2008 Library Automation Survey -- closing soon

Gentle reminder: The 2008 Library Automation Survey will be closing
soon.

If you have not yet responded, I hope that you will do so in the next
few days. Please help me assess the current state of the library
automation arena by responding to the survey and giving your library's
perceptions of its current automation software and the organizations
involved in supporting it.

Original survey invitation message:

I am conducting another round of the library automation perceptions
survey. Last year's survey was the basis for "Perceptions 2007: an
international survey of library automation:"

  http://www.librarytechnology.org/perceptions2007.pl

The data collected through this year's survey will inform a similar
report that provides the statistical results and interprets to the
extent possible what it says about the current library automation arena.

The survey aims to measure how libraries perceive their current library
automation system, the companies involved in their support and
development, and to gauge interest in open source alternatives. As more
libraries become involved with open source ILS products, I'm especially
interested in measuring their satisfaction relative to those that use
traditionally licensed systems.

Last year I received 1,779 survey responses. An even larger volume of
responses this year will help increase the validity of the survey and

Re: Call for participation in National Libraries testing of RDA

Dianne,

The DCMI/RDA Task Group has been doing some testing of RDA data since
last fall, based on several cataloging scenarios we developed with
members of the community, using what we then knew about the RDA element
set and roles vocabulary. The scenarios and testing are available at:
http://dublincore.org/dcmirdataskgroup/ The site also includes use
cases, developer scenarios, etc. We're happy to have the testing group
use as much of these as are useful.

As I'm sure you are aware, the RDA elements, roles and selected
vocabularies are available on the NSDL Registry
(http://metadataregistry.org), and they can be used by anyone. I'm
happy to answer any questions about what's there, decisions that have
been made about registration, what's missing, etc. Most of the work of
registration and the wiki scenarios has been done with the help of Karen
Coyle. Both of us are happy to be available to the testing group at any
point.

Regards,
Diane Hillmann
co-chair, DCMI/RDA Task Group

eXtensible Catalog Project metadata paper available

Apologies for duplication...

The eXtensible Catalog (XC) Project at the University of Rochester
announces the release of a major white paper describing the project's
approach to metadata. The paper describes how the development of an XML
schema for XC and the creation of a platform for enriching and
transforming metadata (the XC Metadata Services Toolkit) benefit not
only future users of the XC software, but also the broader library
community.

"Supporting the eXtensible Catalog through Metadata Design and Services"
by Jennifer Bowen (Co-Principal Investigator, XC Project) is now
available at the project's website at
http://www.extensiblecatalog.org/MetadataReports

The XC Schema is designed to enable the reuse of MARC catalog data
alongside metadata from other metadata schemas within a variety of web
environments. The schema's FRBRized structure and inclusion of some RDA
elements will provide libraries with an opportunity to work with
metadata records that bear a strong resemblance to records that will
eventually be created using RDA.

The XC Metadata Services Toolkit can be used to enrich, transform,
manage and provide basic authority control for batches of metadata
records in any XML schema, including MARCXML. It can provide a useful
platform for testing new metadata standards and schemas and an
invaluable learning environment for libraries as they become accustomed
to new metadata standards such as RDA.

The eXtensible Catalog (XC) is a collaborative project funded by the

ALA Midwinter 2009 Program Announcement: ALCTS Continuing Resources Section College & Research Libraries IG

*This message is cross-posted.*

Hello, all. You are cordially invited to attend the following ALA midwinter program sponsored by the ALA
ALCTS Continuing Resources Section College and Research Libraries Interest Group.

E-Journals All Around: in the Catalog, the Knowledgebase, and the Web

Time: Saturday Jan. 24th, 10:30am-12:00pm
Location: Sheraton Hotel, Gold
Program:

1. Peter McCracken (Co-founder & Director of Research, Serials Solutions): A KBART Update - Improving
Patrons' Access to Electronic Resources.
The presentation will address the current status of the Knowledge Bases And Related Tools (KBART)
project, with particular attention to how it will benefit publishers, librarians, and ultimately (and
most importantly), library users. We will discuss what KBART has done in the past year, what effect we
believe the initiative will have in the e-resources supply chain, what will be coming next, and what
challenges remain.

2. Beth R. Bernhardt (Electronic Resources Librarian, University of North Carolina Greensboro):
Dealing with Free E-Journals: Are they worth the effort?
The number of "free" electronic journals available on the internet continues to increase. This
presentation will focus on answering questions such as how can we find these journals, should we make an
effort to provide access for our patrons, and what is the potential cost for maintaining them?

3. Nicole E. Engard (Open Source Evangelist, LibLime): Serials Management in KOHA's open source library
software.
The presentation will help you understand what open source is all about and show you how the Koha Open Source
Automation system can not only handle your serials in the library catalog, but provide better services to
our patrons.
