Re: Locative Games: Police use GPS coordinates as Evidence

It's in fact far worse. The things, they've started (long time ago) to
converge. Capitalism, in its now hegemonic neo-liberal declination, has
made politicians basically redundant, since there is nothing important to
decide about anymore (One-Idea-System, anyone?). Coupled with the
definitely anglo-saxon sado-masochism, especially directed at the
individual (= unredeamable sinner, that's the presby/calvinist streak dear
to Max Weber) this reli/pop culture, which also gave us the most brutish
form of capitalism (never mind the Chinese), this leads to the relentless
pursuit of all-round punishment for the slightest offense (zero tolerance,
another fine anglo-saxon contribution to the world civilisation),
preferably even before the crime (everything basically is) has been
committed. Next stage: total fiscalisation! The problem with criminal law
is evidence. Just do away with it! Proof is no longer of guilt, but of
innocence - with is impossible, since the devices (they're above humans)
are _always_ right. Hitting the individual economically, with the ultimate
goal of bankrupting her, is the shortest road to generalised fear and
total control, the antechamber of ... well you guess to where I'm pointing
at.

Enjoy the day while it lasts!
Oh yeah, it's actually too late to say 'Enough!'. The damage has been done
already. The North west Passage is open, and ripe for business!

Re: Locative Games: Police use GPS coordinates as Evidence

I agree - yes, this has been going on a while. In fact, there are
various reasonably confirmed rumors of what the U.S. and Israel have
been doing - using cell phones as homing devices for missile strikes
etc as well to assassinate Palestinian resistance leaders, Hamas and
Hizbalallah operatives etc etc

Anyway - there's lots and lots going on with GPS, cell phone art, and
mobile art projects.

Some of the more creative stuff is around - of course - play. Two of
my favorites are

The Yellow Arrow Project by Brian House and crew with their concept of
"Massively Authored Artistic Publication" - 6864 arrows, placed in 467
cities in 38 countries

http://yellowarrow.net/index2.php

Yellow Arrow is a global public art project that subverts the
hierarchy of media power by creating an open forum for communication.
The project invites the questions "When does an object become art?
What makes a landmark? Who says what counts?" By collecting and
sharing places of personal significance, this public collaboration
creates a subjective atlas called dynamic MAAP (Massively Authored
Artistic Project) that expresses the unique characteristics, personal
histories, and hidden secrets that live within our everyday spaces.

Participants place uniquely-coded Yellow Arrow stickers to draw
attention to different locations and objects — a favorite view of the

Naeem Mohaiemen: VOGUE INDIA: Starving for a $10, 000 handbag

(Bwo the Sarai Reader List)

Years ago the Delhi Sarai Initiative produced an ironic postcard
depicting a somewhat depressed-looking peasant holding a flacon of
dishwasher liquid 'JOY' in his hand. As usual with neo-capitalism,
reality has now overtaken fiction. But then fashionistas were already
accustomed in their favourite magazines to (lily-white) models
parading in exotic places among authentically - if suspiciously
immaculate - clad (very dark-skinned) locals. -PR

http://www.sajaforum.org/2008/09/vogue-india-fas.html

A fashion spread in the latest Vogue India, in which poor, nameless
Indians sport $10,000 handbags and $100 bibs, has catalyzed a profound
reaction in the press and blogosphere. What is the acceptability, many
are asking, of employing such jarring images, un-ironically, for the
sake of commerce?

>From UK's Telegraph:

"The poor are always used as props, not as real people, which is
why they haven't even been named in the magazine," said columnist
Parsa Venkateshwar Rao. "Would they use homeless or hard up people in
London for this kind of shoot?" <<<

In The New York Times article which first brought widespread attention
to the matter, Indian journalist Kanika Gahlaut is quoted:

There's nothing "fun or funny" about putting a poor person in a

hello,

i would not define the polices hunting of people as 'terrorism mania'
since this is an pathological analysis which claims that the illness
comes from somewhere inside a subject. but if ones takes this analysis
the sick subject would be the state, and every state is sick actually.
instead of this i'd propose to call the surveillance 'mania' esp. in
germany the *fear of the state as the agent of the capital*. this fear
is the fear of real revolts of lower classes. the german profitrate is
going down down down and they shiver with fear.
clearly the surveillance 'mania' is no mania but a (THE) reaction and is
part of the greater proceedings: the militarization of the country. one

Tear Gas, the National Guard and [Fwd: [pga na] RNC--In the Streets on Monday]

The media in the US has really reached a new low in my eyes. I am
really, somehow surprised by this and ready to get the hell out of
here asap. It is scary. Yesterday, the first day of the RNC was
effectively shut down by massive roving blockades and direct action.
Tear gas and the national guard were all that was able to move these
amazing, brave, beautiful people protesting the war on iraq, the war
on immigrants and global capitalism as we know it. As the photos in
this photo essay clearly show. Yet I never heard a word on the media
about this hugely significant event. And today, with over 150 people
arrested, the media is again conveniently focusing on the RNC, and
still not mentioning a word about the virtual war that Saint Paul
erupted into yesterday. Amazing...

See the complete photo essay here:

More media and photos here:

and below is a story from starhawk about the first day of the rnc,
which most of this country will never ever know about...

Introducing the Toaster

Software vending machine at Technopark

Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: And you thought only colas and crispies can be had from a vending machine? How about
one that has on its ‘menu’ such things as ‘Ubuntu’ and ‘Fedora’? Well, that is just the kind of
gizmo that you may spot if you drop by the Park Centre at Technopark these days.

Named Freedom Toaster, this machine promises to set you ‘free’ from proprietary software and
paraphernalia such as licences. All you have to do at the Toaster is to insert a CD in a slot and press the
right buttons. The Toaster will then ‘burn’ your choice on to the CD free.

The Toaster, a dispenser of free software, is the brainchild of the Linux Users Group in
Thiruvananthapuram and a private firm, Zyxware Technologies.

Anoop John, chief executive officer of the company, says the idea is to spread the concept of free software
among the techies of Tehnopark.

“We want people to understand that there is an alternative to licences and proprietary software. We want
people to have the freedom to share, to copy and to modify. We are now talking to companies in the Technopark
to sponsor the Toaster at various locations inside the park,” Mr. John says.

He points out that normally, free software is spread through broadband Internet. In a country such as
India, the scope of this is still limited. This is where a software dispenser such as the Toaster assumes
