Meeting the 7th. Plus some things to talk about, perhaps.

[xpost to OurCultureOurCapitol--that list, please scroll down to UPDATE]

I'm up for meeting in two days, especially if we can meet at State or
at the Living Room, or at the Egyptian Tea House.

At State we could meet in the lobby for Montezuma Hall.
This is right near the trolley station.
http://as.sdsu.edu/aztec/mh.html

Montezuma hall is on red on that map and there are couches and good
places to sit in the lobby.

If for some reason we cannot meet in the lobby we could meet in the
Starbucks or in the Food Court (Monty's) both of which can also be
seen on that map.

It is a good location for those taking the bus or the trolley. For
those driving--I imagine you'd have to pay for parking, though finding
a spot is probably not as hard in the evening.

(Loxie might have a better idea)

The bus ride to Kensington is really short from State, so if Brad
wants to suggest a meeting place there I could make that pretty
easily.

The car drivers could also park at a trolley station near State and
take the trolley the rest of the way.

If you're up for meeting at state, let's give that a try. If not, lets

Re: saving humanity / helping it have more fun

(Crosspost: This story might be useful to others besides the carfree movement)

I have an uncle in geosciences who believes in the carfree vision. He
told me about a former classmate of his who set out years ago to teach
in a grassroots way how people in non-industrialized countries could
build schools that would not fall down in earthquakes. After being
successful getting many schools built he reevaluated his efforts and
decided he would be more effective by targeting heads of state/public
policy/building regulations.

My uncle was impressed that he went from a sort of peace-corps
approach and demeanor to organizing conferences that presidents and
prime ministers were attending.

Now, my uncle says, Brian Tucker has been so successful at getting
attention put on building earthquake-safe structures he's stepped back
and asked if he's really focusing attention in the most effective way.

Apparently he's asking, of all the problems policy makers should be
targeting, what is most important? Could he actually be doing harm by
taking attention away from famine-reduction for example.

And he may be organizing conferences or starting a new organization
around that kind of questioning and strategic planning.

Here's his organization:

He sounds entirely focused on geohazards here.

no-fee seminar on global change

OCOC members,
You might like to know about the following: (Basically it is a web
seminar for which you need to gather together 3-4 other local
participants)

Here are the seminar URL and excerpts from the description:

http://www.global-change-seminar.org/

"It's Your Move" is an Internet seminar (a workshop) for small groups.

The goal of the Seminar is:

(1) To widen the perspective of participants about global problems and
the human role in them,

(2) And to empower and motivate them to exert a more intentionally
positive influence on those communities, global and local, of which
they are a part.

Who Is Putting On This Seminar?

Our names are Bill Dillon and Pat Watt. You can learn more about us at
our "Trouser Rollers" website. Prior to retirement, Bill made his
living as an organizational development consultant and designed and
facilitated any number of 2-5 day workshops for a wide variety of
groups (public and private corporations, and governmental entities) to
help them solve various problems. He also did a fair amount of
executive coaching. Pat (who is the webmaster for this project)
trained as a scientist, had a 15-year career as a community leader,

ultraculture

A new manifestation, reminiscent of the beginning of the beat
movement, and the avant-garde/la vanguardia including futurism & other
isms.

A strength is the use of magic as metaphor, for things
involving wonder.

Very much following from motivation similar to what led to this
group--but he/they may have a lot more energy/ or be closer to the
source.

I find the habermasian approach (see below) more comfortable, but I'm
happy, excited, energized to see this. And I think that is the point,
or the magic.

I hope you're well!
Colin

Philosopher Jürgen Habermas calls "action oriented to mutual
understanding" *communicative action* (Braaten 57). He identifies "in
communicative competence, a historical
force—the impetus behind increasing cultural complexity and toward
ever more liberated forms of social interaction and integration"
(Braaten 76). Communicative action is central "to achiev[ing]
emancipation and thereby the good life by founding society on rational
principles rather than tradition" (Braaten 73). For Habermas,

Revolutionary nomadic tribe

I'm starting a nomadic tribe, intended to both demonstrate alternatives
to mainstream society and promote the widespread sharing of information
on tribalism, biocentric ideas, and the threat of society. I'm looking
for good people interested in a somewhat minimalist tribe to travel
nationaly or globaly, supporting each other through non-mainstream
paths like art and music, and working to spread some of the messages
that a modern destructive society needs so desperately to hear. I'd
like to create a truly tribal experience, and I think that there's a
lot of fun to be had and good things to be accomplished. Knowledge of
tribalism, life sciences, and social problems a plus, but not
neccesary, there's plenty for all of us to learn. No hard drugs,
alchoholism, sexism, racism, or negative lifestyles/behaviors please.

