[Ebbc-Talk] Oakland Mayor Jean Quan's Inauguration/valet bike parking

EBBC:

If you are not working Monday morning (Jan 3), come on down to help
park bikes for Jean Quan's Inauguration Ceremony at the Fox Theatre.
The day's celebrations are the start of some great changes for the
City of Oakland that I am really excited about. And what better way to
kick things off than see a bunch of cyclists downtown enjoying the
festivities.

We are parking bikes at the corner of 19th St and Telegraph Ave. This
is the corner to a large, fenced-off lot that will be opened up for us
to park the bikes. Just come ready to welcome cyclists and take care
of their bikes. Here are the shifts:

10:30am-11:30am
11:30am-12:30pm
12:30pm-1:30pm

If you are participating in the Remembering & Making History Walk that
starts at 8:30am prior to the Inauguration, go right ahead and then
come on over to the bike parking corral to help out. Here is a link to
information about the Walk, which I am sorry I will miss.

Hope to see you and a bunch of cyclists in downtown Oakland tomorrow.

[Ebbc-Talk] El Cerito's Compulsory Bike Helmet Law

A Strange source, but apparently a loop-hole that may have made El Cerito's
ordinance enforcable has been closed.

*"Banning a growing practice by local jurisdictions that choose to ignore
the state laws governing traffic violations, known as the Vehicle Code, and
instead cite drivers for traffic violations under vague local ordinances
with varying penalties."*

CVC 21 has long banned local jurisdictions from ignoring state laws
governing traffic violations. Apparently the changes were intended to
strengthen the law.

It is interesting that a single parks district is exempted in this law.
Other districts are covered by CVC 21113.

[Ebbc-Talk] Long Beach bicyclists register their displeasure with city ordinance | latimes.com | 1/4/2011

http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-long-beach-
cycling-20110104,0,5693639.story

Anna Seng had no idea it was against the law to ride an unregistered
bike in Long Beach, a place that has pledged to be "the most bicycle-
friendly city in America."

But she found out earlier this year when her teenage son borrowed a
cousin's bike and came home with a big surprise: a ticket for not
having a bell — or registration.

"I didn't even know that existed until I got the ticket," Seng said.
"People that I talk to — none of them tell me they have registration."

Now she and her son are preparing for a court date to challenge the
fines, which total more than $400.

I forwarded this to Alan Wachtel, who is the Legislative Liaison for the
California Association of Bicycling Organizations (CABO), and this is
what he had to say:

What about the variety of "court costs" added to fines? These court processing costs can be in the hundreds
of dollars.

Re: [Ebbc-Talk] bike noob

If you are getting repeated flats it most likely means there is probably an
issue with the wheel or the tire. If you take the tire and tube off the wheel
you should be able to run your fingers around the inside of the rim to check
(carefully) for any abrasions or deformities, or even a spoke poking through.
Then check (again, carefully, as there may be sharp things) for anything
poking through the tire, or for any holes that might have been worn through
the sidewalls of the tire, possibly from a mis-aligned brake pad rubbing on
it. Alternately if you take it in to a bike shop they should be able to
figure out the problem in about five minutes, and maybe even fix it for free.
There is no reason why you should be getting so many flats, especially with
knobby mountain bike tires, so there must be something unusual going on.

Re: [Ebbc-Talk] bike noob

I recommend the free bike safety classes that EBBC offers.
They should teach you about flats and how to avoid them,
as well as how to drive a bike on the road.

Re: [Ebbc-Talk] bike noob

You could also verify whether the brand/model of tire itself contains a kevlar layer, and if not, add in one -
I forget their branding, but essentially it's something you can put in that protects the inner tube from
things that puncture the tire. This will help, in the case where you actually are running over numerous
nails, shards of broken glass, etc., vs. the aforementioned issues w/ rim, spokes, etc.

Also check that if something did puncture the tire, that you actually find & remove it, before patching the
innertube or putting a new one in. Even non-newbs occasionally forget to do this (doh! mea culpa).
