Re: Looking for plans for a mini alcohol stove

I think this video is one I really want to follow up on and make. The dude did a nice job on explaining it and showing what was done. WARNING: It's 21 minutes long! Very well put together for tenderfoots like myself. :-)

But sadly I've run out of time to make one, so I'm just going with a Esbit stove till I get home.

Thanks to all that responded, I learned alot in responds and research. The alkey stoves has really blossomed out nicely too.

Ultralight backpack for Mount Whitney

I have been conditioning for Mount Whitney with my beloved GoLite Breeze. However, it is just too much strain on my shoulders and I have a history of low back problems. Is there a recommended alternative that has some suspension to transfer more weight to my hips, yet not too heavy with construction using excessively sturdy fabrics? What is the "next generation" after the Breeze that provides more comfort with a bit of compromise on ultimate ultralight?

I'm having good luck with a Gossamer Gear Mariposa Plus. It's very comfortable up to 25 pounds total pack weight (with food and water), and reasonable up to 30 pounds. Don't try anything above that, neither the construction nor the shoulder strap and suspension are up to it.

Note that this does *not* have shoulder suspension straps, so does put some strain on your shoulders. It *does* have an aluminum stay to transfer some of the load to your hips though.

Re: Ultralight backpack for Mount Whitney

I have a lot of success using the REI flash 65 or 50. They have an excellent weight transfering system of using a plastic formed sheet to help move the weight to your hips. The hip belt and shoulder straps have excellent padding. The pack carries 35# without a problem.

Lunch ideas...

I was wondering if the group could give me some ideas for lunch on the trail. We'll be hiking the Rae Lakes Loop in a few weeks and each of us needs to be responsible for our own mid-day meals for 5 days. Trail mix is fine but not for 5 consecutive days ! :-) Thanks for any and all suggestions.

Hi John, I'm a vegan so take that into consideration but I like things I can just add some cold water to and let rehydrate before eating. Hummus, bean mixtures, things like that. If you can spare the weight, a bagel on the first day is nice.

Will you have any means of heating up a meal, or are you with an outfitter that requires you to eat a "cold" lunch of ready-to-eat food items?

1) Pouch tuna, cheese, and tortilla. Make tuna wraps. Dry Monterrey Jack carries well.
2) Dry salami and tortilla (or other durable bread of your choice, such as pita bread).
3) Cheese and crackers, pack the crackers in a small Tupperware container in your daypack to keep them getting crunched. Or switch to another durable bread of choice such as tortilla or pita bread.
4) Canned kippered herring and crackers. This is a bit heavier than the other options and should only be done if you are with an outfitter using pack horses to haul your gear and trash but when you've been sweating, salty herring and crackers somehow tastes very good.

For your lunch beverage, you can get small pouches of Gatorade G2 that will flavor up a water bottle quite nicely with all sorts of nice minerals and such that your body will be craving after a sweaty morning hiking.

For more ideas, take a look at your grocery store for ready-to-eat stuff in pouches. For example, I know you can get chicken meat too in the foil pouches, combine with cheese in a pita pouch and you're not bad off. I think you can even get *Spam* in the foil pouches now, if you're that depraved! Be sure to carry some mustard and pita bread if that's your thing, otherwise you will detest Spam even more than usual.

If you have the ability to heat things up for lunch (i.e., a small stove and fuel and a small pot for it), you can get way more creative. For one thing, with heat, you can use dried foods that will weigh less than the ready-to-eat foods that I mention above. But I think we need more information about your trip to give you advice there.
