Equinox ARAS Backpack

Looking for more info. on this pack but could not find any reviews.
Has anyone used one of these that would be willing to give me a short,
sweet, account of your experience.

I know the Katadin has had high reviews but the ARAS has more of the
features I want. Just not sure it's right for me.

thanks

Re: Wash Dirty Clothes

No pn mentioned using a bear canister as a washtub. I have not tried it
but a buddy suggested it. Fill the canister with cold mountain water,
put the black lid on and put it in the sun to warm up. After a sponge
bath, and hair wash. Use the remaining warm water to clean clothes.
Seems acceptably sanitary if you rinse it thoroughly.

I suppose you may need to secure your food from the bears in some other
manner while doing this.

Another way to do this is one of the extra tough leaf bags. They are dark
colored to absorb sunlight. Find an appropriate sized depression and fill
the leaf bag with an appropriate amount of water.

If you are in a base camp situation you can also melt snow this was. It
works even better if it is setting on an insulating pad.

Re: Going Camping In The Grand Canon

Hi Matthew,

Are you just going to the GC for camping, as in on the rim, and then
day hiking around or are you actually going to backpack into the
canyon for 2 or more days?

Gear choices and prep will be different depending on your answer.

Remember, it needs to be sunny for this to work. It works particularly well
in spring when the days tend to be warmer and sunnier.

Re: Going Camping In The Grand Canon

Hi Matt,

You have already received some very good advice so I wont bore you
with more of the same. My only extra thought is for you to find out
as much about the trip as possible, as early as possible so you can
prepare.

Many people hike INTO the GC thinking they are fine but the return
trip OUT is the really butt kicker.

Additionally, AZ weather is notoriously tricky and the GC is no
exception. I went in April one year. There was snow on the rim and
the over night temp at the campground was just below freezing. By the
time we were half way down I was wearing shorts and a t-shirt, wishing
I had a sun hat. A temp change from top to bottom of 30 to 40 degrees
would not be weird.

Re: Re: Wash Dirty Clothes

You know that fickle weather in the fall in the West. Snow one night and up
to 60 or better the next afternoon. Unless your planning on melting snow in
a garbage bag then it stays 30 ;-)
