivery network to cache cover images. This places the
images "closer to our servers" and decreases the number of requests that
the Syndetics servers actually have to serve. We've seen significant
improvements in response time for all Syndetics requests, including
cover images, since they implemented the CDN.

    Hope this helps,

    Derek

internet archive content

Here is an recipe for adding Internet Archive (Open Content Alliance)
content to library "catalogs":

   1. Get keys - The first step is to get a set of keys describing the
content you desire. This can be acquired through the Internet
Archive's advanced search interface. [1]

   2. Convert keys - The next step is to convert the keys into sets of
URLs pointing to the content you want to download. Fortunately, all
the URLs have a similar shape: http://www.archive.org/download/KEY/KEY.pdf
, http://www.archive.org/download/KEY/KEY_meta.mrc, etc.

   3. Download - Feed the resulting URLs to your favorite spidering/
mirroring application. I use wget.

   4. Update - Enhance the downloaded MARC records with 856$u values
denoting the location of your local PDF copy as well as the original
(cononical) version.

   5. Index - Add the resulting MARC records to your "discovery" system.

I have hacked together some shell and Perl scripts that do this for me
in a VuFind context. [2] The next steps would be to use text mining
techniques to extract summaries, named entities, and statistically
relevant terms/phrases from the OCRed text(s) to enhance the 5xx, 7xx,
and 6xx fields of the downloaded MARC records, respectively.

Thank heavens for open content, whether it be full text books or
metadata.

Re: Syndetic Solutions cover images

The Villanova University implementation of VuFind using syndetics for cover
images and "enhanced" content.

We added a temporary caching layer to help with performance of images - have
a look:

Re: Syndetic Solutions cover images

I stand corrected - the Syndetics use at Villanova is no longer. However I
am aware of other instances with syndetics in VuFind and it seems to work
quite well.

Topic maps for "memory institutions" and Digital Humanities

Dear members of the list,

As part of my master thesis on Topic Maps (ISO/IEC 13250) I am trying to
collect its current -Web available- applications in the so called "memory
institutions" (libraries, archives and museums), as well as in the field of
Digital Humanities.

I would like to ask for your kind cooperation by adding to the list of
applications (for catalogs) that I have found so far in papers, with those
you may know:

*For Catalogs*
-Korean National Library (prototype in implementation)
-Danmarks Kunstbiblioteks katalog (prototype not implemented) (Denmark)
-The Royal Library (prototype not implemented) (Denmark)
-Stanford University Libraries' HighWire Press:
http://highwire.stanford.edu/help/hbt/ (it's working, as a visualization of
search results tool) (USA)

*For Digital Humanities*
-New Zealand Electronic Text Centre (NZETC) at Victoria University of
Wellington http://www.nzetc.org/
-The Swinburne Project (USA)
http://www.letrs.indiana.edu/tm4dh/topicmaps/swinburne.xtm
http://swinburnearchive.indiana.edu/swinburne/www/swinburne/index.html
-Auslit (Australia) http://www.austlit.edu.au/
-WebKat.hu (Hungary) http://www.webkat.hu/scripts/webkat
-Collections of Finnish National Gallery http://www.fng.fi
-Musica Migrans (Germany) http://www.musicamigrans.de/
-Classical Mythology (USA)

correction.Topic maps for "memory institutions" and Digital Humanities

Apologies for one mistake in the previous message:

-Stanford University Libraries' HighWire Press:
http://highwire.stanford.edu/help/hbt/
is applied as a facility for browsing and selection of indexing terms,
not for visualization of search results.

The application reported to do the later one is in: Howarth, L. &
Miller, T. (2005). Visualizing Search Results from Metadata-Enabled
Repositories in Cultural Domains. Presented at TMRA 2005. This
application transforms the result outputs in XTM for displaying
purposes.

It's own monster which is Topic Maps inspired but not the real thing.
:) (Maybe a good thing, too)

The prototype was TM, but the end-product no.

> -National treasures http://nationaltreasures.nla.gov.au/ (Australia) ?

Yes.

> -Mauritius Collection (Australia) ?

Only a non-working prototype. Nothing to write home about.

Alex

Re: Topic maps for "memory institutions" and Digital Humanities

Dear Liliana,
The University of Pavia used Topic Maps in a small (about 1600 topics and
4000 associations) project for a census of the cultural patrimony located
in the mountain community of the province of Pavia (a sort of ethnographic
documentation center).

See CeDECA (Centro di Documentazione Etnografica e di Cultura Appenninica)
http://www.cedeca.it (I'm sorry but it's only in italian).