Like to explore a new path together? I'd love to hear from you.

James

Seeking ecovillage partners!

(Please accept my apology in advance if this message is inappropriate
for this group.)

A group I'm involved with is building an ecovillage on an island in
southwest British Columbia, Canada. Over the past year, we have
established a non-profit Society, created formal finance, ownership,
and governance policies, produced fundraising events, involved local
land use planning agencies, and performed a great deal of research and
brainstorming.

Now we have identified a wonderful southwest sloping parcel that should
support between ten to thirty families. The 30 hectare site has a mix
of rich valley bottom cleared farmland, recent clearcut, young
re-growth, and a few older trees, and rises about 100 meters. Two
immediate neighbors are organic farmers. There is a year-round creek
crossing two corners of the site, with seven acre-feet of water rights
and microhydro potential, with a head of about 40 meters. The immediate
neighbors, local populace and regulatory bodies are in touch and are
generally supportive of our efforts.

Our members have strengths in permaculture, alternative energy, healing
arts, arts and crafts, engineering, finance, grant writing, and
organizing.

At this point, we need a few more individuals who want to take part AND
can can make a significant financial contribution, on the order of
about half the value of the average North American suburban home. Our
goal is to be entirely self-financed by people who will have a long
term commitment to the village. Being an initial financier will entitle

Industrial Society Destroys Mind and Environment

Dear Group Members,

I am sending you an Article to read. This is about the link between
Mind and Social / Environmental-Issues. Can you (and your colleagues)
help me in circulating this message among the right people?

Thank you,
Sushil Yadav

[ My background is given in the first letter ( letter No. 1 ) under
the
topic " Correspondence with neuroscientists " on the website :
www.netshooter.com/emotion ]

MAIN ARTICLE & EXPERIMENT

Please note : The article has been written in short sentences rather
than paragraph-form because it is about subjective experience /
emotion/ reduction of thought.

Industrial Society Destroys Mind and Environment.

Subject : In a fast society slow emotions become extinct.
Subject : A thinking mind cannot feel.
Subject : Scientific/ Industrial/ Financial thinking destroys the
planet.
Subject : Environment can never be saved as long as cities exist.

Emotion is what we experience during gaps in our thinking.

Tsunami Relief Bracelet - one woman's effort to help:

Tsunami Relief Bracelet - one woman's effort to help:

I am sending this to everyone on my email listings. This is an effort
to help which my daughter Carolyn has thought of and done all on her
own. She hopes to make it available far and wide, so if you like what
you see, please pass it on. We have several relief groups which have
already been working in the areas hit hardest, so we will be donating
to them. As soon as we have final confirmation from the agencies
contacted, we will post their link(s) directly on the website. ALL
profits will go directly to the agency or agencies - no one involved
with this effort will be getting paid.

Thanks for considering helping in this way,

Nova Green

CAFTA the Trojan Calf

**Please forward**

Dear friends,

Never thought international trade laws would make you laugh? Check this out:
http://www.quixote.org/calf

It's a biting, two-minute movie called "CAFTA -- The Trojan Calf." Its
message -- that the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) has been
presented to Central America as a gift, but like the Trojan Horse, it's
really a vehicle for American corporations to secretly invade new markets.
It's an important story that will keep you smiling, and hopefully inspire
you to action. (Make sure you watch for the kicker at the end!)

After watching the movie you can join with thousands of others in
rejecting CAFTA by signing a full-page ad to appear in the NY Times the
first of June. Congress may vote on the agreement as early as July.

We hope you like the movie, and we encourage you to pass it along to your
family and friends.

Vision Research Project; whither the cathedral

First here's a relevant site:(Positive Futures
network)
http://yesmagazine.org/11powerofone/loveoflife.htm
"We are working toward a society centered on the love
of life."
The links at the bottom of
http://carfreeuniverse.org/Members/colin/kenWilber are
also worth looking at.

...

I'm announcing something I've been calling the Vision
Research Project (VRP).

http://carfreeuniverse.org/Members/colin/vision000/

The VRP is at present about learning how to express
visions in ways that inspire others to help you
realize those visions. Later on I may start looking at
visions throughout history and their effects.

It will take some time to read all the documents
listed there, so save it for then!

The rest of this email is a ramble--perhaps disregard
it. I feel there is some value in it so I haven't cut
it though.

Colin :)
