[Ebbc-Talk] Help- where to start? Learning to build a hybrid

Hi- I have always had hard rocks or rock hoppers since they were new 20 years
ago and I like them so much I ride them on the street in slicks. Its about
time that I learned the inner workings of these things! Just got an old '92
or '93 hard rock and am looking to hybridize it. Road rims, slicks, drop
handle bars with brake levers and a stem push the bars out and up. Where
should I go to learn? Where are there workshops around the East Bay? Thanks,
James

[Ebbc-Talk] Muni bus did not stop after running over bicycle

Bicyclist had only minor injury. Bicyclist had already fallen over when
Muni ran over bicycle. Nevertheless, the bus should have stopped.

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2010/03/03/MN9T1CA8EQ.DTL&tsp=1

I know that this is not East Bay, but many of us occasionally visit San
Francisco.

Re: [Ebbc-Talk] Muni bus did not stop after running over bicycle

>From the article, it's not clear the bicyclist had already fallen over when
the incident with the bus occurred. It's also not clear that the bicyclist's
injuries were only minor.

That "already fallen" observation appears to come from two people, both of
whom aren't really independent non-vested parties:

**The bus driver who could be in a heap of trouble:
> The 5-Fulton driver did pull over briefly past the crash and told passengers
> that the bicyclist had fallen by herself, Chanzey said.
[I think Chanzey was a passenger on the bus --jim]

**A Muni spokesperson who apparently was neither on the bus nor at the
scene:
> Judson True, a spokesman for the Municipal Transportation Agency, said initial
> reports were that the cyclist fell and "the bus then ran over the front wheel
> of the bicycle." There was no indication that the bus hit the cyclist, he
> said.

Perhaps those "initial reports" came from the bus driver. That's not clear.
Could just be some CYA action by MUNI.

Earlier, the SF Gate story says:
>passengers yelled from the back of the bus that the
>vehicle had struck a bicyclist.

It's also unclear if the bicyclist's injuries were minor, or moderate, or
something else:

> The bicyclist was conscious and appeared to have a scrape on her head as she

Re: [Ebbc-Talk] Muni bus did not stop after running over bicycle

Jim,

I'm glad that put your editor hat on.

In other (East Bay) transit news, the Capitol Corridor train hit an AC
Transit bus which was stalled on the train tracks. No injuries. No
passengers. Near the Coliseum. The driver leaped off the bus in time to
be safe. Apparently after talking to dispatch about how to start the
bus, but before calling someone who could stop the train.

The next train would have been my train (with my bicycle). Hence the
loose EBBC connection. It looks like the driver, and dispatch screwed
up badly, if you can trust news reports.

[Ebbc-Talk] Transportation news from DC

There has never been more reason for EBBC to join in the National Bike
Summit in Washington DC (March 9-11). Discussions on the long-term
Transportation Bill are getting serious and they hold promise for plenty of
local projects here in the East Bay. A contingent of eight East Bay
bicycling representatives will walk the hallways of congress next week. You
can get a glimpse some late-breaking news and what issues we will be working
on at
http://www.ebbc.org/?q=node/3533.

For an overview of EBBC's strictly bicycle-related actions on State and
Federal legislation, please visit "Campaigns" at www.ebbc.org and click on
2009-2010 Legislative Session Campaigns.

Re: [Ebbc-Talk] ATC Service Changes

I'm looking foward to new service up to Chabot Planetarium [1] and Skyline HS
[2] . It only doesn't run weekends, but it's better than nothing. For the
first time I'll be able to take my bike up to Skyline by bus.
