How about this for a suggestion? Why don't you contact them directly
David and offer your services for free? Might be a good way to give
back to the community .... and sure beats just bagging them here :-)

Did, actually, several months ago. The Marketing Lady who evidently
presided over the whole thing was incensed that anyone would spend
time to critique (actually, I just pointed out a few of the spelling
problems in a very nice way) the site. Apparently very sensitive about
it. Sometimes it's very difficult to give back to the community <G>.
But thank you for your suggestion.

Re: Re: Introduction and Question about Youth Pack

We picked up a Jansport Scout for my 7 year old at the end of fall. We haven't had it out on a trail yet, but it is
very adjustable to accommodate growing children. It is an external frame pack, so not the cool new
internal frame look, but it is very light and should serve her needs.

  Welcome Jonathan,

Santa brought my 11 year old a Gregory Arcadia this year. We had
fitted him to the pack previously in our local outdoors store. He
measured out at a 15" torso and we barely got the medium frame down
to fit him right with about #20 in the pack. This is what I was
shooting for as we do several trips a year and the room to grow is
important. I also noted that his comfortable load is growing almost
as fast as he is, so keeping him in a good pack, while expensive, is
  very important.

Now if I could just find as good a solution for climbing shoes...

  Have a great trip!

  Don

RE: Jansport Scout Youth Pack

I have 3 sons - 17, 15 and 10. I bought the older 2 the Jansport Scout when
they joined Boy Scouts, at age 11. They still use them on the occassional
backpacking trip I can talk them into going with me, and the 10 yr old now
uses one of them (can't talk the older one into these trips anymore!). The
pack has all the advantages of a relatively well designed external frame:
adjustable, 4 different compartments, easy access to pack contents (not a
bad thing for a 10 yr old!), a section under the bottom compartment which
easily adds a sleeping bag or shelter, cool in hot weather, bombproof....

The only disadvantage is the weight. 3 lbs, 4 ozs for the current model is
pretty heavy - but it's a great value - campmor has them for $50 right now.
If you watch the rest of what they carry, you can manage that. The pack
easily carries the 15 - 20 lb loads I let my sons carry..... the 15 yo has
even figured out that he can put a 27" wide ccf pad on top (he uses it in
his HH hammock). I don't remember whether the pack comes with a sternum
strap, but it's something you'll have to add for small kids if it doesn't -
their shoulders just aren't broad enough to hold up the shoulder straps
without the sternum strap.

I posted a couple of pics of two of my sons and I over at whiteblaze last
month. They were both wearing Scouts:

Happy New Year!

Re: tarptent suggestions needed (I DON'T CARRY POLES)

Just to clarify, all Tarptent models work with our supplied poles and don't
need trekking poles. Even the new Rainbow works very well without trekking
poles, it just needs to be staked at the four corners. Because so many
people have trekking poles these days, we made the decision to remove the
front pole from the Virga 2/Squall 2/Rainshadow 2 and make it a $5 option.
We also lowered the price $5 to match. It just seemed silly and wasteful to
ship a shelter with a pole that ended up getting thrown away.

Great to hear that you did. Bummer they did not take it up. So often
in life you can only but ask and offer to help. If folks don't like
the approach not much one can do about it.

New member

Just joined after searching info on alcohol stoves. We came off the
AT yesterday and are ready to shed the MSR whisperlight and
accoutrements. Enjoy access to such a wide forum on lightweight
camping. First sought same in 1960's as a Boy Scout. Continued
sporadic backpacking over the many years and in past five have
increased number of outings, completing five small sections of AT in
North Carolina and Virginia. Eagle Scout still actively working with
local large Scout Troop. Difficult managing competing time priorities
with Scouting, Airstreaming, and backpacking with wife. Love all
three activities but they take away from golfing time, too. So little
time -- need to find retirement soon!

Take a look at these three:

Go-Torch - 1.9 oz w/burner, pot stand and wind screen:
http://www.gossamergear.com/cgi-bin/gossamergear/Go-Torch.html
( http://tinyurl.com/ckgjx )

ThermoJet MicroLite Stove - 2-1/2 oz with the same

or Brasslite, slighty heaver (1.5 - 2.5 oz w/ burner and support[no
wind screen]), but really nicely constructed:
