Re: Bear Vault BV400 Failed!

Sorry, to hear about your experience, did you have the
new BV lid( RED Labeled) Its the latest version of the
BV350 /400 lids. The old ones were easy to open, we
had 5-6 different cases of bears opening them in 2005
in SEKI.

Re: Giardia Infection

I would go with garlic. Garlic kills many types of pathogens. Do a
search. Make toast, butter it and chop a few cloves of garlic and
put it on. Put it in almost any food. make a pesto with lots of
garlic.

Re: Bear Vault BV400 Failed!

There has been a big discussion about this since I started a thread in
an Adirondack Forum. I bear started to work on our BV400. It appears
there are one or two bears in the Marcy dam area of the High peaks that
has figured out how to get into these kegs. Bear Vault has prototypes
on in circulation with the rangers in the area now. Upon successful
testing they will be releasing the new lids in the spring.

The thread can be found here:

Re: Dallas Texas tripo ideas?

Mt Scott/Wichita Wildlife Area just north of Lawton. Not sure how far it is
but I have had lots of fun having the boys hike this area.

Tallihina Oklahoma has the Ouchita Trailhead, so that might be another idea,
and since you can hike down to the trail from several places on the scenic
drive they can do the scenic drive and you hike back to the trailhead.

Down in Texas they are foreigners that must be avoided. Of course, I come
home from scouting and find that CU beat the Sooners so maybe Texas has a
chance this year.

Re: Dallas Texas tripo ideas?

Hi Gordon,
The Wichita Mountains and Ouachita Mountains, both in Oklahoma, are
great, but are 3 to 4 hours away. There is a short, 2-3 mile, easy
trail in Mineral Wells State park about 1.5 hours west of Carrollton.
The primitive camping area is a short hike, but it does get you out of
the city. This trail is on the west side of the lake and there is a
rocky area on the east side of the lake where you can do some climbing
and rapelling. This area is called Penitentiary Hollow. This area is
also kinda fun just to walk around and explore. Best of luck on your
trip.

I'd say that depends on what you mean by light-weight footwear. I
routinely do winter snowshoe backpacks in light-weight hiking boots,
but they are boots, not trail running shoes. I use tall gaiters to
keep snow out of the top of the boots. I find the boots plenty warm
during the day while hiking/snowshoeing, then in camp I switch the
boots for a fleece bootie with a nylon overboot (for the life of me I
can't remember who makes these, but they are toasty warm around camp).

Re: I've added you as a friend on Facebook...

It's an easy mistake. Those sites mine your Yahoo, Hotmail and AOL accounts for addresses, and then give you a big button that says, "Add Your Friends." Most people don't realize how many different types of address they have saved in their contacts i.e. mailing lists, professional contacts, etc.

I'm with Don. If you're willing to share, I'd love to know what type of water purification system you use and where you believe you picked up the bug.
